February 16th 1909: Richard McDonald born

On this day in 1909, the co-founder of the McDonald’s fast food chain was born in Manchester, New Hampshire. Richard and his brother Maurice established the first McDonald’s in 1948 in California, and the restaurant became a franchise in 1953. The iconic Golden Arches were included in the restaurant designs at the suggestion of Richard McDonald. The brothers did not want to expand the chain too much, and only desired a small number of restaurants. Others, however, had bigger dreams for McDonald’s. In 1961, Ray Kroc bought the company from the brothers for $2.7 million and transformed the restaurant chain into a corporation. The business expanded from there, and in 1984 Richard was served the ceremonial 50 billionth McDonald’s hamburger. What began as a humble burger joint in the 1940s is now a corporate behemoth with a presence in 119 countries around the world. With around 68 million customers per day, McDonald’s draws huge profits - in 2012 its annual revenues were $27.5 billion. Maurice McDonald died in 1971 aged 69, and his brother Richard died in 1998 aged 89. The brothers began with a dream of becoming millionaires; they most certainly achieved this.

Researchers are giving us new insight into the problem of food allergies and intolerances. A new study out of Brigham and Women’s Hospital finds 3.6 percent of Americans are dealing with those problems.

The study, published in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, looked at the electronic health records of 2.7 million people and identified 97,482 with one or more food allergies or intolerances.

Researchers defined allergies and intolerances as anything resulting in an adverse reaction to a food, including hives, anaphylaxis or shortness of breath.

Women and girls were found to be more likely to suffer from the problem — 4.2 percent compared to 2.9 percent among males. And people of Asian descent were the likeliest subgroup to be affected at a rate of 4.3 percent.

Hamilton passes Rent and Lin does a Q&A

The original Broadway cast recording notches its 100th consecutive week on the list, and also surpasses the total album sales of the original Broadway cast album to Rent.

In the latest tracking week (ending Aug. 24), Hamilton sold another 7,000 copies, bringing its total sales to 1.285 million – slightly more than the 1.284 million of Rent(released in 1996).

Hamilton is now the sixth largest selling cast album of the Nielsen Music era (which started in 1991, when the company began electronically tracking music sales).

The top selling cast album in Nielsen Music’s history is the highlights edition of the original London cast recording of The Phantom of the Opera, with 4.97 million sold. (The complete recording of The Phantom of the Opera — which is tracked and charts separately — has sold 503,000 since 1991.)

The Phantom of the Opera (Highlights) is followed by the original Broadway cast recording of Wicked (2.7 million), the original cast recording of Mamma Mia! (1.72 million), the original Broadway cast recording of Les Miserables (1.66 million), the original Broadway cast recording of Jersey Boys (1.44 million) and Hamilton.

Further, Hamilton has sold 297,000 in 2017. It is one of only two cast albums to sell 100,000 copies this year; Dear Evan Hansen, at 116,000, is the other. Those totals also make 2017 the first calendar year since 2011 where two cast albums have cleared 100,000. That year, The Book of Mormon and Wicked respectively sold 182,000 and 133,000.

rebuttals to bighit  defenders and jin antis

This so-called “borderline emotional abuse” of calling someone fat is very common in Korea and East Asia as a whole.

Doesn’t mean it still hurts to be called fat. Especially when the standard is to look slim.

This whole business about lines needs to fucking stop. Do you see One Republic fans making a big deal out of “line distribution” because Ryan gets all the “lines”? In fact, I don’t think their fans could give a flying fuck as to how many seconds or how much screen time each member gets on their own instrument.

Um sorry this is one of the worst arguments I’ve seen in my life. 1) The KPop industry and the American music industry are completely different in terms of management and artists (auditioning to be put in a group vs starting off on YouTube) and 2) OneRepublic is a band, BTS is a boyband for lack of better words. You can’t compare the two. Ryan is the lead singer because everyone else has there roles. Jin is a vocalist and visual but he barely gets lines or screen time. You can’t compare the two.

What is line distribution when it comes to how a song sounds? Is Jin really good enough of a dancer to be at the front? Over Jimin, who majored in dance, and Hoseok, who toughed it out in the underground? Jungkook, who can self-teach himself Chris Martin choreographies? Fans might want Jin to get more lines or more dance parts or more screentime or more attention or more respect but this “A+ for effort” “medal of participation” is not going to work if BTS wants to keep going higher.

