I'm a really big girl and I nothing looks even remotely flattering on me. I can't even bring myself to go clothes shopping anymore because it brings me to tears every time. Any advice on getting past that?
Oh my darling.
First of all, say these words to yourself: “FUCK FLATTERING”. The whole concept of “flattering” is rooted in mainstream beauty ideals that women have been torturing themselves to fit into for far, far too damn long.
Secondly, decide what sort of style you want to wear. Goth? Mori girl? Pastel princess? What styles call to you? What styles make you happy whenever you see examples of them?
Thirdly, keep repeating “FUCK FLATTERING” to yourself. No, I’m serious. You need to keep telling yourself this, because you are a wonderful, magical girl, and you deserve to like (love!) yourself.
Fourthly, Start searching the internet for plus size fashion retailers. I know there’s a list that periodically goes around on tumblr that lists a bunch of them, and if it crosses my dash again, I’ll reblog it.
Fifth of all, start accumulating clothes that are in the style you like, AND WEAR THEM. Know that you are dressed the way you want.
If people dare tell you that what you’re wearing is “not flattering”, or if your own body image demons start up a chorus of insults, hold your head high, remind yourself that you deserve to look the way you want to, and that I, your Auntie Jilli, have faith that someday you will believe that.
Other peeps reading this: do you have fashion links and retailers for big girls? Please reblog this post with those links!
Once again, my darling anon: you are a wonderful girl, and you deserve to look the way you want to.
