the things that make tumblr at all usable and favored by us– the older web blog features, the anonymity– that is still being taken away. it HAS been being taken away for some time now. i am urging you people to reveiwbomb the tumblr app. force them to acknowledge that users do not like these changes.
Good news! You can let Tumblr Staff know what you think about every version of Tumblr in a way that they might listen to! Here is a long survey from a blog associated with Staff and here is a short survey from the same blog. The blog, although full of surveys, does not allow reblogs. However, I took the long survey and later they improved one thing I complained about, so there is a chance more people complaining about changes could halt their enshittification. I cannot retake the surveys, so I must ask you all to send feedback where I cannot.

i know your alien designs aren't very human, but do you have any advice on how design an upright and bipedal insect? or creatures with exoskeletons in general? so far i know that a hunched over posture will be needed to make room for all those arms and vestigial wings. the bipedalism is what is currently throwing me for a loop- both in how it evolved and the leg structure/gait. maybe creating something with a mix of internal and external skeletons would be better for this kind of creature?
Long post, but I couldn’t resist an opportunity to talk about LEGS: how and why?
One reason animals evolve bipedalism is because it’s very energetically efficient. Humans are champs at endurance walking partly because we’re letting gravity do half the work, falling forward with every step. In comparison, an animal like a beetle or a newt with splayed legs has a very stable standing position, but in all parts of their walk cycle, they’re actively pushing their body up against gravity. This is no biggie when you weigh a fraction of an ounce, but once you’re pushing 50 pounds it becomes a chronic problem. In the evolution of land vertebrates, you can see limb attachments starting at the sides of the body (i.e. ancient amphibians) where the fins used to be, but in later animals, the limbs moved underneath the body and became struts to passively support their body weight against gravity. (i.e. a horse)
But why move onto only two legs? Well, feet are also heavy, and in order to walk you have to lift them up. This is the motivation for many animals evolving digitigrade or even unguligrade legs: if there’s less heavy bones and complex joints at the end of your leg, that’s less weight to pull up against gravity, which means you can run slightly faster and walk slightly more efficiently.
And for animals with only two walking legs, that’s even LESS weight that they have to lift around in order to get up and go places... at the price of having fewer backups in case of injury.
So, that’s great. What about arthropods though? Well, I think the main reason we don’t see any bipedal arthropods on our planet right now is because they don’t have any of the evolutionary pressures that cause it. First of all, they aren’t big and heavy-- arthropods are limited by their passive diffusion respiratory systems, and their need to wriggle out of their entire skeleton and be mushy for a while after in order to grow. Second, they’re not being pushed into the long distance walking lifestyle of humans or horses-- arthropods with distance to cover just fly over it, because they weigh nothing, so flying is super easy. But if you muck around and change some of those evolutionary factors, how would the leg structure of (for example) a beetle change to accommodate them?
I’d imagine it would look strangely familiar. Legs straightening out, moving underneath the body, simplifying and strengthening the hinges, we’ve been here before. What’s new is that there’s more leg to work with. For walking efficiency at a larger size, I’d expect one of the pairs may reduce their role in locomotion, somewhat like the forelimbs in mantids or butterflies. If you’re aiming to make a bipedal bug, forelimb specialization is a good excuse to remove four of them from the ground. As for the legs on the ground, another familiar phenomenon may happen over time...
With similar motivation, mass would move away from the foot and towards the body in cursorial species just like for vertebrates. As for structure itself in the exoskeleton, I recommend looking at the larger arthropods of real life... terrestrial crustaceans like coconut crabs come to mind. For a truly huge arthropod, a mix of endoskeleton and exoskeleton and/or a water-dependent molt might be necessary to get away with the high body weight. As for posture, the world is your oyster! Humanoid or not, just make sure your handsome lad has a good center of balance!

Hey, I usually don't make serious posts, but this one is a big deal to me and many other small creatives, so please read or spread the message, especially in light of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
Google Labs is introducing a new ai that will just scrape your documents for ideas, plots, and other things to feed its algorithms. This information is stored SEPARATELY from your Google account.
Google will be collecting this user data and have at their disposal the ability to have free scripts for any content they want to produce without giving a cent to the original authors of these scripts, novels, character organizers, fics, etc. that the ai would be heavily basing these generated stories on. But that's not all, these ai's are also showing these works to human reviewers in order to "help improve quality of products" sharing works without consent of the author with real actual people to see if the ai is responding well enought to the prompts and imput (aka the intire documents as this is a fully intagrated ai -_-)
The reason this is going to be so terrible is that not if but when Google decides to open a production company (youtube movies will be first but they likely will open another streaming platform) these scripts their ai wrote them are probably going to be almost wholly plagiarized from docs user content that was stolen, without paying an actual writer anything at all.
If you are at all creative in the slightest PLEASE get your work off of docs before the features are fully integrated, scrub your google drive, and move to another program. Mircosoft, Libre (free and open source) ANYTHING to protect your works and if possible move away from Google products generally. Use a different search engine even. I'm going to link two TikTok creators from who I found this information as well as a list of alternative products to use away from Google in hopes to avoid them. Make them feel the backlash. It doesn't matter if they already have your data take charge of your internet person and DON'T GIVE IN
As of July 1st, Google Docs is scraping everything written within them for AI, and after finding that out this morning, I decided to research a bit to find an alternative - at least for myself and Kit (kitthekazoo) to use. A few people wanted to know what I found by way of options, and I think I found the program that I, at least, will be using for the foreseeable future - unless my research turns up something bad about this one too.
I'm going to start using Microsoft 365 - a free, online based version of Microsoft Office. Things written within the system on a computer or in a browser, much like Google Docs, will transfer instantly to the app (available for iOS an android), and vice versa. The app even has more formatting options than the Google Docs/Drive apps did, which was my main complaint up until the AI thing. It's a lot easier to tab in just one line of a paragraph - something that couldn't be done on the Google apps - and all of the features are laid out really nicely too, easier to find than just randomly trying different menus ever was.
And like I said, it's free.
There's online versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote all within one app. I know that Google used to slow down my phone and kill my battery when I had to have multiple apps downloaded - one for forms, one for documents, one for sheets, and then the Drive app to keep it all together - so I love that it's all in one and neatly integrated. There is a premium version - $7 a month for one person or $10 a month for a family plan of up to six people - which includes the old versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote that you can download to your computer and work offline (I assume that the app is like Google's was, where you can still work in the documents offline, it just won't sync the changes until you have internet again), but those documents won't sync up between there and the app, as far as I'm aware, so I'm perfectly happy with the free version, myself.
And, if you already have a Microsoft account (MSN, Outlook, Hotmail email addresses all count!), you can log in with that, and it will sync everything you have connected to that! My app even synced up with the post-it note app on my old laptop! So I have all these old notes I thought were lost forever, as well as gifset ideas!