Please tell me there are two arguments in this. A song sounds different because of line distribution. Have you ever heard the studio version of “Spring Day” compared to the live version where Hobi actually had lines and Jin had more? And how much happier ARMYs were? I didn’t see fans complain about giving Hobi and Jin more lines, so why can’t we get this all the time? Plus Jin is a “good enough dancer.” He’s not the best like Dance Line, but he keeps up with them, and depending on the choreography, he can be really good. I don’t see you trying to learn the choreography plus sing and remember transitions and positions at the same time.

Jin has the most popular VLives

y I K E S fam, you need to go fact check. Jin once wanted to completely cancel EatJin because no one was watching. And um, if you actually look on VLive, Jungkook bY FAR has the most popular VLives and HE’S HAD TWO. One is at 3 million and the other is at 2.7 million.

We have sent nearly abusive hate to BigHit over Seokjin.

Yeah, but here’s the thing: BigHit is a company, an object, while Jin is a human being with feelings. So what if we sent BigHit nearly abusive hate to Seokjin? As a company needing to sell to people, they respond to what consumers want. And as of right now, ARMYs want more of Jin–which makes perfect sense to send in our complaints. ARMYs want more Jin because they want him to have more love–doing our jobs as ARMYs to love him. Plus it’s not like all fans are respectful anyways, so of course there are some “abusive hate.” Or just the fact that Jin and OT7 stans are sick and tired of seeing Jin robbed of his main roles in BTS: vocalist and visual. It seems like he’s the special backup at this point. Copied from my reply to this post)

Logically saying, BigHit will distribute BTS’ lines according to, first, how many people will be pleased if this person receives these lines; and second, the ability of the member in singing/rapping/expressing that line.

If this is the case, Namjoon should have waaaaaay less lines than he does because he’s always voted as the last favorite member. Don’t believe me? Just look at the amount of fancams and views Namjoon has on his focus videos, vlives, lyric videos, and music videos. They’re always less by hundreds of thousands. And Tae should have waaaaaaay more lines because he’s really really popular with the younger audience, even rivaling with Jungkook (that Billboard poll where Tae beat JK by 6%) So whatever BigHit is doing, it’s wrong anyways. Plus they’re all singers/rappers? They’ve trained for a couple of years and actually debuted? They’re artists? And as artists, changing style to improve is a must, meaning all of them has the ability to sing anything given to them. “Even if it doesn’t fit their voice.” Because look, Jin’s voice is better for ballads right? And it really is, listening to “Arirang” and “Awake.” But where are his lines in “Butterfly”? And Jin absolytely slayed “Come Back Home” when that song “doesn’t fit his voice.”

bighit WILL distribute lines and mv solos according to a member’s popularity. we cannot expect the company to just hand out equal parts to the members because that’s not how their system works

We have to expect the company to change. Isn’t BTS about fighting for the oppressed? Their whole existence strives on trying to change things for the better. Do you not listen to their songs? They’re always like “fuck the system, I’ll do it my way.” And as an ARMY, we’re here to change how BigHit treats Jin. Especially because he’s someone dear to us. Honestly, what kind of ARMY are you if you’re not defending each and every one of them.

He’s the visual.

pUHLEEZE We know he’s the visual. So where is his screentime in “Not Today”? If he’s the visual shouldn’t he also be in the middle of the official lineup and appear a little more often center stage when dancing? He’s also a vocalist I hope you’re not forgetting. He’s not just the visual.

stay in your lane

It’s hard to find a suitable amount of lines for 7 members.

Well rap line is even enough, right? And um, Jungkook usually has 1 minute to a 4 minute song while Jin has 10 seconds (and Tae all the growling parts). I don’t think it’s that hard to do the math there. Heck, switch Jin and Jimin for the high notes so us Jin/OT7 stans and sleep better at night.

He has the worst vocal technique in the group.

Well that’s debatable to a certain degree because at the end of the day, Jin is still a singer, he debuted with everyone else, and probably can sing better than you. Plus giving Kookie/Jimin more lines isn’t helping them either. It causes them to work harder to preserve their voice while performing and just adds more pressure to them.

Don’t blame other members.

