Japonism

Japonism is, in short, the influence that Japanese art has had in European works. Most specifically in that of the 19th century. It’s also known as Japonisme and Anglo-Japanese.

Are you a fan - like so many others - of artists such as Van Gogh? Without the woodblock Ukiyo-e prints of the Edo Period, his style would differ from what we know and love now. This traditional Japanese art form had an enormous impact on Western art. It was part of the foundation that created movements such as Impressionism, Post-Impressionism (of course), and Art Nouveau. For the history of Ukiyo-e prints, I have a post here.

As Japan’s artworks became more available to all, thanks to international trade, it spread across the world. Japanese arts were collected and featured in English exhibitions, and shown to all at places like The World’s Fair. The craze in France started when these blocks were introduced and sold out quickly. They were beautiful, and cheap to make. The influence of Asian art continued to spread in all artistic endeavours. People loved how different Japanese characteristics of art were from what they had been taught. Van Gogh is not the only recognizable person to be influenced by Asian art. Claude Monet (1840-1926), Paul Gauguin (1848-1903), and Louis Anquetin (1861-1924) are just a few more that adopted certain Japanese styles in their work.

What attracted artists to these Japanese works is the vivid, bold, and unshaded shapes and colours. Without this influence, it makes you wonder what the works of Edgar Degas (1834-1917) and Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) would have looked like. The similarities may not be obvious at first glance, but it is the composition, colours, and lines you must focus on to truly understand the influence. Some works may be obvious - beautiful women dressed in kimonos - while others more subtle. In any case, it’s amazing to see how the influence of another culture can help form entire movements across the world.

“You might give her a complex, and then she’ll grow up to wear an uncomfortable-looking leotard and mismatched bright green stiletto boots and scream ‘Here’s your first-class ticket to hell!’ while pummeling people senseless! Is that what you want, Guillo?!”

LOOK, I MADE A WRITING CHALLENGE!

I’ve kind of wanted to do this for a while and I apparently really wanted to procrastinate today so…it’s up!

What is it? It’s a fic writing challenge for the BTS fandom using songs by other Korean artists as inspirations

Time Frame? Sign-ups are open until June. Assignments will be given as soon as you sign up. Due date is August 5th.

Fic Requirements? I tried to keep it open and not restrict people’s creativity so requirements are 1500 word minimum, must be Bangtan fandom or at least the main fandom, and most be influenced by the song picked/assigned.

How are assignments done? You blind pick a prompt (such as Prompt E) and you will be sent the three songs associated with that prompt. You may pick from those three songs. You can decide how it influences you - is it the lyrics? the tone? one specific line? Up to you!

Tumblr for challenge: @btssongfic

[No complaining about song choices…<3]

r, t, w?

R: Are there any writers (fanfic or otherwise) you consider an influence?

For writing in general, I’ve been realizing more and more how influenced I am by Tamora Pierce I am in general– for female characters, magic systems, and world building.

For fic writing, I’m enabled influenced by folks like @zombee, @swordtheguy, @run-on-lightning, @coreywwilliams, @oathkeeper-of-tarth and @dr-jekyl.

T: Any fandom tropes you can’t stand?

Sex pollen. Ugh, sex pollen. I know why it exists, but it hits my own ace-driven squickiness towards sex, along with a whole ugly roiling pit of consent issues. (I have only read one, which is a Welcome to Night Vale fic called “Anyone But You (no one but you)” by @xparrot, which is a specific deconstruction of the trope, with two asexual characters recovering after the experience.

Otherwise, I get seriously uncomfortable by pairing adults with children, especially if they have an antagonistic relationship (e.g. SnapeXHermione.) Serious side-eye to the Gravity Falls fandom on that one.

W: Do you like more general prompts, or more specific ones?

General, usually. I like the chance to be creative with what I’m given, although the challenge of more specific ones can be fun from time to time.

when i first saw you in the tag it was after a wave of negatively and i thought "oh boy, here we fucking go" but i checked out your blog and i'm glad i did! You're so happy and polite, crit where it's due and you've picked up so much foreshadowing and little character quirks that i've missed. you've really rekindled my interest in tsubasa and its like im reading it all over again

Oh my goodness, thank you. This is such a wonderful message. I’m so glad I can counteract even a small part of whatever negative stuff might be out there, and I’m genuinely thrilled that your interest in Tsubasa is growing again!

Friendly reminder that asexuals are accepted in almost every official LGBT+ organization and there is absolutely nothing ace exclusionists and gatekeepers can do about it 🏳️‍🌈♠️💜🌈

remember when zayn and louis didnt have a fucking clue what the lyrics of stockholm syndrome were even though it was added to the setlist so when they had to perform it live they sounded like drunk 14 year olds being forced to do karaoke like zayn sang literally one line of his solo then just went “stockkhooolmmm syndrommeee… eerrrgmmmmhsmmmuuu… BEIN HELD BY U” and louis sang the words to half of harrys solo instead like “who’s that shadow holding my hand… talkin bout her eyes….” louis did u really think thats what the song was

[ Just realized that I never posted this here~ but fun fact, this is the very first drawing of Professor Kukui I ever did lol way back before the games even came out!
