Lay your sleeping head, my love, Human on my faithless arm; Time and fevers burn away Individual beauty from Thoughtful children, and the grave Proves the child ephemeral: But in my arms till break of day Let the living creature lie, Mortal, guilty, but to me The entirely beautiful.
Soul and body have no bounds: To lovers as they lie upon Her tolerant enchanted slope In their ordinary swoon, Grave the vision Venus sends Of supernatural sympathy, Universal love and hope; While an abstract insight wakes Among the glaciers and the rocks The hermit’s carnal ecstasy.
Certainty, fidelity On the stroke of midnight pass Like vibrations of a bell, And fashionable madmen raise Their pedantic boring cry: Every farthing of the cost, All the dreadful cards foretell, Shall be paid, but from this night Not a whisper, not a thought, Not a kiss nor look be lost.
Beauty, midnight, vision dies: Let the winds of dawn that blow Softly round your dreaming head Such a day of welcome show Eye and knocking heart may bless. Find the mortal world enough; Noons of dryness see you fed By the involuntary powers, Nights of insult let you pass Watched by every human love.
–W. H. Auden. “Lay your sleeping head, my love” (also called “Lullaby”) 1937
Why was Megan so hostile to don during their divorce? And I feel like as the show goes on Henry just thinks of Betty as a trophy wife, do you think he always did and never really said anything until the latter seasons?
Megan was hostile because she finally let the floodgates open. For the entire duration of their relationship, Don undermined her career, tried to push her into a maternal role she didn’t want, ignored her whenever he was angry or drunk or experiencing any personal trouble, lied to her, and found ways to impede her achieving her goals. For years, Megan tried to suppress any anger or resentment she felt toward Don by being a font of sunny positivity. Eventually she couldn’t be that optimistic, bright person anymore. Don robbed her of that.
When she worked at SCDP, he pulled her out of work, pushed her around, and undercut her creative progress. When she started acting, he insulted her line of work, took zero interest in her show, and slut-shamed her for having an on-screen kiss. Once she started pursuing her passions, he withdrew from her completely and started having a highly transparent affair. It’s clear from several of Megan’s comments that she knew Don was cheating all along.
Then, the cherry on top, Don dangles California and a “new start” in front of Megan, forcing her to quit her job, only to withdraw the possibility of reconciliation and reunion at the drop of a hat, without consulting her. Her literally persuades her to quit her job and move out to California, then changes his mind on moving because Ted Chaugh is sad. Megan moves out to California to pursue new work, unaccompanied by Don, and lives a lonely, unsuccessful, isolated life while he drinks at home, hides his unemployment from her, and screws other women.
She fails to find work. She makes a few desperate bids for his attention. She gets a reminder (in the form of a pregnant Stephanie on her doorstep) that Don is still basically inscrutable to her. Finally, she carves out her own life, piece by piece, right under Don’s nose, and when she tells him she wants a divorce, he doesn’t even care. By the end of the series, Megan has lost most of her acting prospects, her friends, her New York life, and feels betrayed, deceived, and bereft. She’s also become a bitter, brittle, sniping smoker, not unlike early-seasons Betty. No wonder she’s pissed at Don. He did all of that to her.
As for Henry’s seemingly inconsistent treatment of Betty, I don’t think his trophy-wife expectations are out of character at all. Henry’s first gift to Betty was a fainting couch. He fell in love with her when he first met her, pregnant and covered in white lace. His first move is to put his hand on her stomach. Henry always saw Betty as a fragile, delicate woman. Betty initially saw him as her white knight, and her escape route from an abusive and unfulfilling marriage to Don. It’s no surprise at all to me that once Betty started showing her more assertive side Henry balked.
The Bones of Icarus
your ribs are the colours of dust and small bones among rose thorns
your veins run with mercury and liquid gold
you breathe in your doom and breathe out a smile
your nails are poison-tipped knives as you drag them through your hair
your hands dig up sordid graves
ten thousand buried bodies beyond beasts and men
alien and grotesque growths that are the earth itself in splendid, awful poignancy
your eyes are stars tears precious stones cheeks of quartz as your fae feet fall backward upon roots of elder tree
the tree watches, his old eyes have seen you for a century and will watch for centuries to come
brass wings unfurl from your spine and your freedom becomes your cave
you hide your face from the sun
for fear of what she may do
you are a child, a figment, you are delicate bones and copper skin stretched thin over imagined cartilage
your name, your name has been tasted for millennia on the tongues of scholars and madmen and naive youths
you are a martyr
you are an angel on wings of ingenuity and death, death too quick, young death, senseless pointless unheroic death
you are the father
you are the son
the Griever and the the Grieved
your nude skin is bleached to barren bone
bone; at the bottom of oceans and on the snow borne tongues of mountains far flung and fanciful
you are decaying amongst wild flowers and rose thorns
your wings have melted
your eyes eaten away
you are all but gone, son
all that remains are your bones
and your wings
wings of music
songs of lost hope
what is your name?
it’s melts from you mind while your hopes turns to venomous rot
you reached for the sun
you reached for the inferno
and you burnt
and your bones fell from skies unholy and scarred
and your bones
“Is there a reason everyone is running around this city like madmen? I knew when I decided to stay in New Orleans, I was signing up for a shit show, but this is nuts even for this city.” Hayley said as she tilted her head as she surveyed those swarming the streets.
“You know, given that bracelets don’t fall off when people die and Monokuma isn’t doing announcements of deaths, I imagine that there’s going to be a fake-out with a death at some point. I kind of hope it’s with Aoi, but I doubt that’ll be the case. They’ll probably have the real villain fake death like in that one Agatha Christie novel.” - Me, Last Week

I’m glad she’s alive, but now I’m not sure if my theory is right.
