Alabama movie theater won’t screen ‘Beauty and the Beast’ because of “gay moment”

  • Henagar Drive-In Theatre in Henagar, Alabama, announced on its Facebook page in a since-deleted posted that it will not be screening the upcoming live-action Beauty and the Beast adaptation because it features an out gay character.
  • “If we can not take our 11-year-old granddaughter and 8-year-old grandson to see a movie, we have no business watching it,” the post reads. “If I can’t sit through a movie with God or Jesus sitting by me then we have no business showing it." 
  • WHNT reported a mixed reaction to the announcement on the theater’s Facebook page. One commented said “Kudos!” and another wrote, "We must stand against evil if we are followers of Jesus Christ." 
  • In the past year, movies like Hidden Figures, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Moonlight, have taught America the power of on-screen representation. But the people of Henagar, Alabama, will have to wait a little longer to bear witness to that kind of progress. Read more (¾/17 12:15 PM)
