My entry for @unclejackfunhour‘s Halloween Contest. I’m not so good at drawing scary things, despite reading Emily Carroll’s work and Junji Ito’s stories, but I’m trying.

No one knows when or how she came, most likely because everyone forgot. Burning Rosie is called that because of two things: Her victims are turned into a charred corpse, and she leaves burnt rose petals around them. Survivors describe her as an ever-glowing woman in a tattered dress, carrying a lantern. Another noticeable feature is that she is always frowning, which leads to the theory that she might have been a Downer in her past life.

Perhaps she is the reason the town has a curfew, because Rosie only appears at night. She wanders the almost empty streets with her lantern, looking as if looking for someone or something. Any unfortunate Bobby who happens to come across her path on a patrol would very likely end up dead.

There had been few sightings of Burning Rosie in the Garden District, but many say that she is less hostile to Wastrels. Instead of attacking people, she would come into empty houses and stare at the toys and drawings on the wall.

Grace was nervous and excited and her belly was doing flips like a UH cheerleader at half-time. She looked at her phone for the billionth time in the last 30 minutes and checked her outfit in the mirror one more time. Tonight was a BIG night. She was finally going out on a date … a SOLO date. Sure, she’d gone on group dates before and there’d been some hand-holding and some hugging but this was the REAL thing. Tommy’d asked if she’d like to go to the movies and Danno had said it was OK, so long as she was home by curfew and had her phone with her at all times. (She was a cop’s kid … she knew better than to think she’d ever live if she broke curfew). Tommy was picking her up at home (she was pretty sure Uncle Chin had run a complete background check and a license history before they’d said it was OK for her to get into a car with him) Auntie Kono had taken her out shopping for a new dress and she’d even slipped a little lipgloss into the bag (Don’t tell Daddy Steve, ok?).

Tommy was coming to pick her up in 5 minutes so she headed down the stairs, hoping that she’d convince Danno & Daddy Steve to put their guns and grenades away. (again, cop’s kid. She knew the intimidation drill by now). As she came down into the living room, she blinked. Danno was sitting on the couch watching the Jets game, as calm as she’d ever seen him. There wasn’t a single piece of ordinance anywhere and he wasn’t even wearing a holster. “OK, so maybe he’s playing the good guy. That means Daddy is the bad guy.”

She leaned over and stole a handful of popcorn from the bowl on the couch before smiling at Danno. “Jets losing again, Dad?”

“For your information, Monkey the game is not over yet so there’s absolutely no way to determine whether the Jets are going to win or lose. These are not predetermined fates! They could come back and tie the game! There could be overtime … not that you’d see it. No, you have more important things to do on a Sunday than hang out with your old man and watch the Jets game!”

She giggled and kissed his forehead, sneaking another look at her phone. 3 minutes. She went looking for Daddy Steve and found him on the lanai, drying himself off from a swim apparently. She tried to be subtle as she looked around for the inevitable mound of hand grenades and knives … and swallowed her surprise when there was nothing.

“Hey Princess. You about ready to go? Tommy should be here soon, right?”, Daddy Steve asked, his voice full of sincerity and nonchalance. She didn’t trust either of them.

“Yeah, he’ll be here in a few. He texted when he was leaving his house and he’s a very safe driver so he’d never text and drive.”, she was hoping to head off any worry about how good a driver he was. She couldn’t shake this feeling that the other shoe was about to drop any minute now … They were being too calm about this entire thing. (Daughter of a Detective and a SEAL. Suspicion had served her well). Just then, her phone bleeped and she looked at the screen.

Just pulled up. U rdy?

She smiled and showed Steve her phone, to prove that he’d only texted 20 minutes ago and then just now. Her belly did another flip when she heard the doorbell and she raced through the house to answer it. By the time she made it from the lanai to the front door, Danno was standing there with the door open, inviting Tommy inside. Not a gun or a hand grenade in sight.

“Hey Tommy! Come on it. Grace is just on the lan … Oh, there you are!”, Danno smiled as he stepped to the side and leaned up against Steve, who’d followed Grace. They were both smiling. Grace’s spidey sense was tingling off the charts. “They wouldn’t have a detail following us. Not even my Dads are that paranoid … right?” Now the thought wouldn’t leave her head and her hand started to sweat. “Get a hold of yourself, Grace. HPD and the Governor would never approve resources being wasted like that.

“So I guess we’ll head out then. We’re going to see the new Avengers movie and then maybe we’ll stop for shave ice before coming back. The movie gets out at 6 o’clock and Kamekona’s is only 2 minutes away from the theatre. I’ll have her home by 8pm, no problem Sir … s”, Tommy’s voice was just a little shaky. His eyes flickered between the two men in front of him. He’d known them all his life … you didn’t live on the island and NOT know who Five-0 was. He was only slightly nervous … but they didn’t scare him, per say. He’d seen them picking Grace up for years and had even hung out at the house a few times for surf parties. But now … well, who wouldn’t be nervous on their first date?

