Day 14: Can’t Go Home

He drives them to his apartment wordlessly after stuffing toiletries and underwear into a bag for her stay, attempting to be discreet. At a red light, Mulder looks over at Scully and watches her eyelashes move as she blinks, head tilted against the window. He reaches over and grasps her hand, entwining their fingers; she squeezes back but after a moment, she pulls her hand away to tuck her hair behind her ears and doesn’t replace her hand. Mulder nods to himself as he sees a spot of blood on her neck and looks back at the road.

He heads straight to the bathroom with her toiletries in tow. “Do you want to shower?”

She looks at herself in the mirror and nods, bringing a hand to the blood on her neck. Mulder puts the bag on the toilet and hesitates for a moment, until Scully breaks her gaze with the mirror and lets it fall to the floor, eyes wet. He sighs, eyebrows scrunched in concern, and steps forward to embrace her. She grips the fabric of his shirt, arms pulled close to her body and face pressed to his sternum as tears stain his shirt with her agony.

“I’ve got you,” Mulder whispers against the crown of her head, holding his lips there.

Mulder turns on the radio while he cooks and smiles when Scully starts to nod her head along as he hands her a bowl of spaghetti. She helps him wash the dishes as they hum along, smiling softly as the songs change, and Paul Anka’s “Put Your Head On My Shoulder” starts playing. “Oh, I used to love this one when I was in high school and college. Haven’t listened to it in years,” she comments.

Mulder dries his hands and turns to her. “C’mon, Scully. Let’s dance.”

“Mulder…”

“Let me hold you. I want to hold you.” She smiles softly again and dries her own hands before placing her hands in his own. Mulder places them on the back of his neck before lacing his fingers together at the small of her back. “I like your shirt.”

“I should think so,” Scully says, letting her eyes slip closed as their foreheads come together, “it’s yours, after all.”

“The pants are great, too.”

“Shut up and hold me, Mulder.”
