Malala is spending her 20th birthday fighting for girls’ education in Iraq

  • It’s been a big week for Malala Yousafzai.
  • On Friday, the women’s rights advocate announced from her newly launched Twitter account that she’d graduated high school.
  • “Graduating from secondary school … is bittersweet for me,” she wrote. “I’m excited about my future, but I know that millions of girls around the world are out of school and may never get the opportunity to complete their education.”
  • Yousafzai, not one to waste any opportunity, is already at work trying to help other girls have the same chance.
  • On Tuesday, she celebrated her 20th birthday a day early in Iraq by way of her “Girl Power Trip,” an initiative that involves Yousafzai traveling around the world to talk to girls who have struggled trying to access education. Read more (7/12/17)

PewDiePie, YouTube’s biggest star, is leaning into his new, far-right following

  • When Felix “PewDiePie” Kjellberg, YouTube’s most lucrative, popular superstar, uploaded a video featuring a banner with the words “Death to all Jews,” along with a man dressed as Jesus saying, “Hitler did absolutely nothing wrong,” he insisted it was jokes made in bad taste.
  • After losing his partnership with Disney, Kjellberg apologized, saying he was just poking fun at the “modern world.”
  • But attempts to distance himself from his message didn’t deter the so-called “alt-right” from accepting him as one of their own, nor did Kjellberg’s insistence that he wanted nothing to do with them.
  • Kjellberg may not support them, but in the few short months since his anti-Semitism scandal, far-right celebrities have become Kjellberg’s favorite new bedfellows. Read more (7/26/17)

New Justice League Trailer!

Y'all. John McCain really did have a tumor removed and got on a plane against doctor’s advice, essentially risking his life, so he could vote Yes on a motion to move the debate to repeal Obamacare forward.

LOL. “What a great American” my ass. IDGAF about him or his family or what they’re going through “in this trying time.” Putting on a uniform and going to war doesn’t automatically make you a great human being and John McCain is a shitty American just like the rest of the GOP.

Christian university rejects $3 million donation so it can keep its LGBTQ group
An American university has rejected $3m (£2.3m) funding from a Christian organisation that demanded it shut down an LGBT students' group.

Samford University, a private Christian school in Alabama, rejected a $3 million donation from a group of churches who wanted the school to shut down its newly-formed LGBTQ student group.

Samford’s LGBTQ group, Samford Together, only formed this year. The Alabama Baptist Convention offered the sizable donation on the grounds that the school reject Samford Together. The school decided to voluntarily reject the donation and keep the LGBTQ group going.

“I believe the action taken by our trustees is something that both parties have been anticipating for some time and will serve the best interests of both Samford and the Alabama Baptist State Convention,” said university president Andrew Westmoreland.

“Our longstanding educational and ministry relationships with Alabama Baptists have always been more significant than money, and these relationships will continue and flourish.”

Dr Westmoreland added he wanted the university to address topics related to human sexuality and "other important issues at the intersection of Christian understanding and cultural reality.”

He stopped short of offering formal recognition to Samford Together, but said the university would “work to accomplish each of the group’s worthy goal.”

It warms my heart to see a story about a religious school that does right by its LGBTQ students, even at an actual financial cost. They’re not as commonplace as they should be.
