“I am astonished in my teaching to find how many poets are nearly blind to the physical world. They have ideas, memories, and feelings, but when they write their poems they often see them as similes. To break this habit, I have my students keep a journal in which they must write, very briefly, six things they have seen each day—not beautiful or remarkable things, just things. This seemingly simple task usually is hard for them. At the beginning, they typically “see” things in one of three ways: artistically, deliberately, or not at all. Those who see artistically instantly decorate their descriptions, turning them into something poetic: the winter trees immediately become “old men with snow on their shoulders,” or the lake looks like a “giant eye.” The ones who see deliberately go on and on describing a brass lamp by the bed with painful exactness. And the ones who see only what is forced on their attention: the grandmother in a bikini riding on a skateboard, or a bloody car wreck. But with practice, they begin to see carelessly and learn a kind of active passivity until after a month nearly all of them have learned to be available to seeing—and the physical world pours in. Their journals fill up with lovely things like, “the mirror with nothing reflected in it.” This way of seeing is important, even vital to the poet, since it is crucial that a poet see when she or he is not looking—just as she must write when she is not writing. To write just because the poet wants to write is natural, but to learn to see is a blessing. The art of finding in poetry is the art of marrying the sacred to the world, the invisible to the human.”

The whole "the brain isn't fully mature until age 25" bit is actually a fairly impressive bit of psuedoscience for how incredibly stupid the way it misinterprets the data it's based on is.

Okay, so: there's a part of the human brain called the "prefrontal cortex" which is, among other things, responsible for executive function and impulse control. Like most parts of the brain, it undergoes active "rewiring" over time (i.e., pruning unused neural connections and establishing new ones), and in the case of the prefrontal cortex in particular, this rewiring sharply accelerates during puberty.

Because the pace of rewiring in the prefrontal cortex is linked to specific developmental milestones, it was hypothesised that it would slow down and eventually stop in adulthood. However, the process can't directly be observed; the only way to tell how much neural rewiring is taking place in a particular part of the brain is to compare multiple brain scans of the same individual performed over a period of time.

Thus, something called a "longitudinal study" was commissioned: the same individuals would undergo regular brain scans over a period of mayn years, beginning in early childhood, so that their prefrontal development could accurately be tracked.

The longitudinal study was originally planned to follow its subjects up to age 21. However, when the predicted cessation of prefrontal rewiring was not observed by age 21, additional funding was obtained, and the study period was extended to age 25. The predicted cessation of prefrontal development wasn't observed by age 25, either, at which point the study was terminated.

When the mainstream press got hold of these results, the conclusion that prefrontal rewiring continues at least until age 25 was reported as prefrontal development finishing at age 25. Critically, this is the exact opposite of what the study actually concluded. The study was unable to identify a stopping point for prefrontal development because no such stopping point was observed for any subject during the study period. The only significance of the age 25 is that no subjects were tracked beyond this age because the study ran out of funding!

It gets me when people try to argue against the neuroscience-proves-everybody-under-25-is-a-child talking point by claiming that it's merely an average, or that prefrontal development doesn't tell the whole story. Like, no, it's not an average – it's just bullshit. There's no evidence that the cited phenomenon exists at all. If there is an age where prefrontal rewiring levels off and stops (and it's not clear that there is), we don't know what age that is; we merely know that it must be older than 25.

People focus on the "poor little girls are being manipulated into being trans" transphobia but completely ignore the "heterosexual women who fetishize gay man and want to force gay men to have sex with them" transphobia. And whenever I bring it up people just act like im crazy and that trans men are never seen as sexual perverts while everyday I get someone yelling at me online telling me im a sexual pervert who wants to rape gay men. People can't seem to wrap their head around the fact that a group can be infantilized and demonized at the same time.

I Am Not Your Asian American Doll: a comic for AAPI Heritage Month 2023

I usually spend a lot of time editing and fine-tuning my comics so that they come across as polite and inoffensive. But honestly, I’m really tired of the way Asian cultures and countries are treated / talked about while Asian people themselves are excluded, and thought it was about time I really let my rage out lol.

You're missing out on Drakes career going up in flames.Look up Kendrick Lamarrs new diss track on Drake and you will never look at him the same again

are you saying that prodigy and arguably the greatest lyricist alive Kendrick Lamar of To Pimp A Butterfly fame was able to publicly humiliate pop rapper and child predator Drake? im shocked.

Avatar

alright actually i was dismissing this because i dont really keep up with celebrity beef so most of it goes over my head but after listening kendrick did just release the most scathing diss track in rap history (not an exaggeration, i am speaking entirely non-hyperbolically when i say this).

and, to be clear since kendrick has released several diss tracks in a row over the course of the past few days, i am referring to Meet the Grahams, a song not directed at drake, but is instead Kendrick speaking slowly, softly, and sadly towards Drake's family members over a somber piano about how him being a terrible person has fucked up their lives while also revealing some incredibly direct and personal sexual misconduct allegations in the portion addressed to his mother, Sandra.

this is, like, historically important to rap music and it's kind of astonishing.

update:

i think it's important to recognize Meet the Grahams not as a piece of a dunking campaign, but as a sincerely heartbreaking and terrifyingly stark glimpse into the life of someone who has had predatory, vile behaviors enabled and had enough power to ignore anyone trying to get to him. i don't know that i'm capable of putting it into words, but this one feels a bit too important and sincere to treat as a "drake's funeral" anthem, even in an ironic tone.

that is reserved for the OTHER diss track that he released in the SAME DAY which has a much bouncier and "point and laugh" tone, which will have you going "OOOOOOOOOH MY GOOOOOOOOOD" in the first 90 seconds, regardless of whether or not you know anything about the beef.

that's this one:
