Quick Anxiety Self-Check, Part 2
Can you feel your heartbeat in your ears?
Can you take the kind of deep breath that happens when you yawn, or does it feel like it stops short? Like you’re wearing something tight around your chest and your lungs won’t fill up properly. Focus on slow, rhythmic breathing; try to get that satisfying deep breath. Try to yawn on purpose.
Is your body temperature fluctuating rapidly (a petty fight back and forth between hot flashes and cold sweats)? Cool your body down. Wet waschloth on forehead. Drink water. Staying comfortable is pivotal.
Are your hands shaking?
Do you have shivers or tingling sensations in your head or along your spine? (Your nervous system is in overdrive).
Are you suddenly, inexplicably irritable or impatient?
Are your thoughts looping? Give your brain a break. Watch TV or something else that is mind-numbing – distraction isn’t always a bad thing.Your brain needs rest, too.
Is there a sudden increase in restlessness or fidgeting? Don’t try and force yourself still. You fidget for a reason. Your body needs an outlet for the influx of tension and energy.
Trust your body. Listen to it. It’s on your side.
