If they miss you, they’ll call. If they want you, they’ll say it. If they care, they’ll show it. And if not, they aren’t worth your time.

take my whole heart too

Maya is dead set on avoiding Lucas today, she doesn’t need to acknowledge anything she is feeling and doesn’t need him to know either. After the whole ‘triangle, but not really’ thing with Riley, they finally started going out, and it was….good. It was actually…really good and Maya was surprised that something good was happening to her, she was hesitantly starting to believe the universe was looking out for her. Maya didn’t expect a few months into whatever this was with Lucas that her feelings would get stronger….which she didn’t know was possible because she thought she was at her limit. So, her feelings had to go and ruin everything, they had to go and get stronger and nothing BIG even happened.

Lucas, was just over and they were watching a movie (well, Maya was throwing popcorn at his mouth, trying to get it in when he started talking). They were just watching a really stupid movie, and she kept criticizing it, like…every second (”Wow, he’s throwing rocks at her window how unpredictable.”) Then, out of nowhere he just turns to look at her, eyes filled with….something, he just kept looking at her, making her heart beat faster and faster. God, she just froze…like didn’t move at all, popcorn in hand ready to throw at his face and she didn’t do it because she couldn’t move. He kind of looked amazed, like he was looking at her without knowing it and something in her just, bursted. (That sound gross, but that’s how she felt). Like, her stomach was exploding and for a second she thought her appendix blew up and she needed to go to the hospital. But, no…she just looked into his eyes (god, why was she being so mushy, why is her heart betraying her?) and she just knew she was more gone than she’s ever been in her entire life.

It was just one of their plain ol’ regular movie nights, nothing special, but something was different this time and she didn’t know why. Lucas gave her a confused smirk, turned back to the movie and gave her hand that he was holding a squeeze. The still frozen Maya gasped. ‘Oh my god what is wrong with me?’ she thought, giving Lucas a tight lipped smile when he turned to look at her. After that she couldn’t stop fidgeting she didn’t know she had to go through this again, this nervous, feel like throwing up stage. She already went through this, she went through liking him, she went through hand holding, kissing, dating, so what was happening? Finally, the movie ended and Lucas went home. Maya knew he sensed something was wrong because she was quiet for the rest of the night. She just gave him a quick wave as he left. She slid down the door until she was sprawled out on the ground, like a ragdoll. Putting her head in her hands she sighed, “Oh, no.”

So, that is why Maya is late to class (well, shes late sometimes, but actually has a reason this time so it’s justified) to avoid Lucas, because once the bell rings class started and its time to listen to the teacher for the whole hour and not talk at all. Okay, so that was a total lie because Mr. Matthews lets them talk all the time in class. Maya slides in class just as the bell was ringing, and heads to her seat. Lucas gives her a smile and she just looks away. She can’t look at him right now, it makes her too giddy. Mr. Matthews starts talking about something and Maya tunes him out in favour of sketching. She tries not to shake her knee, but its a nervous habit and shes really nervous and why is she so nervous? She keeps her hands busy, sketching out Riley, who is at her desk, following along in her textbook to whatever her dad is talking about, twirling her hair around her finger, out of habit. Maya just finishes cleaning up her sketch as the bell rings, the students are gathering their things and heading out the door. Riley looks over to Maya and smiles wide. “Peaches.” Maya throws an arm over Riley’s shoulder squeezing her slightly. “How ya doing?” Riley looks over at Maya’s sketchbook in her hand. “Aw, Maya you drew me. You didn’t listen to anything in class today, did you?” Riley took Maya’s sketchbook while the girls walked out of the classroom into the hallway. “I had something on my mind.” Maya says, as Riley scans the sketch of her with her eyes, looking like shes seen the Mona Lisa. (Maya thinks Riley is too nice about her artwork) “It’s just a sketch, Riles.” Maya sighs, a smile on her face as she takes her sketchbook back and closes it. “I love your sketches, everything you make is beautiful.” Riley replies while opening her locker. “What’s on your mind?” She then asks, looking back at Maya. “Uh, nothing.” “Maya…” “What?” “You just said you had something on your mind, what’s on your mind?” “Oh…that…well you know it isn’t really important-” “Maya, you aren’t going to make me forget about this.” Maya fake gasps, “Riley…do you think so low of me that I would try to trick my best friend?” “Is it about me?” “No.” “Is it about Farkle?” “Nope.” “Is it about Lucas?” Maya hesitates, “No.” Riley’s eyes go wide, “This is about Lucas!” “What? No, it isn’t where would you get a silly idea like that?” Maya furrows her brows. “Maya, you hesitated. What’s going on?” Riley says, concern evident in her voice. “Hey.” Lucas. He walks up to the girls, his gaze shifting to Maya. “Hey, I gotta get to class. Can’t be late to art!” Maya rushes out, already planning her escape. Lucas’ face reflected Riley’s, they were so confused. Maya was running away from her problems again, and it was so obvious. She hasn’t even spoken to Lucas today which was so unlike her. Riley was trying to figure out what was going on between them, looking from Maya to Lucas, back to Maya again. “But, Maya we didn’t get to-” Lucas tries to get out, but Maya cuts him off. “Bye, Lucas.” She says while walking quickly towards the other side of the school. She couldn’t play their game today, her heart was bursting at the seams. Riley turns toward Lucas, a puzzled look takes over her features, “She called you ‘Lucas’,” He looks forlornly at the the blonde head getting farther and father away, being drowned by the students flooding the hallway. “I… don’t know whats going on.”

