Lights in the Sky

Wincest Writing Challenge: (June) | @ilostmyshoe-79 vs. @wetsammywinchester

Prompt: Fireflies

Pairing (s): Wincest, Dean/Sam

Word Count: 2700

Summary: Snapshots of Sam and Dean’s life together.

Tags/Triggers: none (I wrote something without smut. what???)

Dean glances across the small yard. “Yeah, Sammy?”

“Look! Lights?” Sam points a child-chubby finger into the air. His tiny arm is silhouetted against the darkening sky, and Dean squints into that weird time of dusk when things are visible until he looks right at them. They seem to disappear into the night when he looks too hard.

I just watched a few of James Rofle/AVGN's reccent videos on Power Rangers, and although it felt like there's still a lot he doesn't know/got wrong irt Tokusatsu, he WAS right in that there is a LOT of overlap between Tokusatsu and Anime (& Japanese media in general), in terms of specific genres and traits (giant robos, etc.). Do you think that we have Shotaro Ishimori, Eiji Tsubaraya and Go Nagai, among others that I'm probably forgetting/I don't know, to thank for that; the former especially?

Oh yes we do!  All of the gentlemen you mentioned above also dabbled in anime (not so much Eiji Tsuburaya himself but his production company certainly did).  In fact, Go Nagai was an apprentice to Shotaro Ishinomori as a manga writer before branching out on his own and Ishinomori was apprenticed to the God of Manga himself, Osamu Tezuka.

In fact, the very first five man team in history was in an anime from 1966 called Rainbow Sentai which was created by Shotaro Ishinomori.

Of course, we also have to acknowledge the debt Super Sentai owes to Tatsunoko Productions and Kagaku Ninjatai Gatchaman, which brought a lot of the tropes that would later become accepted in the live action medium to the forefront.

Heck, one of the most popular pre-Power Ranger Super Sentai series was a direct homage to Gatchaman, 1991′s Choujin Sentai Jetman.

Ishinomori was such a force in manga, anime and tokusatsu.  I could go on and on about his contributions including; Kamen Rider, The Toei Fushigi Comedy Series, Brother Fist Bycrosser, Cyborg 009, Android Kikaider but that would take the entire rest of this ask and we have other people to talk about!

Go Nagai was no slouch either.  He pretty much popularized the concept of the piloted giant robot with his seminal work, Mazinger Z.

Before that, of course, we had Tetsujin 28 and Giant Robo but those were robots remote controlled or self-controlled.  Go Nagai pretty much invented the over the top giant, piloted robot.  The success of which lead to a deal with Marvel Comics to license these giant robots for an American comic and allowed the Japanese to use Marvel properties, which lead to the tokusatsu Spider-Man.  Spider-Man was given a giant robot to sell the concept in Japan and that, in turn, lead to the giant robots being added to the Sentai franchise to create Super Sentai.

Go Nagai was no stranger to tokusatsu either.  Among his toku works were;

Star of Pro-Wrestling Azteckaiser

and Battle Hawk

As for Tsuburaya Productions, they had a hand in some anime as well including animated versions of Ultraman.

And one of my personal favorites, the weird anime/tokusatsu hybrid Dinosaur War Aizenborg!

That’s not even to mention all the writers, directors and producers who have worked on both tokusatsu and anime.  An example today is Gen Urobuchi who is responsible for both Puella Magi Madoka Magika

and Kamen Rider Gaim

He’s even currently working on the anime adaptation of one of the grand-daddies of tokusatsu, Godzilla!

So yeah, tokusatsu and anime are so intertwined it would be hard to separate one from the other.  They draw inspiration from each other, share talent and help influence Japanese culture in general.  If it hadn’t been for being in the anime fandom in the early 1990s, -I- never would have gotten into tokusatsu!

This is really only scratching the surface of a very interesting topic and I wish I had more time to get really in depth with it but I don’t.  I hope this at least helps to answer your question.

Edit: I totally loved James Rolfe’s Power Rangers episodes.  He always makes me laugh!

