So, Issue #10 of Black Widow is out and it was absolutely brilliant, in terms of writing, artistically and in terms of continuity. Really really an enjoyable read and a long time coming for those who’ve been comics readers for a long time,
Couple of things, though….
I’m seeing a lot of ‘Yay, canon!’, but it’s not suddenly canon–it’s been canon since about 2007 or 2008. Yes, they haven’t actively been together since about 2012, but that was because Natasha’s memories were erased, and after multiple attempts were made to restore her memory, Bucky made them stop trying, believing she was safer without him, and that to continue to try was invasive in a way that wasn’t right.
Thing is, he never stopped loving her, and she was aware that something wasn’t right, a circumstance that both writers of Winter Soldier comics and Black Widow comics have repeatedly made reference to, sometimes overtly and sometimes more subtlety. On an internal level, the relationship continued to exist, and Natasha has never been operating without backup, even when she thought she was.
Long story short, it didn’t become canon today, Natasha is just aware of the past canon to some degree (and maybe understands the existential sense of wrongness she experienced prior to the current run), is aware of his ongoing commitment, and clearly has developed feelings for him anew–while Bucky’s probably happier than he’s been in about 5 years, even if they still have a ways to go.
The other thing is…please don’t use this to rub people’s noses in it. Yeah, I get the desire, a lot of nasty stuff has been spewed, but take the high road. If someone is anti, or offended on behalf of their ‘ship, they’re not going to get any less anti, etc, after reading ‘nyah nyah’ posts, you’ll just look like the same kind of person as those who’ve been going out of their way to make BuckyNat/WinterWidow shippers unhappy or feel vicariously insulted, and will no doubt continue to do so. Don’t be like that, too. It’s not necessary.
you know what’s wild? getting comments on fic that’s 10 years old. what’s even wilder? they felt it necessary to point out a minor continuity issue (first it was ten o’clock then it was eleven thirty) and to smugly ask why the police didn’t just break down the character’s door if there was a warrant for his arrest (well, that’s illegal, so. there’s one reason.)
i probably sound super salty about this, but mostly i’m just kind of like holy crap it’s amazing that there is someone out there reading my fics from ten years ago like i wrote them yesterday and offering crit??? that’s so crazy
