Here are some workouts that have really helped me tone my abs and sides (muffin-top-zone)….I’ll try and describe them as best I can since the names don’t always describe them.

  • Low-plank V-ups (also called dolphin-ups): get into plank position on your elbows, push you butt up into the air, your shoulders will come “down” and your body will form an upside down “v”. I do 3 sets of 10 and the slower you go the better the burn!
  • Hip-dips: get into plank position on your elbows, let one of your hips dip down to the floor - your whole body will twist a bit to do this - and come back up to plank position. Go back and forth on each side and go slowly, it can be a little hard on your lower back if you’re not used to planks. I try to do 3 sets of 10 on each side.
  • Toe-touches: lay on your back and raise your legs up in the air keeping them as straight as you can. Reach up and touch your toes! I do 3 sets of 20.
  • Ankle-grabs: laying on your back with your knees bent (like you’re going to do situps) let your arms rest by your side on the floor. Keeping your back on the ground, pull your body to the side so you can touch one of your ankles, then come back and do the other side. (Your back should stay on the floor for the entire thing and it’s okay if you can’t completely touch your ankles.) I do 3 sets of 20.
  • Bicycles: I think everyone has a basic idea of what these are. Just remember not to hurt your neck or pull too quickly! Go slow and try for 3 sets of 20.
  • Diamonds: laying on your back, start with your legs together flat on the ground. (I find it helpful to put my hands under my butt.) Lift your legs up and as you do, bring them out for the first half up and back in for the second half. From where you’re laying it should look like your feet are drawing a diamond in the air. I aim for 3 sets of 10 and go slow.
  • Russian Twists: sit on the ground and keep your legs bent. Hold your upper body “up” like you’re almost at full sit-up and hold your legs up…your body will look a bit like a “v” but with your legs bent and perpendicular to the floor. (I like to hold my arms up like I’m boxing but you can also hold a weight by your chest.) Twist your upper body from side to side, I like to punch a bit too at each twist. I do 3 sets of 20.
  • Side-dips: if you have weights, this is a great one to use them on, but it’s not necessary. Standing up straight keep your arms relaxed by your side. Bend your body to the side and slide your hand down the outside of your leg as far as you can comfortably go. Straighten back up and do the other side. I do 3 sets of 20 on each side, but 3 sets of 10 if I’m using weights.
  • Corner-kicks: get on the ground on your hands and knees. Starting with one leg, bring your knee to the opposite shoulder (your body will “crunch” like a situp) then kick your leg out behind you. You want to aim “out” away from your body, not straight back. I do 3 sets of 20 on each side.
  • Spider-kicks: get on the ground on your hands and knees. Starting with one leg, raise it up and try to touch your knee to the elbow on that same side (you’ll look a bit like a dog lifting its leg). Kick your leg straight back, then bring it back to your elbow. (If you can, you can do this while in a plank position for some extra burn.) I do 3 sets of 20 on each side.