Not sure if you're open to prompts but: 5 times stiles and derek play fought platonically (ish) and the one time they did it romantically ;)

Read on AO3.

Derek took in a deep, deep breath as yet another popcorn bounced off his forehead, his jaw clenched tightly, his nostrils flaring, and his eyes firmly glued to the screen where the movie was playing. He wasn’t paying attention to it, hadn’t been paying attention to it since the first popcorn hit his cheek and fell into his lap. He wasn’t even entirely sure they were watching the same movie they had started out with anymore, actually.

The hundredth - exaggeration, it was probably only the twentieth - popcorn hit him, bounced off his nose, and he had finally had enough of it.

“Will you quit it?” he snapped, turning to glare at where Stiles was seated on the armchair to the left of the couch, a pile of popcorn in his hand and a wide grin on his lips.

Schooled: Part 6--Fight Song

And here it is, finally, part 6, written for the SoMa week prompt feisty. Not even a week late! Hopefully, part 7 is soon to follow.

Thank you @makapedia for looking it over–you’re the best!

You can also read this on FFN here and on AO3 here.

Day 1 / Day 2 / Day 3 /  Day 4 / Day 5 /

Jolted awake by the sharp rap on his door, he glanced at the glaring green numbers flashing 5:30 on his alarm and groaned, burying his head under his pillows.

“Soul!” her voice called from the other side of the door, followed by another sharp knock. “Time to get up–we’re meeting Blake in half an hour.”

“Screw Blake,” he muttered.

He heard the door open and shut and suddenly he was cold as the covers were yanked away.

“Not my type.” Maka pulled the pillow from his head. “Now get up. Those legs aren’t going to tone themselves!” She poked his soft inner thigh for emphasis.

“‘M I your type?” He grinned sharply at her. “There’re other ways to tone my legs.”

“Don’t be gross.” She slammed his pillow back into his middle hard enough to leave him winded, then shook her head. “You have ten minutes. I’ll have eggs ready.”

She was gone a moment later, the memory of her retreating backside serving as a blazing advertisement of just how toned it was possible to get. With a sigh, Soul rolled out of bed to shuck on some sweat pants and a ratty band tee, then shoved some work clothes in a bag and exited his bedroom to join his roommate for breakfast.

Some scrambled eggs, toast, a glass of orange juice, and a short motorcycle ride later, and they were in the school gym, doing squat lifts with Blake. Maka always did emphasize the importance of leg strength. Ignoring the snickers of the nearby wrestling team who were engaged in morning practice, their amusement over the fact that the lithe girl next to him was squatting a lot more weight than he was really not worth a second glance, Soul focused the really bad pop playing from the boom box in the corner and remembered that this would be over soon enough. But man oh man did he hate leg day; his thighs would burn later.

At least he had the sparring portion to look forward to. Because he lived for the sparring portion.

Excuse me - I was reading Cartographer's Craft recently for the first time (I needed beach reading!) and it got me really curious about how Animagus Winter changed as it turned into Nameless, because it seems to have been a fair bit. Is there a post talking about that somewhere, by any chance? because I am very interested.

Oh man, I wish I had documented it as I went.

For those of you who don’t have all the context on this, the fanfic Cartographer’s Craft is here; in it there is an OC named Ellis Graveworthy, a novelist who wrote several books that are key to the story, which you can read about here if you don’t want to read 43 chapters of Harry Potter AU fanfic. One of those books, Animagus Winter, became the skeletal structure of my first original novel, Nameless.

So, Nameless and Animagus Winter. There is some discussion of the process of writing Nameless in the afterword of the book, which you can read for free here. (If you like the book, consider buying a copy!)

But how did Animagus Winter get to be Nameless? Trigger warnings for discussion of depression and suicide behind the cut. Yay, let’s tell a cheery story…

when I was waiting for Winter Dragon to air a couple nights ago I had a few minutes so I started painting Tuon to kill time.

Then after I watched Winter Dragon the first time the guy with the stream played it like three more times and I forgot I was going to finish this and basically all I can think about anymore is Billy Zane, the Betrayer of Hope.

