George Savvas
by George Savvas, Public Relations Director, Disneyland Resort

Actors Laura Carmichael and Michelle Dockery, known to millions as feuding sisters Lady Edith Crawley and Lady Mary Crawley on the award-winning television series “Downton Abbey,” visited the Disneyland Resort during a recent trip to Los Angeles.

They were greeted by none other than Goofy, who showed up de rigueur to Sleeping Beauty Castle in his formal finest. This was the first Disneyland visit for both of them, and when I asked if they were here to celebrate something special, Michelle exclaimed, “Life!”

In addition to the sisters Crawley, this fun group also included actors Jessica de Gouw, Kelly Paterniti and another Downton alumnus, Michael Fox. Following our mild morning tomfoolery, they set out for their first attraction — Hyperspace Mountain!

Nina Simone

Nina Simone’s birthday is this week!

Nina Simone was a famous jazz singer, pianist, and song writer whose work was deeply influence by her experience as a black woman in the United States.  Her bold and intelligent lyrical protests garnered the attention and friendship of monumental figures of her day such as James Baldwin, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Stokely Carmichael, and Langston Hughes. Songs such as “Strange Fruit,” about white lynchings of black Americans, and “Mississippi Goddam,” a response in part to the murder of Medgar Evers in Mississippi, formed part of her collection of protest songs.  Her lyrics brazenly and angrily called out America for its violent and unjust treatment of its African American citizens. In an interview, Simone said, “When every day is a matter of survival I don’t think you can help but be involved. Young people, black and white, know this. That’s why they’re so involved in politics. We will shape and mould this country, or it will not be moulded and shaped at all.”

From the Cleveland L. Sellers, Jr. Papers, 1934-2003 held by the Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture.

Susie Carmichael from Rugrats~^^

I actually owe a lot to her because her singing and dreaming while she did it in “All Grown Up” was how I discovered my own singing talents and how much I loved doing it<3

She’s also just the best, cuz she was always kind and generous and protective and I really admired her for it which made her my favorite Rugrats character!!! :D

There’s no arguing that there are a number of secrets within the American Army. One such disturbing secret is what happened to Billy Ray Hardgrove and Michael Carmichael.

After serving in the Gulf War, Hardgrove recommended his platoon for a medal. This recommendation was declined, however Hardgrove forced the signatures of his superiors. This deed was uncovered and he was charged with forgery. While awaiting court-martial, a soldier arrived at his door and told him that he was required to come along to a training exercise. He was never seen alive again. His body was soon discovered swaying from a tree - the Army claimed he committed suicide.

Hardgrove’s family and fellow soldier, Michael Carmichael, refused to believe that he had ended his own life and began their own investigation in an attempt to discover what had really occurred. Just a few months later, Carmichael too was discovered hanging from his own locker by a parachute cord. He too had allegedly committed suicide - at least that’s what the Army claimed.

The family of both young men believe that something sinister had taken place and had then been covered up by the Army.