We’re not. Maybe a little bit because they could at least speak up (because what would BigHit be without BTS), but a true ARMY loves all of them to pieces but still acknowledging that they’re still human and can make mistakes as well as decisions. We’re just bringing them into the conversation to compare because it really isn’t fair to Jin to get the least amount of everything. It just strengthens are argument for Jin to receive more love and if it ever gets fixed, we’ll just go back to loving the members all the same.

BigHit is an angel compared to other companies.

yes BigHit is an angel compared to other companies, but it’s not helping your argument. Maybe if SM is treating their groups bad, using BigHit is a wonderful example to convince to SM that they need to change. But this is Jin we’re talking about, a human being chasing after his dreams, not a company. I think that says enough, right?

Rather than complaining, we should be happy that BTS is doing this for us. All the members deserve the same love.

hmmm I don’t see you defending that Jin (and Namjoon and Hobi) needs more love or that you’re giving it to them. Plus what kind of ARMY are we if we’re not happy that they’re doing it for us.

BTS distributes the lines

yeah um, that’s a lie and you know it. These boys love each other to pieces and constantly hype each other up, do you really think they’d only give Jin two lines each song?

Honestly, just let us protect our boys and give them what they deserve rather than denying straight fact. (Let’s trend #GiveJinMoreLines2k17 okay? :D)

Taipei, home to 2.7 million people and the capital of Taiwan, has a rather large bicycle secret hidden among the tight streets and winding alleyways. It can be best described as an unbelievable, jaw dropping treasure trove. The private collection of Asahi Chang contains more than 600 professional track and road bikes. It is the largest of it’s kind in the world, unavailable for public viewing. The location is a very well kept secret. We were lucky enough to have a peek inside the collection that has been nick named, “单车书房” - Bicycle Heaven.

raaberg  asked:

What do you guys see as the driving factors/elements behind mass incarceration? Both for the present but also in the past. And also, pros and cons of the prison industrial complex?

The story we’ve been told is that mass incarceration decreases crime. If that were true, less crime should mean fewer people to arrest. But the opposite is true. Crime has plummeted over the last 2 decades, but mass incarceration has exploded anyway. Over 11 million people cycle through jails every year and 2.2 million people are currently incarcerated.

The true drivers of incarceration - profit, racism, and politicized fear-mongering which lead to aggressive sentencing policies that influence police, judges, and prosecutors - shape a disturbing narrative about our country’s incarceration obsession. Both the public and private prison systems are big business for investors and corporations, and has historical roots in slavery and the social control of the poor (read Alexander’s “The New Jim Crow” or watch “13th” for more analysis). The war on drugs, racial profiling, an inability to make bail, and many other factors have resulted in African Americans being incarcerated at a rate more than 5 times that of White Americans.

The consequences of mass incarceration are severe, multi-generational, and self-perpetuating for entire communities. Justice-involvement decreases lifetime earnings by about 40%, and drives people to break the law to address their economic needs. For the 2.7 million children with incarcerated parents, not only are their core needs for stability being neglected, but they are also at increased risk for future justice system involvement.

Our system is utterly broken.

for mob au: both? like ultra-modern eurasian city-state with 30's fashion and slick lines (also ps i love u)

This could work…Hopefully it wouldn’t be, like, conceptual whiplash though |D

I like that idea tho. Like everyone wears hats and holds the doors open for each other and Viktor Nikiforov wears suits that make Yuuri physically ache also he’s in a golfing outfit at one point because??? I have needs, but also Viktor Nikiforov’s 2.7 million dollar penthouse condo has an AI that calls him Mr. Nikiforov and when Yuuri looks out at the city from the bedroom balcony he talks about the light pollution shields around the city that allow the stars to be visible, and at some point Viktor tries to convince Yuuri that he should have his eyes corrected (”They do it on infants nowadays, Yuuri”) and Yuuri keeps refusing because there’s the chance, just the smallest chance, that something could go wrong.

“Is it the glasses?” Yuuri asks, thumbing them further up on his face. “Do they make me look ugly? People in school used to call me four-eyes.”

Viktor is actually a very big fan of the glasses. He’s just worried that someday, somebody is going to knock Yuuri’s glasses off his face and he’ll be completely helpless because of it.

(Viktor’s never had poor eyesight. He doesn’t understand that if your glasses fall off, it’s shit on your depth perception but you can still see someone coming at you with a baseball bat, Jesus Viktor)

Saturday Morning [Part 2] (Grayson)

Written by: @keepcalmandlovepotter

Summary: Alyssa is new to L.A. and has a few secrets she’s rather keep to herself. When a famous YouTube star meets her, it changes the course of her life forever.