Both Danno and Steve smiled and shook his offered hand before opening the front door for them to leave. They wished them a good night and Grace let out a relieved breath. Maybe they’d decided intimidation wasn’t the best option. Maybe they’d been completely mature about her first date and they really did just want her to ha …. wait, who was that?

Her eyes adjusted to the sunlight and she looked up in time to see a lithe figure walking up the path to the house. Dressed in a pair of jean cutoffs and a loose tank, Auntie Kono looked just as casual as any other native … except for the sniper rifle she was casually holding in her grasp. She smiled as she stopped right in front of Tommy.

“You must be Tommy Lupenai. I’m Grace’s auntie, Officer Kono Kalakaua and I was just stopping by to show off my new toy. Isn’t it sweet? I’m so looking forward to having my first target.”

Kono narrowed her eyes just the tiniest little bit and Grace felt Tommy go stiff beside her. “There it is. The other shoe.”, Grace smirked as she shook her head.

“Auntie Kono, we’re gonna be late. Tommy promised Daddy and Danno to have me home by curfew.”

“OK Grace. You two have fun. Call if you need anything. You know with the lights and sirens, we can be anywhere on the island in less than 10 minutes.”, Kono caressed her gun lovingly and pinned Tommy with another look before Grace managed to pull him around towards the car.

“I’m so sorry. I know my family can be a little … much.” Grace apologized as soon as they were inside the car. Tommy was sitting in the driver’s seat and he laughed nervously.

“No, I get it. To be honest, I was expecting it a little … I’ve known you since we were 10 years old. But I was really expecting it to be Mr. McGarrett or Mr. Williams but … uh … yeah, your auntie is a little intense.”

They shared a nervous laugh as they pulled away from the curb and Grace chanced a look in the rear window. Standing on the front porch, she could see her 2 dads and her auntie with their arms crossed over their chests, watching them pull away.

Her ohana was insane but she knew deep down how loved she was (again, daughter of a detective and an insane Navy SEAL, niece to a crazed Hawaiian with an itchy trigger finger and she’d never felt more loved)

So those who know on discord. I’m gonna be doing a late night stream once I get home from work to make up for last weekend. We’re gonna chill to some good late night songs while I line art some drawings. Stream will start at 11:15 pm PST (2:15 am EST) on picarto. (I’ll send the link once I’m home since I’m using my phone)

Most of you guys have a curfew or had a long day which is understandable and I’m not going to stop you from your sleep cause you need it! But if you’re down for it, grab some blankets and a nice cup of your fav drink and enjoy.

Captain Johnson Breaks Promise, Uses Tear Gas And Military Vehicles Against Ferguson Protesters

August 17th, 2014

Captain Johnson broke a direct promise he made on Saturday when officers and SWAT under his control broke up the night’s demonstration using military-like vehicles and tear gas while enforcing a midnight curfew.

Johnson insisted at a press conference earlier in the day that those methods would not be used.

We won’t enforce it with trucks, we won’t enforce it with tear gas. We’ll communicate. We’ll talk about, you know what, it’s time to go home,” Johnson told a boisterous crowd.

But shortly after midnight, when the curfew went into effect, riot police equipped with rifles, shields and five armored vehicles, shot tear gas and smoke grenades to disperse defying protesters chanting “No Justice, No Curfew”.

It was initially unclear whether tear gas or smoke was volleyed. Police spokesmen on the ground told reporters there that the anti-riot agent they were using was merely smoke.

But several reporters tweeted pictures of the canisters they picked off the ground which showed that riot CS smoke was being used.

Newly obtained surveillance video shows the violent encounter between a 17-year-old girl and Clairton police officers that left the teenager in the hospital.

A 17-year-old girl claims she was beaten by police in Clairton after she and her friends were stopped for a curfew violation Tuesday night.

Merceedez Wright admits she and her friends were out a few minutes after the city’s 10 p.m. curfew, and that she both ran from officers and resisted them after being tackled, but she doesn’t believe she deserves the injuries she suffered.

Wright is now recovering in the hospital with injuries to her trachea, esophagus and neck, plus several cuts and bruises.

“She’s a cheerleader, she’s a lifeguard at the Clairton pool, she was just on prom court,” said Wright’s mother, Audelia Amoah. “She’s a good kid.”

Even so, Wright admits she ran from officers.

“I was scared because of how he got out of the car. He didn’t just walk out, he jumped out of the car and started chasing me, so my first instinct was to run,” she said.

Wright also said she did resist officers once she was knocked to the ground. She said she was trying to get her arms free to protect herself.

Clairton police did not respond to requests for comment.