“You know what would be good for you?” Nate questioned turning down my street. Luckily Massey and Jessey were completely understanding about the whole Jack situation and we managed to go back to the meeting like nothing had happened.

“Hhhm?” I hummed, my attention outside the window.

“Why don’t we have Johnson and Sammy come over?” He smiled, looking away from the streets. A smile filled my face before I turned to look at him.

“Sounds good.” i spoke before we pulled up in the driveway. Nate nodded and parked the car.

We both got out of the car and headed inside, Nate seeming closer to me than before. But I knew he was trying to just comfort me.

I let out a sigh of relief as the air condition brushed me in the face.

“Jesus that feels so nice.” I moaned, leaning up against the wall. Nate might have not minded the heat but I was burning up. I could hear him chuckle before he walked into the living room.

“I’ll go call the guys-”

“And I will order pizza.” I smiled, finishing his sentence for him. He smiled back before shaking his and going to sit on the couch. I made my way into the kitchen and pulled my phone out of my back pocket before dialling Pizza Hut.

Danielle and Ella came walking in, talking about something I guess before stumbling upon me.

“What’s going on?” Danielle asked opening the fridge and grabbing a yogurt.

“Sammy and Johnson are coming over.” I smiled before returning to my phone call.

“Oooo, that means Danielle gets to see her lover.” Ella teased before taking a sip of her water. I laughed brightly as a red began to spread on her cheeks.

“Stop! We’ve barely even talked!” Danielle shouted placing her hands over her face.

“Oh you say that now but what about last week when you two were dirty dancing all over the place.” I gushed making Ella burst out in laughter and Danielle’s jaw to drop.

“Oh my god I hate you!” She shrieked making me laugh harder.

I sat in-between Nate and Ally, music playing in background as we all conversated with each other. The pizza had shown up about 15 minutes ago but we promised Johnson and Sam that we would wait for them before we ate. Nate and I were currently thumb wrestling while talking about some new music he was working on when the doorbell rang.

“I’ll get it!” Ella shouted as she made her way from kitchen to the front door. She pulled it open before smiling.

“E! What’s up babe?” Johnson shouted before embracing her. Sammy greeted her as well before all three of them came into the living room. Everyone stood up and greeted the two with smiles and hugs before moving into the kitchen to grab pizza.

The girls and Sammy grabbed a couple pieces of pizza before exiting the room, Sam standing extremely close Danielle.

“Hey Y/n.” I turned my head to Johnson smiling softly, “How are you holding up?” And now the smile was gone. I ran my nail over my glass, looking down at my plate.

“Gilinsky won’t stop calling me, he even started something when I was in the middle of a meeting.” I sighed as I ran a hand over my face.

“Really?” Johnson asked, staring at me with big eyes. I nodded my head resting my back against the counter top.

“He’s so overwhelming. And I’m pretty sure he was out with some girl yesterday.” I pointed before taking a long sip of my water.

“I don’t know about that…, he’s really torn up over you.” Johnson spoke.

“Yeah, how sweet.”

“Y/n I’m serious.” My eyes darted up to his, “You were his first everything, and I’m sure it’s the same way around. He’s only acting like this because he’s never dealt with anything like this before.” I gazed at him for a while, acknowledging his words. He was right of course, Gilinsky was my first at anything. My first kiss, my first date, my first boyfriend, and he was the guy I lost my virginity to. Of course I was beyond hurt, but I was just better at masking my feelings than he was.

I nodded slightly at Johnson before grabbing my plate and heading into the living room. I wasn’t mad at what he said, it was probably true. But I wanted to get rid of Jack so I couldn’t get hurt again. I didn’t want to make the mistake of crawling back to him.

“Should we watch a movie?” Sammy asked, sitting next to Danielle on the loveseat. I smirked before quickly taking a bite of my pizza and settling into the couch. Nate came quickly in after me, returning to his seat beside me and throwing his arm over the back of the couch. I leaned comfortably into him before Johnson took the seat beside me, smiling apologetically. I smiled back before turning my head to the tv screen.

“What are we watching?” I called out, glancing around the room questionably.

