(people are resources)

if you like capitalism so much go be a child laborer in a garment factory for nike.

capitalism is good in theory, but in practice it leads to oligarchy and global exploitation.

capitalism won’t work, it goes against human nature. most people don’t want to accelerate climate change.

oh, you believe in capitalism? heh, take a basic history class, kid.

the problem with capitalism is that eventually you run out of other people’s resources.

“People these days see abuse everywhere :(”

You’re absolutely right. People have more access to resources and knowledge of what constitutes abuse so they are able to see past justifications that have worked before. People are finally able to begin to challenge and put words into what has been normalized for years and years.

Children are being empowered to recognize demeaning comments and sexual comments/advances from their parents as not being okay. Children are being empowered to know that physical violence to encourage obedience is not a healthy behavior. Children are being empowered to know that their feelings are not “bad” or “good”, but are their bodies and minds trying to communicate with each other to keep them safe and help them learn their boundaries and needs.

Some adults never got the opportunity to know there was another way to live. Be glad that your children are being educated or have the opportunity to be educated on better ways to live. Be glad that your children are learning to be better parents for your future grandchildren. Be glad that you have the opportunity to research and improve.

unpaid internships are oppressive and should be illegal i’m not being cute or funny they are 100% designed to reward people with greater access to resources and i’m fundamentally opposed to hiring for unpaid labor every internship should be required to provide at least a nominal stipend

Ace/Aro discourse makes me so uncomfortable because like, it’s just the same bullshit that got thrown at me as a bi woman but with a different paint job.

  • “How can you be sure you’re bi ace/aro if you haven’t experimented?”
  • “We support bi ace/aro people, buuut only if they’re a very specific type of bi ace/aro.”
  • “Sure, bi ace/aro people are valid, they just don’t belong in the LGBT+ community”
  • “But the issue is bi ace/aro people are taking up resources from real LGBT+ people!”
  • “It’s just a phase!”
  • “Look, bi ace/aro people aren’t really marginalized. Any issues they face are just misdirected homo/transphobia.”
  • Bi Trans Ace/Aro people are just our oppressors trying to invade our spaces!”

You aren’t that slick, fuck off into the slime pit that is biphobes, terfs, and other assholes.

Why they never talk about no magic home ec class in Hogwarts.

Clearly they have spells for it.

Molly Weasley has knitting needles going, and while house elves do the cooking at Hogwarts presumably they use some magic there to keep up with the giant work load, and iirc, Molly uses magic to cook.

So, where the home ec class at.
Where the muggleborns with dread in their eyes thinking it’ll be a normal like, cooking class, [Harry all excited thinking he’s gonna ace this class or at least do alright, since he cooked for the Dursley’s], and then the first half the first class is a lesson about how you’ve got to earn the respect of your measuring spoons. Otherwise they’ll argue with you on how much has to go into a recipe.
Harry has a kind of tentative conversation with his and they work with him after he realized they were an older set used to students forcing them to work for them. Talks to them gently and asks if they think a little more or little less should go into a recipe, or if they think he should add an ingredient now and then because they’ve made the same thing over, and over.
Harry trying to make Molly a sweater in return for the one he got because he doesn’t know what to do with having gotten gifts, and only really managing a rather lengthy and oddly tensioned scarf made from the best yarn he could find out of a catalog he found on the shelf in the classroom. The professor was just delighted he’d decided to keep at knitting and crocheting [he may have… mixed the two] after they’d finished the unit, to make a gift.

Where’s Hermione having a long drawn out conversation with the home ec professor about how it’s ridiculous to devote magic to knitting when you can do it by hand, and the professor countering about the time saved by simply using enchanted needles or a charm. The conversation takes up the entire period but a teacher actually takes Hermione seriously for once because effective division of effort/time is a very important skill to learn and it’s what they’re there to teach.
Wheres Ron answering all the questions like a fucking CHAMP because managing in his family has basically made his ass a pro at everything– budgeting a vault? On it. Spelling how many cauldrons to feed how many people with how much food? On lock like it’s fucking Azkaban. Best herbs and plants to grow for general– he has already finished the worksheet/in-class essay that was on the board and is fucking around with his quill. He gets called on, his string bean ass gonna have the answer while kinda being shocked at himself that he actually does, because– like many poor ass people– we manage resources really damn well when we know what we have. And we very rarely let it get away from us.

Where’s the rich-ass purebloods that know finances and shit because they’re taking over family blood-line affairs when their older and their parents drilled that into their heads, but can’t cook/sew/anything else to save their life till they learn.
Where was Oliver Wood trying to make Healthy Food Things for the quidditch team for Extra Energy and just making a mess.
The Twins making a totally harmless banana pudding and selling it in their store and NO ONE KNOWING WHAT IT DOES, everyone panicking because they’re SURE they did something.

