SaucyWench's Writing Stuff

@saucywenchwritingblog / saucywenchwritingblog.tumblr.com

Inspiring things, shorts and drabbles, and other things related to my writing. Take the things that you find helpful, and ignore the rest. SaucyWench's Ao3

An “initiation well,” used in magical rites, which was excavated at the Quinta da Regaleira estate in Sintra, Portugal.

I feel like you’d love to know that this is from a literal palace that a Freemason built with an occultist buddy with the express and explicit purpose of embodying different occult traditional principles. The Freemason built an 88 foot deep inverted tower-well with a compass and cross at its lowest point because he wanted to be able to use it for magic.

heyy i saw that in your AU ideas list you have Rockstar AU but no prompts for that, so i was wondering if you could come up with some? especially for a rockstar dating an ‘ordinary’ person, not involved in their world. thank you!

Hi :)

You're right, there are no actual Rockstar AU prompts yet.

I found an ask I answered two years ago about a Rockstar dating someone working 9-5, so definitely check my answer for that out!

Rockstar AUs

  1. Dating a rockstar had its perks, but also some downsides. Not being able to go on tour with them, meant missing them for months on end.
  2. They never thought their shift in the hospital would turn out like this. With an international rockstar with a broken arm in front of them because they tried to stage dive and failed.
  3. Social media has a field day when pictures turn up that show the famous rockstar with an unknown person, definitely being on a date.
  4. Their co-workers don't know that they are dating this rockstar everyone knows. That changes when their rockstar partner comes to work to take them out for dinner.
  5. Going to all their concerts is not possible when working a 9-5 job, but they always try to wait for their partner to come home to say good night.
  6. They've started dating when it was still a garage band, playing at proms and bar mitzvahs. They're still dating but one of them becoming a famous rockstar has turned their life upside down.
  7. Being on tour is not the easiest when their partner can't come with them. Concerts every other day, city after city, different countries, different time zones. It takes a lot of work to keep a healthy relationship going across the globe.
  8. The band's partners all have nothing to do with the entertainment business, so they created their own little support group to handle their rockstars together.

I hope you enjoy these and I will link them to the AU list, if I don't forget again :D

If a character (in a high stress situation with minimal information) makes a different decision than you would (a viewer with no stress and more information) —

That is not a plot hole. Thank you.

ICYMI, there was fear that companies were scraping public AO3 fics to train their AI without the consent of AO3 or its users. That fear has been confirmed.

AO3 has written about what they’re doing (and what they’re not able to do), and they recommend restricting your work to AO3 registered users only. [Instructions here]

This gross misuse of the archive by techbros is why I’ve locked down my fics for the foreseeable future. I recommend the rest of you do the same.

I have locked my works to registered users only. I’m very sad about it.

I did this too and it’s heartbreaking.

It burns me up that these fics have to be locked down. I have done the same - but it’s a heartbreak.

Do you have any tips when it comes to writing a dual timeline?

For example: It's the apocalypse. The first chapter starts in the present. Apocalypse in full swing (like day 238 or smth) and then the next chapter jumps to Day 1 to slowly give a gimplse at what happened. Nad somewhere in the middle the timelines "meet" and its just one timeline

How to write dual timelines

Writing a story with dual timelines means that the story is being told from two different perspectives, each happening at another time. The POV can still come from the same person, but often the timelines are being told from the POV of someone else that has a connection to the other timeline and protagonist. The timelines can be only hours apart (often in crime stories) or hundreds of years apart.

When using your example of a few days apart, I would focus on the commonalities and also the differences that can be seen in just the span of a few weeks. How much has changed and what little things have stayed the same and why?

Both timelines need a reason for being used in the story. This structure needs to add depth to the plot and it can be used to reveal plot twists and overall enhance the narrative.

When talking about structure, the stories with dual timelines are often structured in a way that they jump back and forth between the timelines. You can start off by getting the readers invested in one timeline and then start switching it with the other timeline.