“Some horror movie.” Danielle spoke pushing the play button. I nodded before falling silent.

“GUYS BE QUIET I’M TRYING TO HEAR!” Ella shouted making me laugh quietly. The room fell silent as everyone’s attention went back to the tv. I watched intensly as the guy lifted the knife high above his and her head.

“OH SHIT!” Nate shouted, tightening his arms around me. And then the guy slammed the knife into her causing screams to sound not only from the tv screen but also throughout our house. I buried my face further into Nate’s shoulder, holding on to him for dear life.

“Oh dear god that’s so unholy.” I mumbled into his chest hearing the extra sounds of the guy carving into the woman.

“I think I’m gonna be sick.” Johnson murmured behind me.

“There’s so much blood.” Ally sounded almost mesmerized as she spoke.

“I didn’t know we had so much inside of us.”

“It’s just gushing out of her-”

“Alright! We’re done with this movie!” I shouted before grabbing the remote and shutting it off. Groans and shouts were given out making me roll my eyes. “Look, you guys can watch this on your own time, I’m tired of all the blood and Johnson is turning green.” I announced as I pointed at the poor thing.

“Fine, it’s late anyways.” Sammy yawned looking down at the watch on his wrist. I nodded grabbing my phone from my back pocket and reading the time. 12:34

“You guys staying over?” I asked, looking between Johnson and Sammy.

“Well I don’t think she’ll let me leave.” I smiled big as Sammy acknowledge Danielle sleeping against him. Gosh they were so cute and they didn’t even know it.

“Yeah I’ll stay too.” Johnson spoke. I nodded before standing up and stretching.

“Well you’re allowed to any of the guest bedroom or you can stay on the couch.” Ella spoke before heading up the stairs.

“I heading upstairs.” I announced while yawning. My eyes darted over to Nate and he was already right behind me. We both said goodnight to everyone before going up the stairs to my bedroom.

“I am never watching another horror film ever again.” I called out as I grabbed some pajamas and headed into my bathroom. I could hear Nate laugh from the room making me shake my head.

“I understand where you’re coming from lil mama.” He called back. I chuckled softly before putting my shorts on. I threw the t-shirt on and walked over to my mirror. I grabbed one of the wipes on the counter and wiped my makeup off, feeling relief as I washed it all away.

“I’m probably going to have nightmares.” I spoke, throwing my hair up into a bun as I walked out of the bathroom. Nate was already in a pair of a his sweats he had brought over here when he realized he’d be spending a lot of time here. I took a short moment to admire his body. To me, looks didn’t really matter, but goddamn Nate changing my outlook on life.

“Don’t worry baby girl,” he looked up at me, “I’ll protect you.” He smiled. My heart instantly swelled over his words and my cheeks turned red. Nate was too good for me.

I walked over to him and wrapped my arms around him, pulling him tightly to me. His arms snaked around my waist before he pulled me tightly to his chest. My ears pricked at the sound of his beating heart, which was much steadier than mine.

“I know you will Nate.” I smiled up at him. He smiled back before pressing his lips to my forehead.. I let out a giggle before pulling away. I turned off the light before crawling into my bed beside Nate.

I curled into his side as he wrapped an arm around me.

“Night Nate.”

“Night babygirl.”

I couldn’t tell you how many hours had passed, since I had never bothered to buy an alarm clock, but it was still pitch black outside. I turned on my side, looking to see that Nate wasn’t there. My eyebrows furrowed together, but I just assumed he was in the bathroom.

I stood from the bed and grabbed my robe, wrapping it around myself and then heading downstairs.

It was completely dark in this big house causing me to stumble into walls and other pieces of furniture until I reached the kitchen.

A sigh of relief fell from my lips before I walked over to one of the cabinets, not bothering to turn on the light. As I reached for the glass I swore I saw something moving in the darkness, causing my heart to race.

“Nate…, is that you?” I called out, not moving from my spot. I waited patiently, wondering if he was going to pop out and scare me.

“Nate, i swear to god if that’s you-” Suddenly a pair of lips interrupted my furious words, scaring the shit out of me. The only reason I kissed back, was because the lips were so strangely familiar. I had also assumed that they were Nate’s…, but I’ve never kissed Nate before.