We were robbed of so much is all i’m saying.

What is something the average American, with no legal or social clout, can do to help with campaigning against mass incarceration rates, and campaigning for prisoner rights?

Although it’s easy to feel like individually we might not have much clout or that one person’s opinion won’t make much difference, when ordinary people unite around a particular issue, it becomes the most powerful force in the world.  The key is to organize – when you organize people and organize resources, you get power.  It’s what has propelled major policy changes like banning the criminal history question on job and college applications, limiting the use of solitary confinement, and recent commitments to close Rikers Island.  If you are someone with no direct experience with the criminal justice system, the best thing you can do is identify groups and campaigns near you that are led by or centering people who have been locked up themselves (and their families).  Those closest to the problem are usually closest to the solution, but furthest from resources and power.  Follow their lead and join them in marching, advocating, and meeting with public officials.  Invest in them financially if you are able – while social movements often appear organic and spontaneous, it costs money to organize them.  Finally, don’t underestimate the power of social media.  While action in the streets and the offices of public officials is still the most effective way to generate change, there are plenty of ways to support those activities from a distance by participating in social media campaigns.

During a mind-blowing orgasm, you have an intense moment of clarity and in your minds eye, see an equation that calculates someone’s EXACT lifespan, like down to the very second. In an extremely overpopulated world, this equation could stop the reapings, an event that culls groups of people to free up resources. Once the orgasm is over, you can’t see it anymore. Not an issue, right? Just have sex again. Except it isn’t that easy. The person that gave you this mind-blowing orgasm is your worst enemy, and your tryst had come as a result of hate and alcohol. Now, they refuse to help you.

I have a fat character I want to draw but she ends up looking weird no matter how hard I try... :< Do you know any tutorials on how to draw larger people?

I can totally understand your frustration. We’re taught to draw thin bodies a lot more often and thoroughly than we’re taught to draw fat ones, so learning how to draw larger bodies can definitely be a struggle, even for fat artists. But I’ve rustled up some links that should hopefully prove useful to you and other artists dealing with the same problem.

Fat Drawing Tutorial:

  • Here’s a pretty good one that covers different fat body variations and includes larger fat girls: “Tutorial - Curves on Girls
  • Once you get past the part about abs this one’s got some really good information and reference on how to draw how fat looks realistically: “Understanding Anatomy VII
(that whole tutorial series looks to be helpful on drawing anatomy, so I recommend checking the other parts out too)
  • This one doesn’t cover larger fats, but it does have some good stuff about distributions of fat on the body and variations on fatness: “Varying Your Body Types
  • Here’s a short, not-terribly-thorough one (that’s got some complaints in it on unrealistic depictions of fatness in fat-fetishistic art, just fyi), but which makes good points on incorporating gravity into depictions of fatness so the fat doesn’t look like balloons: “How To Draw Fat Women
  • This one’s a short tutorial (that has minor problematic language) about how to draw waists that’s inclusive of smaller fat bodies. “Female Waist Tutorial
  • A short tutorial about drawing hips, inclusive of smaller fat hips. Not a lot to it, but helpful to glance over. “Female Hip Tutorial
  • Drawing Fat on the Body is a video tutorial that covers some helpful advice on how to draw fat bodies building off of prior knowledge of drawing thin bodies. Doesn’t cover different types of fat bodies/fat distribution and has some other imperfections, but a decent beginner starting point. ” (contains some mild problematic language)
  • How to Draw Fat Bodies” Here’s a short post with some good general tips to keep in mind when attempting to draw fat people.
  • Another short, general guide on drawing fat bodies, with some good example of different fat body types. “Guide to Drawing Fat Bodies
  • A short guide with tips on drawing fat athletes/strong fat characters.
  • A basic tutorial on adding fat onto the general torso area of the body.

(One of the sadder parts of finding these was sifting through different tutorials and finding ones that were teaching how to draw really inaccurate or over-simplified fat anatomy, or included really fatphobic language or commentary in the tutorial =.=)

Fat Reference Photos:

  • This post links to a handful of helpful galleries of photo reference of fat women posing: “Re: Fat and Chubby Women Photo References
  • Here’s a Site which contains lots of pictures of different women searchable by height, age, weight, etc. that looks really helpful: “My Body Gallery.com
  • A site with a lot of great full-body pictures of people organized by their height and weight (referential to the bs BMI system, but still great art reference)Cockeyed: Height / Weight

Other Reference:

Otherwise, if you want to search for fat reference on tumblr, I’d suggest looking through tags and blogs that often contain selfies/photos of fat people, since when you’re trying to learn how fat actually looks, nothing is more accurate reference for it than the real thing.