A/N: This was a submission and this is NOT MY STORY

As soon as I got home, I could no longer suppress the urge to look Grayson up on Google. I didn’t even have to type in his last name. Google immediately suggested ‘Grayson and Ethan Dolan’. I was hesitant. Was this an invasion of privacy? Was it weird because I met him without immediately knowing who he was? Did he like that? Did he hate that? Would he be weirded out if he found out I Googled him?

My head felt like the inside of a blender as I pressed ‘Enter’ and looked at the search results. There were hundreds upon thousands of pictures of him with an identical looking boy next to him who I assumed was his brother. I scrolled through Google and contemplated clicking on one of their videos when his Twitter account caught my eye. I clicked and my mouth fell open.

“2.7 MILLION FOLLOWERS?!” I practically shouted from thes small bedroom in my apartment. I ran a hand through my hair and put my elbow on my desk, resting my chin in my hand and sighed loudly. I scrolled through the comments and retweets and his own tweets to see what I was dealing with.

It was rare he got less than 35,000 likes on each tweet, with thousands of replies and retweets on each one. He talked about loving his fans, truly and genuinely, how they were everything to him. I closed my laptop and put my head on the desk, closing my eyes and mentally slapping myself for even bothering to look him up. It only made the situation worse.

Okay, so let’s assess: he’s pretty famous, girls love him, he’s breathtakingly beautiful, AND the sweetest guy you’ve met in L.A. Of course.

This was just my luck. I meet a guy who takes my breath away and it turns out he’s unattainable. I rolled my eyes and picked up a book from my desk, going to sit on my bed. I pulled my calculus notebook from a drawer and started working on some problems, as I did every day to keep my mind sharp, but I couldn’t stop thinking about Grayson and all his fans and what I should do about it. I must’ve been working for about an hour when my phone buzzed.

An unrecognized number flashed on my screen and I picked up my phone.

Hey. It’s Grayson. Wanted to make sure you had my number. I had a blast today! Can’t wait to trip over you again 😜

I felt my heart race and I thought for a moment before replying.

I had fun too. Hopefully next time there will be no tripping!

I put my phone down, expecting that to be the end of the exchange, but was surprised when it buzzed for a second time.

What’re you doing tomorrow?
I have to work in the morning, but I’m free after like, 1. Why?

I put the phone down, but stared at it intently, holding my breath. The pause between this text and his first text was substantially different. There was a long wait before I got a response, but he did respond.

Would you be totally opposed to me taking you to dinner?

I let out the most girlish, unabashedly gleeful giggle I’d ever giggled in my entire life, along with the breath that I had been holding. I had to remind myself to take a deep breath to get enough oxygen to my brain before I responded, so as to make sure I didn’t say anything ENTIRELY stupid. I wrote out three different responses, deleting them all before finally settling on something not entirely stupid.

Not TOTALLY opposed, no. In fact, I think I’d be totally up for it. 😊

Oh, god, that was fuckin’ lame…

Awesome! I’ll pick you up at 7. I can’t wait

Me neither! See you then

I closed out the messenger app on my phone and looked up to stare at the wall for a minute. I had to say it out loud to confirm that it was true and I wasn’t losing my mind.

“A famous YouTuber…tripped over me in a bookstore…and is taking me on a date tomorrow…” I said, slowly, as if putting together puzzle pieces. I rolled my eyes and flopped back down onto my bed, my head hitting the pillows with a thwack.

So, you’re going on a date with him? Does that mean you’ve decided to go after him? Or let him go after you?

I struggled with the repercussions of going on a date with Grayson for hours, going back and forth with myself. I didn’t want to have a target on my back yet again. His fans would surely be upset if they knew he was seeing someone. I looked up Grayson’s twitter on my own and clicked over to his brother’s page. There were several dozen pictures of him with a beautiful young woman with song lyrics as comments and lots of heart-eyed emojis. His fans seemed to be pretty supportive of their relationship. Her name was Emily.

I got up to make myself some dinner and continued thinking about the whole thing, scrolling through their social media pages. I watched a few of their videos while I cooked. They WERE funny, and I laughed out loud at a few of them. They were goofy and silly. They reminded me a little of my sister’s husband Kyle. As soon as that thought crossed my mind, my phone rang and his name lit up the screen. I smiled and answered.