“Relax babygirl, I got you.” My eyes widened before the glass slipped from my fingers. It crashed against the wood, sending shards everywhere.

“Jack?! What the hell are you doing here?!” I shouted, anger quickly filling my chest. This was literally turning into a form of stalking.

“Shh, they’ll hear you.” he whisper-shouted, putting his hand on my mouth.

“I will not ‘shh’! Get out of my house,” I raised the volume of my voice even louder, hoping Nate would come down and help me out here.

“Baby listen-”

“Y/n?” A wave of relief flushed over me at the sound of Nate’s voice.

“I’m down here!” I called, glaring at Jack through dark, hoping he could see it, or at least feel it. Nate’s footsteps were coming down the hallway upstairs to the stairs, and I could feel Jack let go of me.

The front door opened the closed, signaling that Jack had left. Suddenly the lights switched on, blinding me momentarily before my eyes adjusted, seeing Nate standing there in his sweatpants.

“Baby girl, what are you doing up? And why is there broken glass everywhere?” There was confusion all over his face, his eyebrows knitting together as he looked at the glass shards.

“Nothing. I-I came down for some water and I accidently knocked over my glass.” My lips formed a fake smile, brushing the hair out of my eyes.

“Okay. Well don’t move, I don’t want you getting glass in your foot.” he mumbled making me smile. Nate was such a sweetheart.

He carefully walked around the glass, even though his feet were protected with some sandals he had on. Nate then lifted me off the floor and held me bridle style. I smiled at him softly before resting my head on his shoulder.

Once around the glass Nate sat me down on my feet and then turned back to the kitchen floor.

“I’ll clean this up, you go back to bed.” he sighed, grabbing the broom.

“Nate I can clean up after myself-”

“I got it Y/n, go to back to sleep.” he smiled. A huff came from my lips as I crossed my arms over my chest, glaring at Nate’s kindness. “I’ll be up there in a bit.” he reassured before pressing his lips to my forehead. I rolled my eyes before smiling softly.

Quietly I made my way upstairs and into my bedroom, shutting the door behind me.

As I began to get into the bed I noticed something on my desk, sitting on the keyboard. Hesitantly I approached it questioning if it was a bomb Madison might have planted.

My fingers tapped the top of it before hopping away, waiting for the explosion. Luckily nothing happened.

So i grasped the box and then lifted the top off. My eyes widened at the gem lying in the box. It was a necklace with a very large diamond in the middle. I lifted it out of the box and felt the weight on my palm.

My eyes caught sight of a small paper sitting at the bottom of the box and I grasped it.

“Meet me here. J.” There was an address on the bottom and the letter J making me sigh extremely loud.

“Jesus christ Jack.” I mumbled.

The sound of feet made me drop the necklace back in the box. I raced over to my bed and then dove under  the blankets.

My door opened and the shut. From the sound of the large sigh I could easily tell it was Nate. He pulled the covers back on his side before crawling under. He moved to my side wrapping his arm around my wait.

“I love you babygirl.” he mumbled into my hair before kissing my temple.

“I love you too Nate.” I smiled, turning around to face him. My eyes wandered over his face, looking to see how tired he was.

He gave a gentle smile, before trailing his hand away from my lip to my cheek. My chest felt tight, like how I felt whenever I was with Nate. This time it was stronger though, like his eyes were pulling me into a trance.

And That’s When It Happened.

He moved himself closer, looking from my eyes to my lips, making me anxious. He pressed his lips to mine and I suddenly lost myself in him. His lips were smooth and so soft against mine, and it was like how they described it in the books and movies. It was passionate and sow and everything in-between. But there was one thing that made this kiss less than perfect. Jack.

Nate pulled away and looked at me, like he wanted approval or something. So I just gave him a smile, a smile that could hide all of my thoughts that were ruining this amazing moment.

I burrowed myself into his chest, tightening my grip on him. He placed his arm back around me, sighing in content. Whereas I, could barely breathe.

So get ready…..