HOWEVER, you must be respectful in your use of these tags or blogs for reference!!!! As in DO NOT draw people straight out of any photos you find and post your work unless you get permission from the subjects you’ve drawn and/or their photographers. If you do draw random people you see in the tag, then treat your drawings as practice/study and confine whatever you make to your sketchbook for your own eyes.

But I do wholly advocate looking at all sorts of images of fat people and really paying attention to all the different ways their fat manifests itself and looks, and then practicing drawing figures inspired by what you’ve observed.

(please note that some of these tags and blogs listed below may contain nudity/nsfw content:)

Tags containing fat selfies/photography: #fatshion, #fatspo, #fatspiration

Blogs containing fat selfies/photography: The Adipositivity ProjectFat Selfiesteem, Fat Grrrrl Selfies, Chubby Fatshion, Fuck Yeah Chubby Fashion, Chubby Bunnies, Chubby Guy Swag, Big Guy Flyy, Gorgeous Plus Lolita

Blogs containing art of fat or at least “not thin” people: Fat People Art, Fat Art

(If you see your blog linked to above and would rather it not be pointed to as a place to find reference of fat bodies, just let me know and I’ll take it off right away.)

Anyways, hope this helps! And if you know of, find, or make any more tutorials, references sources, etc., please do message me with the links to be added onto this post!!!  I’ll update this as I find/receive more stuff to add.

(Updated: 5/31/15 with 8 new additions to the fat drawing tutorial and fat reference photo sections)

controversial opinion

people who are straight and cis: your friends and relatives should not be forced to choose between giving you an entire 101-level education in gender and sexuality or forever suffering through your clueless remarks/questions that, trust me, are sometimes incredibly painful, however well-intentioned you are

and they definitely should not have to spend years laying this groundwork of educating you in order to feel safe coming out to you

do. your own. research.

Even if you think you don’t know anyone who isn’t straight and cis, I guarantee you that you are wrong, and you should educate yourself so you’re not an additional burden to them before or after they come out to you. It is unfair to expect them to personally tutor you out of your cluelessness, when they’re the marginalised person and you’re the one with nothing to lose.

You have Google. Use it. And actively seek out writers who are trans and gay and bi etc and read what they have to say. Don’t rely on whatever bits of mainstream or even feminist media drift your way. Your loved ones deserve better.

Love,

someone you know who has to brace every time this topic comes up because you literally do not know how offensive you’re being, I love you but oh my god, please stop

people seem to forget how resourceful and ingenious taako is and how he macgyvers the shit out of the materials at his disposition, half of the Taako Breaks Griffins Game moments have been because he made use of an unconventional spell or resource in an out of the box way
everybody talks about it as if lup and barry are the only scientists on board, but taako and lup went to the same academy and learned the same skills growing up - while lup might be more of a researcher and investigative scientist, taako is one hell of an engineer

Just once in a movie when the villain starts ranting about evolution through “survival of the fittest” I want someone who actually knows something about biology to call them on it.

“You know what? No. Just. Fucking. No. We are the top species on the planet for a reason and if it was strength then you wouldn’t be a furless lil squish with useless claws and teeth that can barely handle steak. For someone who can’t seem to shut up about how you alone know the great destiny of mankind you don’t know jackshit about how we got here. We cooperated, jackass. We evolved as together and we’re still evolving together. We worked together and supported each other, even the elderly and disabled who you’d deem meaningless. If anyone’s to blame for stagnating our evolution, it’s the people who disproportionately share resources and hold back the majority of our population over largely arbitrary differences…..you know, like you’re doing right now. You aren’t the next stage. You’re barely even the current stage. You’re a genetic throwback trying to drag us all with you and that light you’re guiding us towards is just the view out your mouth from how far you shoved your head up your own ass. Nature doesn’t give a crap about your ideals, just who survives. And we survive together.”

There is literally no reason for asexuals to Not be included in the LGBTQ+ community

Simply put, it just makes sense.

1: Ace people face very similar issues to many other LGBTQ+ folks (compulsory heterosexuality, corrective rape, abuse in relationships/at home/by friends bc of sexuality, heteronormativity, stigma, pathologisation etc). These are simply facts.

1.5: Also try asking yourself, why are you okay with calling bad treatment of overweight people “fatphobia” but not bad treatment of aroace people “aphobia”? It’s simply an easy to use term that is well established in the community. Also the argument that ace people don’t experience discrimination and oppression the same was other LGBTQ+ people do falls kind of flat, bc neither do lesbians in comparison to bisexual men, or nonbinary trans people in comparison to bisexual women. (Also please stop calling yourselves “aphobes”, make “i hate ace people” “””jokes”””, or compare us to mike pence and similar (yes ive seen this). I am, like many other aces, queer. it’s really insensitive, it’s rude, it makes me and many others feel awful and betrayed by our own community. Just, please stop).