Riley finds her at lunch, because she’s Riley and she knows where Maya hides out when something is happening. “Maya?” Riley calls on the other side of the janitor’s closet. Not waiting for her to respond, she opens the door and swiftly closes it behind her. Maya looks up from her knees, and her mouth quirks. ‘Of course Riley’s here.’ she thinks, scooting over to make room for the brunette to sit down. Riley takes a seat, careful not to shake the shelf of cleaning supplies behind her. “Maya, what’s going on with you?” “Do we have to talk about it?” “You know we have to talk about it.” “Okay, but how about this one time and one time only we don’t talk about it and we forget anything is wrong and we skip through a field of pretty flowers and sing and dance-” Maya quickly replies. Riley quickly turns her head to the blonde, in mock anger. “Maya, don’t try to distract me.” It’s quiet for a minute, Maya fidgeting with her hands again. “I don’t know what’s happening.” She finally gets out, not looking at Riley. “You mean…with you and Lucas?” Riley questions, “Do you not…like him anymore?” Maya scoffs at that and scrunches up her face, “Of course not.” “Well than what is it?” Riley asks, turning towards her friend. “I guess it’s…the opposite.” “You like him? Maya, you’ve liked him for years I don’t understand.” Riley states, willing Maya to look at her. “I know, but… I dunno, Riles. He was just looking at me with those eyes and that stupid face and his Ranger Rick grin and I froze.” “You froze?” “I froze and I don’t know what happened, it was…like my heart was going to explode.” “Thats-” “Gross, I know.” “Maya…” Riley paused, Maya turned to her. “Are you… are you in… love with him?” Maya’s eyes went wide in shock. Riley just said it she just said it right there and then and Maya couldn’t believe that even exited Riley’s mouth. Usually in this situation Maya would reply with a ‘Of course I’m not in love with, Huckleberry that’s just ridiculous.” but all she can muster is a quiet, “What?” Riley turns he whole body towards Maya, and takes her hand. “Do you maybe think that’s what you’re feeling? You know? Maybe, you are in love with him.” she says earnestly. “Riles…” Maya says, letting her head fall, “I…can’t be in love, that’s…just not…possible.” “What are you talking about? Of course you can be in love.” “Stop saying that, please stop saying that.” Maya says desperately. “Maya its ok.” “I’m sixteen. I can’t be.” Maya says dismissively , standing up. Riley follows, “Yes, you can. Maya, don’t try to run from this.” she says. Maya sighs, running her hand through her hair, “I don’t even know what it would feel like,” “How does Lucas make you feel.” “Riley.” “Tell me.” “Okay, I guess…he makes me feel…” Maya fiddles with her hands again “I guess he makes me feel…happy…and good…and he makes my heart hurt…in a good way, atleast I think theres a good way. And, when hes being such a Huckleberry, just himself,” Maya chuckles, “…it makes me smile so much it actually hurts which is so stupid because hes just a dumb Cowboy who makes my heart feel like exploding into a million pieces and all I think about is him. I care about him a lot and I don’t know what I’d do without him. I mean what if he doesn’t love me like that. What if I love him too much and… what if he leaves.” Maya finishes, her voice gets quiet towards the end. She just let everything that was building up inside her out, everything she fought hard not to think about.

Riley instantly pulls Maya into a tight embrace. “Riles…what if it happens again.” Maya’s voice cracks. “He wouldn’t do that to you.” Riley replies quickly. “But, what if he would.” “He wouldn’t.” Riley says wholeheartedly. “What if he leaves, Riley?” Maya asks, pulling away from the hug, looking at her best friend. “What if I tell him how I feel and he leaves me.” she continues, feeling her eyes start to moisten. Riley put both of her hands on Maya’s shoulders. “Lucas isn’t going to leave you, Maya. I know he isn’t. Please, don’t lose hope.” she says. “Lucas isn’t your dad. He isn’t going to be like your dad.” Riley says again trying to get the point across. “I’m scared.” Maya whispers, tear tracks start to appear down her cheeks. “I know, Peaches.” Riley puts her arm around her friend and leans her head against Maya’s.

