“It was not a decision that was my own. My family needed money to survive, so it was natural for me to support my family in any way possible. I was only 13 years old when I started diving but had no fear whatsoever at the beginning. When you don’t have a choice, there’s no time to worry about being afraid of something.”

(2 of 2) This is Ms. Kang. She is 75 years young and still makes a living as a haenyeo, Jeju Island’s famed female divers who forage the ocean depths for edible seafood - all without the aid of any breathing apparatus. Remarkably, some haenyeo are able to stay underwater for up to three minutes at a time at depths of 20 meters. They gather everything from various shellfish to octopus to even large fish, oftentimes spending up to eight hours in the perilous ocean. Ms. Kang has been diving for over 60 years, starting at the tender age of 13 to support her family.

“내가 스스로 결정한게 아냐. 우리 가족 생계를 위해서 돈이 필요했고 나는 어떻게 해서든 가족을 먹여살려야 했지. 처음 물질 했던게 13살 때였어. 그땐 겁도 없이 시작했지. 선택의 여지가 없을땐 뭘 두려워 하거나 걱정할 시간도 없어. 그냥 하는거지.”

I’ve been so angry today.

A 23-year-old woman was recently murdered in Gangnam. The man who did it has been quoted as saying that he did it because “women have belittled” him in the past. At Gangnam Station people have been leaving post-it’s in tribute to the woman who was killed and in solidarity against misogyny.

Someone recently started a small memorial at the City Hall bus stop here in Jeju-si. Last night I walked by it with some friends, the wall was covered in colorful notes — some even in English. Flowers were taped up as well, and there was a box of post-it’s for people to continue contributing. I thought it was really empowering. Jeju can feel a little disconnected from the mainland at times, so it was great to see this.

This morning on my walk to work I wanted to stop by and leave my own note. Jeju is known for it’s wind, so at first I thought that a few notes had been blown off during the night… but wind can’t exactly scrawl a large ‘X’ across the entire memorial.

Sometime last night after 11, someone chose to deliberately destroy this memorial. A young woman was brutally murdered; stabbed by a man she had never met, for no reason… and someone feels petty enough to rip down post-it’s and flowers because they don’t like that people are talking about misogyny?

It’s gross. I’m so disgusted at people right now.

“Not many people realize that being a haenyeo is not something to be proud of. We risk our lives every time we venture out into the ocean in order to support our families. In other words, we do this type of dangerous work and sacrifice our bodies so our kids don’t have to.”

“해녀로 사는건 별로 자랑이 아닌데 많은 사람들은 그걸 몰라. 우린 그저 매일 목숨을 내 놓고 가족들 먹여 살리려고 바다에 뛰어드는 건데… 내 자식들은 이렇게 살지 않게 하려고 내 몸뚱아리 희생하면서 이 일을 하는거라고”

She is 77 years young and still makes a living as a haenyeo, Jeju Island’s famed female divers who forage the ocean depths for edible seafood - all without the aid of any breathing apparatus. Remarkably, some haenyeo are able to stay underwater for up to three minutes at a time at depths of 20 meters. They gather everything from various shellfish to octopus to even large fish, oftentimes spending up to eight hours in the perilous ocean. Ms. Goh has been diving for over 50 years, and according to her, she plans to keep diving until death.