2: Ace people don’t “steal” or take resources from other LGBTQ+ folks. If an ace person is homeless, then they do need shelter (like, if a gay person is homeless for a reason unrelated to their sexuality, for example chronical physical illness, then are they “stealing” LGBTQ+ resources? No. They’re not). And if an ace person is suicidal etc bc of their sexuality, then they do need that LGBTQ+ suicide hotline. If it is like you all say, that ace people don’t need these resources, then they won’t take them either. Simple as that.

3: And no, the full acronym isn’t necessarily LGBTQ. the acronym has changed A Lot throughout the years. from “gays and lesbian association” to what it is today, with a lot of acronyms and variants before that and on the journey till today. Accepting those in need and those similar to us is just how this community naturally evolves!

3.5: …And no, this doesn’t mean that pedophiles, zoophiles, and “kinky” people will be allowed into the community. Those aren’t sexual orientations and you know it. And they are not oppressed, discriminated against, or unfairly treated in society. This I have trouble expressing in English but I think you all get what I mean.

4: That argument generally is pretty USA centric. In many countries the current official acronym is in fact HBTQ (in popular media and newspaper), and HBTQ+ by official HBTQ+ organisations and other educated people! and many countries use different terminology entirely based on their language and history.

5: And no, there is no reason to exclude ace people bc “they’re our oppressors” bc guess what? Ace people are more often than not not straight (They are only straight if they choose to use the split attraction model, identify as either heteroromantic asexual or heterosexual aromantic, and identify as straight. You do not get to choose an ace person’s labels and erase their identity.), they don’t have hetero privilege (straight passing isn’t a privilege remember). also:

5.5: Cis people oppress trans people. White peoples oppress POC. Abled people oppress disabled people. And we share the community anyway, right? Sadly, it’s not a 100% safe space for all people. It’s too a diverse community for that. However, that doesn’t mean that we can exclude people based on that! Of course, ace people can’t speak over gay people on gay issues, the same way gay people can’t speak over trans people on trans issues.

6: Ace people are already accepted into the LGBTQ+ community by most people and organisations etc who know about aroace people. Both online and offline. We get taught about it in sex ED in school as such, official pride organisations include it in their commercials and information etc, and ace people are welcome and will in fact Not be hunted or targeted by other LGBTQ+ folks at pride! Generally speaking, this is tumblr phenomenon and something most regular pride goers don’t even know about.

Just making my stance on this matter clear on this subject bc recently I’ve seen a huge rise in discourse and nasty people saying terrible things, on both sides mind you, but yeah. My opinions, incomplete and defintely open to change. (And before you people go off a note, I’m ace, bi, and trans).

Black Marble: NASA View Illuminates Earth at Night

When the sun goes down, the lights on Earth shine bright. A new look using our satellite data captures the lights coming from our neighborhoods, vehicles, buildings, factories, fishing vessels and other human activity brightening the night.

Our scientists have just released the first new global map of Earth at night since 2012. This nighttime view of our home planet, dubbed the Black Marble, provides researchers with a unique perspective of human activities around the globe.

By studying Earth at night, researchers can investigate how and why cities expand, monitor light intensity to estimate energy use and economic activity, and aid in disaster response in near-real time.

The data on Earth at night comes from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument on the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership satellite, jointly managed by NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

VIIRS captures visible and infrared light, allowing researchers to glimpse the Earth as it looks to astronauts peering out of the International Space Station. The new map is a composite of data collected in 2016, and it took several months of processing to filter out clouds, moonlight, airglow, and other interfering features to create the global image. In the coming months our scientists will release daily nighttime lights data at even finer resolutions for the first time.

The East Coast sparkles with population hubs, suburbs circling cities and major roadways. The I-95 corridor includes the most densely populated region of the United States – the stretch from Washington, DC to Boston.

To get images like these from the satellite data, our scientists had to filter out moonlight, aerosols and other sources of extraneous light – the goal is to eventually be able to detect the lights from a single building or fishing boat.

Daytime satellite images, like this one from Landsat 8, can show us the forests, deserts, mountains, waterways and built-up cities. Add a nighttime view, and scientists can study when and how people are using these limited resources – like the lights tracing the Nile River leading to the metropolis of Cairo, Egypt.

Lights aren’t confined to land. With the global nighttime view, the ocean is dotted with fishing fleets, including boats that try to attract their catch with bright lights.

What lights illuminate your neighborhood? Download a high-resolution version of the Black Marble HERE, and find out more about our new night lights data HERE.

You know what’d be grand? if hospitals gave a rundown of what a visit would cost if the NHS wasn’t free. Oooh boy, suddenly all these Tory voting grannies that are living too long and draining the NHS would be out there with placards chanting ‘save our nhs’.
