A daily dose of Bach

French Suite No.5 in G major, BWV 816 - 2. Courante

András Schiff, piano

Gradence Band AU ~ The Alley Cats

the much needed local band!AU with:

Credence, Newt and Tina, who play for free in a bar that’s often overrun with Bikers and or college kids.

there is no wailing, because Credence is not allowed on vocals, ever, now unplug that mic.

when handsome mysterious tattoed and chainsmoking Drifter!Graves comes through town and visits the bar, there’s an instant connection between him and the cute brunette on drums.

Song: Daylight
Artist: Thundercat
Year: 2011
Why it’s Dope: Great production that finds that perfect balance of roughness and clarity, idyllic singing(and bass playing) from Thundercat that makes the track super vivid, solid instrumentation that has an adventurous feel to it, and an awesome keyboard solo to end the track out with style.
P.S. I’m listening to his new album right now! I’m on my third listen, and I think it’s great!!! Please, tell me what you think of it once you’ve listened to it! :) :) :)

yay! I went to see Ghost and I came back to home last week. :-) it was…sooo fun, wonderful travel!! unfortunately I couldn’t meet the band after the show, but show was great… although lawsuit is still ongoing, I didn’t think about that during the show, because Papa was Papa. I was smiling. fortunately, I was able to go to second row in Stockholm so it was so close to the band. I got good view and I was seeing Papa’s eyes. (especially his right naked eye…) and his finger action, move… he is definitely charismastic, so cool, I came to love him more!!  it’s unforgettable memories and amazing experience. new Ghouls were different from former, but I didn’t think they are bad. especially I like Water. I thought keyboard solo was improved. I don’t hate his style, it was cool. anyway Papa had strong energy and aura. It gave me strength it’s true.

in Stockholm, I think maybe Papa’s kids were coming to beside stage. it’s my favorite scene when Papa was giving signal them. so cute. and I was happy to see his these side. :)

inside of the band are confusing now, but there’re good thing that doesn’t change. I’m not sure what is truth or justice, it’s true that Ghost is still my favorite. and I went to Linköping the day before the show to visit cathedral and recordshop Bengans and mostly finding the place that house of MCC’s promo photo. very beautiful city. I also got great experience from that place. I’ll go to travel again!️ thanks for reading!!

and more surprised thing, I was able to get Aether’s pick!! unbelievable!

Ghost

On this day in music history: April 24, 1961 - “Runaway” by Del Shannon hits #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 4 weeks, also peaking at #3 on the R&B singles chart. Written by Del Shannon and Max Crook, it is the biggest hit for the singer/songwriter from Grand Rapids, MI. Originally titled “Little Runaway”, Shannon and his bandmate Crook write and record the song a few years earlier. They re-record the song at the suggestion of their manager after signing with New York based Big Top Records. The Musitron keyboard solo (invented by Crook) becomes one of the most distinctive and memorable parts of the record. Entering the Hot 100 at #77 on March 6, 1961, climbing to the top of the chart seven weeks later. “Runaway” is later covered by numerous artists over the years including versions by Elvis Presley, Bonnie Raitt and The Traveling Wilburys. Del Shannon re-records the song himself in 1967 as “Runaway ‘67” for Liberty Records, though it does not chart on the Hot 100. The original 1961 recording of “Runaway” is certified Gold in the US by the RIAA, and is inducted into the Grammy Hall Of Fame in 2002.

Cory Henry’s solo on “Lingus”

I’m going to retire this tumblr and leave this post at the top for posterity. The world is dark right now, but about three months back, I found this video which has been church to me ever since.

It’s pretty simple: an upbeat, odd time signatured, fairly dorky prog jazz song played live in-studio with an audience by the funk band Snarky Puppy (oof that name, as though lonelysandwich were any better) and at 4:20, the extraterrestrial genius Cory Henry takes a keyboard solo that elevates it above music, above performance, into religious territory. Watch his bandmates’ faces as he plays. Watch the other keyboardist take off his headphones and stand up laughing because he just can’t take it any longer. They’ve never seen anything like this. You’ve never seen anything like this. This is a man who speaks the language of his instrument with such a profound gift that music is transcended. I believe this solo to prove the existence of God.

But not all by itself. Because once the importance of this solo hit me, I started to research and found that it’s not an unheralded fluke. This solo is a cultural event, and millions of people have been touched by it. This Reddit thread about the solo invites people to weigh in and break down its impact with theory.

This guitarist, Jonathan Asperil covers the solo so virtuosically, so in sync that it seems like a special effect:

This French vocalist, Camille Bertault, scats along to the solo with such effortless grace you’d think she has a MIDI cord plugged into the back of her neck.