The problem with dual timelines can be that readers are more interested in one timeline then the other. So be careful to give both of them a good enough storyline and purpose for the whole story to be interesting and relevant for the reader.

So, the most important thing to remember is to find a good balance and to connect the timelines well enough that the flow seems seamless and it shows why both of the timelines are needed for the whole story to unfold.

Pro tip: Use some aspects (conflict, interests, worries, places, etc.) that are going on in both stories and when switching to the other timeline, carry whatever the first protagonist was doing or thinking over to the second protagonist.

The United States can be a harsh place to be a child. There are guns galore and bullies in school. Suicide is on the rise, homelessness is rampant, and many school budgets have been scraped down to the bone. In New York City, almost one in five children are poor. One in seven doesn’t have enough to eat. Even well-off youngsters struggle with sexual abuse, depression, stress, and the cruelty of online life. Thank God there is one place where all is sweetness and light, or will be soon—children’s books.

You may have read that Roald Dahl’s classic tales have been altered to be, well, nicer. Because as we all know, niceness is what Roald Dahl is all about. Forget the misanthropy, physical disgust, and delight in transgression and violence and extravagance that give his stories bite and edge. Forget, too, the dependence of wit and vividness on specific, concrete words, on their sounds and evocative associations. What matters is that no one in the whole world be offended and that no opportunity be missed for moral improvement.

i’ll never understand people who can’t make fun of their faves a little. like yes i love this character and would defend them to my grave but also they’re stupid sometimes and they do dumb things and imma make fun of them for it

Oh hey btw: If you're starting your second draft of something and you're having a hard time editing out the useless fluff that doesn't lead the story anywhere, consider changing tactics: Condense, don't cut.

"Kill your darlings" is bullshit, you shouldn't throw out things that spark joy, just put them into good use or somewhere they're not in the way. Combine scenes, characters and locations. You've got two beloved but unimportant background characters with only a vague scraping role in the story? Combine them. Have just one, who now has the traits, speaking lines and the role of both of them.

You've got a Super Important But Boring scene, and a scene that doesn't progress the story but was basically just you indulging in describing a wonderful location? Combine them. Have the characters have that Super Important Conversation in the pretty rose garden or the lovely bookshop you wanted to include.

You've got two really cool locations that are in the same city but both only show up once, and it feels like a waste to indulge in describing them in detail? Combine them. The smoky tavern and the smoky witch's brew shop are now working out of the same building - the witch and the tavern keeper are now married.

If you feel like you have too much description or too many characters, don't throw anything out before you've checked if you have an empty shelf to put them in. Give the Cool Character Description to a previously nondescript character who only shows up to tell the protagonist the One Important Thing. Make the Cool Location You Described For Three Pages But Which Only Shows Up Once show up again later.

Plagiarism Advice

Hi all! Throughout my unfortunately substantial experience with my work being stolen, I’ve learned a lot of really useful tips to deal with plagiarism. I hope these help!

  • Whenever you post your own work on a site, make sure to attribute your name or url to it.
  • One of the easiest ways to find plagiarism of your work is to copy and paste lines from your work into Google. If they’ve been stolen, chances are results will pop up.
  • When you find a result, contact the ‘author’ of the plagiarized piece first. Ask them to remove it or to provide credit to you.
  • If they decline, contact the owner of the site the ‘author’ has posted your work on, and ask them to remove it. Provide them with links of both your original work and the thief’s work, as well as date stamps to show that your piece was written or posted first. Screenshots too.
  • If the owner refuses to remove the piece, go to the following website (www.whoishostingthis.com), and type in the name of the site your stolen work is posted on. This will reveal what company or site is hosting the site your work is on.
  • Once the hosting site pops up, email or contact their abuse department with the same info (screenshots, urls, links, etc) you originally provided the first site owner. Ask them to remove the piece. Make sure to provide them with a formal DMCA notification. You can easily generate one here and it only takes about 2 minutes.
  • This last step should almost always work. If it doesn’t, you have every right to threaten legal action unless the hosting site complies with your request to have your stolen work removed.
