Expect One Direction star Liam Payne to announce a solo deal with Capitol U.K.’s Nick Raphael and Jo Charrington—the first 1D solo signing outside the Sony system. While many observers expected Sony to stay in this one, Universal prevailed.

The question of which U.S. label Liam will be on within the UMG system remains to be decided by the artist, but Raphael and team have helped steer such key U.K. signings as Sam Smith and 5 Seconds of Summer to Steve Barnett’s Capitol mothership, with much success. All this of course occurs in the wake of Columbia’s splashy deal for 1D heartthrob Harry Styles, not to mention the chart success of first-out-of-the-gate member and RCA solo artist ZAYN, whose lead single, “PILLOWTALK,” has racked up 1.3m+ in sales.

One Direction earned $125m in 2015 alone, the majority coming from their 74-date world tour, which earned seven-figure grosses at each stop. Albums Up All Night (2011) and Take Me Home (2012) have sold 2m+ RTD, while 2013’s Midnight Memories moved 1.5m+ and Four (2014) sold more than 1m.  Singles “What Makes You Beautiful” (2011, 4.9m) and “Story of My Life’ (2013, 2.9m) are their top-selling tracks. The lads initially announced their hiatus in August, three months before they released, Made in the A.M., the last album under their SYCO/Columbia deal, which has sold 860k RTD.

Your move, Louis and Niall.

Sick Husband Reacts to Zayn: Pillowtalk

I’ll start off by clarifying that Hubs calls this the “parrot died” song, because the first time he heard it, he thought the lyrics were “parrot died” instead of “paradise.” Also he was sick and high on Nyquil.

He also took it upon himself to re-write the lyrics to the song, which I have also included.

“He should shave.”

“I feel like this is taking place on the Death Star. Similar lights. Fewer Stormtroopers. Less fun.”

“Oh. A vagina flower. Got it. That’s totally normal.”

  • Husband: why are centurions fighting?
  • Me: What’s a centurion?
  • Husband: I dunno, its like, a half horse, half human.
  • Me: Centaur.
  • Husband: Ok nevermind. Its someone who has lived over 100 years.
  • Me: Centenarian.
  • Husband: Okay fine whatever, but those are Centurions.

(For anybody who is wondering, this is an actual Centurion.)

  • Husband: What does the lady with the paperclip face have to do with any of this?
  • Me: I dunno! She’s getting ready for war, maybe?
  • Husband: What war is she fighting? The war of…keeping papers together?

“Obviously a very drug-inspired video.”

“Ahhh! Aliens!”

“He’s turning into White Tips!”

“Does he even care about having sex with Gigi Hadid? He’s so unenthusiastic about it!”

“He’s so unenthusiastic. He’s singing about sex but he might as well be singing about something boring like setting the table.” (His new and improved version of this song, inspired by this comment, can be found at the end of the post.)

“Oh she is definitely angry. Her paperclips flew out of her face. Is she their neighbor? Is that why she’s pissed?”

Final Thoughts?

“There was no sex appeal to it, it was so boring! Also, I noticed that he doesn’t open his mouth when he sings. That’s probably why I can’t understand half of what he says.”

Husband’s New and Improved Song: Dinner Talk

(starts at “so we’ll piss off the neighbors”)

So we can set the table

Put the forks on the left, the knives on the right, yeah

Make sure it looks fancy

With a special knife for butter, make sure it stays clean

fork for salad, fork for meat

tables set, tables set

dinner date, dinner date

it’s a paring knife, and it’s a sorbet

I think he might have a future in songwriting.

See my other husband reacts posts here.

Hits Daily Double has included Zayn in their Grammy nomination speculations for two categories, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year.

Record of the Year:

James Bay’s “Let It Go” and ZAYN’s “PILLOWTALK” are high on the list of alternates. Bay received three nominations last year, including Best New Artist and Best Rock Album. In fact, he performed “Let It Go” on the Grammys in February. The striking “Pillowtalk,” Zayn’s first single after leaving One Direction, was a global #1 smash.

Song of the Year:

Other candidates include “Formation” (which Beyoncé co-wrote with Khalif Brown, Jordan Frost, Asheton Hogan and Michael Len Williams II), “Stressed Out” (written by Tyler Joseph), “PILLOWTALK” (which ZAYN co-wrote with Levi Lennox, Anthony Hannides, Michael Hannides and Joe Garrett)

In the fall of 2015, after announcing that he will be leaving the world-renowned boy band One Direction to focus on his solo career and to live a more ‘private’ life, Zayn Malik got the exact opposite. When I first heard that Zayn was leaving One Direction. I didn’t give it two cares in the world. For me, One Direction wasn’t my first choice in music. However, for the millions of 13-year-olds that worship the boy band, the news may have been distressing.

Once departed from the band, Malik released his first single in January of this year titled, “Pillowtalk” which immediately shot to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. The success of this single was not only a shock to millions of fans, but also to bystanders like myself. From the start, I knew I had to purchase this song. It was catchy, simple, yet meaningful and absolutely amazing.

With the worldwide success of the first single, the yearning, wanting and desire for more music from Zayn Malik was at an all-time high. That craving was finally satisfied on a day in March when Malik’s album entitled “Mind of Mine” dropped.

The album took a second to grow on me for a few reasons. I was expecting some spin off One D-type music, but Pillowtalk blew me out the water. While my mind was blown and my hunger for more new music was surprisingly high, I was not ready for this type of album from a One Direction alumni. This album is listed under pop, but like most new albums, you cannot limit it to one genre. “Mind of Mine” is pop, infused with trap elements, along with some R&B vocals and a little T-Swift sounding profound lyrical content. It took me a while to adjust to this type of art from Zayn, but once I removed my box that I placed on the singer in, I realized how amazing this album really is.

As I was listening to “Mind of Mine” I found myself replaying some songs before I even made it through the entire album. The catchy lyrics, melodies and experimental sounds is what hooked me. One of my top favorites on the album happens to be “Rear view,” which gave me that summer vibe, riding down to Seward, Alaska while getting that unequal drivers arm tan from the sun. The song seems to talk about being torn — you want to love someone. but can’t. The cadence in which Zayn was singing the chorus is what made me fall in love with this song at first listen.

Being the only male to ever debut a solo album and land at #1 on the Billboard Hot 200 charts most likely voids Malik’s claim to want to live a more private life. This album alone solidified Zayn and placed him amongst the pop greats of today, which makes sense for someone coming from such a successful band. It makes me wonder if he really was trying to live a more private life or was this a come-up scheme. Either way, I am enjoying this piece of work.

zayn out here living his life and chillin’, making music and videos at his own pace and enjoying his new found freedom, and he still has been given more opportunity than he was ever given while he was with 1D, and ya’ll still wanna sit here and say that he’s ruining his career, and that he’s being lazy and ‘stunting’ with his girlfriend. bitch nah…he out there enjoying his life with his GIRLFRIEND (yes, i know it’s still hard for some of you to grasp reality that two young famous people can date and have a genuine relationship. SHOCKER, i know. ) and he has one of his songs on a major motion picture soundtrack, he has an album that’s doing very well for his first solo album. pillowtalk is still doing phenomenal. he’s such a fashion icon that every designer wants to work with him, or have him wear their clothes. like…WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT FROM HIM?!