So it’s not just Cory Henry’s solo by itself that makes me believe this piece of musical splendor was put on our planet for a reason…it’s the planet’s response to it. If I believed that music were the spiritually divine’s encoded messages attempting to tell us that yes, there’s a truth to existence, and that nature is harmony (which I do), then this is my Bible. I’ll leave it here and wish us all good luck.

after seeing sufjan live and hearing him say “i heard the voice of god and it sounded like this” and then playing a keyboard solo reminiscent of the noises on the age of adz and enjoy your rabbit was so..like i feel like that was such a key part in truly understanding his music and why it sounds how it does. it just made everything hes made have such a powerful context to it? like, him having that element of electronic noise in his music isnt random or Weird its just him incorporating The Voice Of God into his work in a way ive never seen or heard anyone do that before which is why i really love enjoy your rabbit and age of adz So much…..

Ghost - Meliora

Okay, let’s get a couple of bothersome things out of the way regarding Sweden’s Ghost. They look like this:

And I mean they always look like this, at least, any time they’re in public as Ghost. Here they are accepting their Grammy for “Cirice:”

When they aren’t in public as Ghost, no one even knows who they are. These dudes have actual, real-life secret identities. Skeleton Pope there is the singer, who goes by Papa Emeritus (currently P.E. III; they make a big show of pretending to fire him and replacing him before each new album, though it’s always been the same guy). The five instrumentalists are known only as “Nameless Ghouls.” All their songs (most of which are about Satan) are credited to “a Ghoul Writer.”
It’s all incredibly silly, I know. One of the reasons I can let it slide is that, unlike most metal acts who indulge in similar theatrics (*cough*every fucking black metal band ever*cough cough*), they know. Still, if I had seen them before I heard them, I might well have refused to give them a chance. Which would have been a real shame, because they are sooooo good. Their first two albums are both excellent, but 2015’s Meliora is their crowning achievement, in my opinion.
Album opener “Spirit” kicks off with church bells and a spooky keyboard melody. The rest of the band comes in like rolling thunder before settling into a combination of pulsating riff and hypnotic vocals, reminiscent of the futuristic, mechanical style of Voivod’s Nothingface. Except this is far more accessible than Voivod ever was*.
“From the Pinnacle to the Pit” is delightfully menacing, dripping with attitude, driven by a surly, swaggering bass riff. I love Ghost’s bass player; he isn’t flashy, but he never lets you forget that he’s there.
“Cirice” begins with a sinister instrumental intro that gradually builds to a driving, midtempo riff. Throw in some squealing falsetto, and “Cirice” could be. not just a Mercyful Fate song, but the greatest Mercyful Fate song. It’s no accident that this is what won them a Grammy; it’s dark, mysterious, and heavy, but also catchy as hell.
“Spoksonat,” a pretty instrumental interlude, leads into “He Is,” which is probably the most inspirational song about Satan ever written. Haunting verses over acoustic guitars give way to one of the most uplifting, anthemic choruses I’ve ever heard. Impossible not to sing along.
“Mummy Dust” is the most vicious song on Meliora, with its palm-muted riffs and hissed vocals. It could almost be thrash metal, if not for the prevalence of keyboards (there’s even a keyboard solo!). In fact, keyboards are all over this album, and despite my natural antipathy towards keyboards in metal, they are never anything but an asset here.
“Majesty” is their homage to early Seventies hard rock. With its crunchy guitars, organ, laid-back groove, and vaguely Eastern flourishes, it calls to mind Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and Uriah Heep.
“Devil Church,” Meliora’s second instrumental, is a majestic processional made of harmonized guitars and pipe organ.
“Absolution” starts off like classic Judas Priest, switches gears and goes full arena rock for the chorus, then doubles down for a guitar solo and bridge that call to mind Kansas and Styx at their most epic.
The album closes with “Deus in Absentia,” which I can only describe as a sort of gothic tango with a huge, stately chorus, complete with some Queen-esque guitar work.
Their music is dark and complex and as theatrical as you would expect, displaying impressive stylistic range, drawing from a wide variety of influences. Their heaviness doesn’t depend upon volume or speed or abrasiveness (no Cookie Monster vocals!). They possess a gift for infectious melodies and are clearly unafraid of defying genre conventions, which I’m sure has huge swaths of the metal community howling that they’re sellouts, or they aren’t “true” metal. I can’t bring myself to care; I’ve been listening to this stuff long enough to know no band will ever be metal enough for everybody. What I do care about is that these guys have made an album that I can’t stop listening to, one that I’m convinced will stand the test of time.

*There are bands whose music is an acquired taste, and then there’s Voivod, whose every individual album is a separate acquired taste unto itself.