School just let out, but Maya heads to the art room to let out her feelings, whatever they were. Maybe, painting them would make it less nerve-racking. She sets up a canvas, paints and brushes. She goes to get a cup of water from the sink and as shes walking back to her spot she hears a knock on the door. Making Maya jump in surprise, she sends the cup of water she had in her hand to the floor. She looks towards the door and Lucas is standing there his face looked just, confused. That seems to be a recurring emotion for the people around her today. ‘Not surprising.’ she thought. Maya’s eyes never left his, until he was a few feet in front of her. Snapping out of her weird daze she grabs a towel that was lying on a table and starts mopping up the water that surrounded her. “Maya-” Lucas starts “I really have to clean this up, it’s a safety hazard.” “Maya.” his tone turns hard. She reluctantly looks up at him as her hand stops moving. “I, uh…” Maya looks around her, trying to find words to come out of her mouth, anything at all. Well, not anything. She starts nervously biting the inside of her cheek. Lucas’ face softens as he bends down to her level. “Maya, what’s is going on?” He asks, searches her eyes for answers. “You’ve been avoiding me all day, I’ve tried to talk to you fives times today, and you called me ‘Lucas’, you never call me ‘Lucas’.” He said quickly, brows furrowed. Maya bites down on her cheek harder, trying to keep her emotions in check. God, this is what she does she drives people crazy, she messes with their lives. “I’ve been distracted, I’m sorry.” Maya says, looking anywhere but at him. She tries not to move her hands. “By what?” he asks, looking at her intently. Maya slowly gets up, leaving the towel in the puddle of water, and turns around. She can’t look at his worried face, she can’t look into his eyes right now it would make this too hard. Lucas moves closer to her, but stops when she says, “I have to tell you something.” She clasps her hands tightly in front of her willing them to behave. She doesn’t know what Lucas is thinking, he could be thinking a million things right now, but she wouldn’t know she can’t look. She doesn’t look. “I need to tell you something, please don’t say anything.” Her eyes are already starting to water which is the last thing she needs right now, she can do this. “He’s not your dad” Maya takes a deep breath. “Lucas isn’t going to leave you.” “Okay, so…” “He won’t.” “I’m sort of…” Maya trembles. “…in love with you, Huckleberry.” Silence. Maya can feel her heart beating faster than it ever has before, she can hear it pounding in her ears. Then, SLAM! That didn’t sound like her heart. She quickly spins around, finding Lucas on his back in the water Maya didn’t finish cleaning up, face recoiled in pain. She drops to his side, worriedly looking over him. “Do you even watch where you’re going, Sundance?” she says exasperatedly, his whole backside now drenched. Lucas just looks up at her dazed. “Oh, no. Are you going to slip into a coma or something?” Maya asks seriously, checking his head for any bumps. While Maya hurriedly checks that he’s okay, Lucas just keeps looking at her, mesmerised. “You’re in love with me?” Maya freezes again (She’s been doing a lot of that lately, but what do you expect?) and looks over at him. “I guess you’re okay then.” She manages to get out. Lucas leans up on his elbow. not even looking at the water surrounding him, his eyes just moving frantically over Maya’s face. “I’m really scared right now.” she admits quietly, water threatens to spill over her eyes. She hasn’t been this vulnerable in a long time, she hates being vulnerable, easy to read, putting herself out there and risking her worn heart to be stabbed again. Lucas just looks up at her, sort of in awe, like he did before. He’s actually been doing that a lot lately. “Maya, I’m so in love with you.” he says, lifting his other hand to caress her cheek. He doesn’t even realize he’s doing it. Maya lets out a breath she didn’t even know she was holding in. “Come on, short stack…you know I’d never leave you.” He says quietly, like he’s afraid he’ll startle her. Relief and adrenaline washes over Maya like a refreshing ocean wave, she instinctively grabs his face in both her hands and kisses him like she never has before. She loves this boy so much she doesn’t know what to do. He kisses her back, but it’s pretty hard to even kiss because they’re both giggling like idiots and smiling so much it just ends up with their teeth clashing together. Maya’s knee slips and she lands in the water, but she doesn’t even care because shes in love, and Lucas is here, hes here and he’s in love with her and she isn’t scared anymore.

I just want Lucas to call Maya “Blonde beauty” straight to her face.

“You’re my blonde beauty.”