“SPEAK OF THE DEVIL! Were your ears burning?!” I said with a laugh. My brother-in-law laughed and put the phone on speaker. I could hear their dog Riley barking in the background.

“Hey, Alyssa! How are you?! Michaela was worried about you, said you hadn’t called in a few days and she asked me to check on you. What’s up?”

This was very typical of my brother-in-law. He and my sister were high school sweethearts. They started dating at 14 and got married at 28 - they’ve literally been together for more of their lives than not. He was always like a sixth brother to me, the one I liked the best. He was always there for me as much as he was for Michaela, and I always appreciated that about him.

“Yeah, I’m fine. I’ve been super busy. Working, reading, meeting boys, studying -”

“No, Kyle. Not yet, anyway,” I said, scoffing at the end of my sentence. It wouldn’t be the first time Kyle beat a guy up for me.

“Good. Your mom’s worried about you too. You should call her later.” I let out a loud, elongated groan at the suggestion. I love my mother, I do. But she is the very definition of a helicopter parent.

“Thank you for the list of people I should call,” I said with a laugh, pulling my dinner together. “How’s the landscaping business getting along?”

I talked to Kyle for another half hour before he told me he had to go. It was already 9 here in L.A. which meant it was midnight back home. I told him I’d call my sister and mother in the morning since they were probably already sleeping and left my phone on the kitchen counter as I ate on the couch and watched Hulu. I’d been hooked on The Handmaid’s Tale, having read it when I was younger and knew I deserved a break from studying, so I finished two episodes.

When I was done, I cleaned my dishes and put them away, going back to my room to do some reading before bed. I pulled the book I had purchased out of my backpack and smiled as I thought about my day with Grayson. If it weren’t for this book, I never would have met him.

Maybe that would’ve been a good thing.

I frowned. The thought had come so clearly from a dark corner of my brain. I sighed and put the book down in my lap, staring at it. Was going on a date with Grayson a good idea? Were we rushing things? WAS IT EVEN A DATE?!

The thought caught me off guard and I sat up a little straighter, my eyes widening. He hadn’t called it a date and neither had I. I let out an agonized growling sort of noise and flopped down face first onto my bed.

Oh, fuck.

NGC 604, an emission nebula in Messier 33
Image Credit: H. Yang (UIUC), J. Hester (ASU), HST/NASA/ESA

NGC 604 is an emission nebula, a star-forming (H II) region of nearly 1,500 light-years across, located in a spiral arm of the Triangulum Galaxy (Messier 33), about 2.7 million light-years away from Earth in the northern constellation of Triangulum (the Triangle). It is approaching us at approximately 226 kilometers per second.

NGC 604 is one of the largest known stellar nurseries in the Local Group of galaxies. This expansive cloud of interstellar gas and dust is over 40 times the size of the visible portion of the Orion Nebula, and more than 6,300 times as luminous as the Orion Nebula. If it were at the same distance it would outshine Venus.

1947 Bentley Mark VI by Franay

After World War II, coachworker Franay worked with Mr. Gudol to prove to the world France was still a world power with elegance and high class. He certainly succeeded, the car is adorned with crystal drinking flask compartments, a matching frogskin suitcase and high heels, among other amenities. Still notable today, it sold for 2.7 million in 2012, this Bentley Mark VI is regarded as the most successful Bentley of all time. It won the first 2 major Concours d’Elegance and countless awards since then.

Kaine kicked Betsy’s ass by proving she isn’t fit for the position as Secretary of Education. She doesn’t care about students—poor students, students with disabilities, and has no idea how the public school system works. Betsy has   never taught in a school environment, never attended a public school, and never sent her own children to a public school. Not only that, this billionaire gave $2.7 million to Republican candidates in 2016 to get nominated, and her family has given over $200 million over the years. With Trump’s picks, we’re headed for an oligarchical government.

Overlooked quotes from Taylor’s conversation with Kanye:

“I’m like this close to overexposure”

“It’s the most Instagram likes I’ve ever gotten, it was like 2.7 [million]”

“It didn’t matter if I had sold 7 million of that album before you did that, which is what happened. You didn’t know who I was before that, it’s fine.”

“And it means I can make these things happen and I have the ideas to do it and I create these things and concepts, and I’m always gonna respect you”
