The Janus decision today was a defeat for organized labor, but it is not the end for us, nor even close. Polls show that over two thirds of young people would like to be in a union, but only about 6% are. Our generation, millennials, has been shown to have huge organizational potential. If you care about organized labor, we need your help now more than ever. Because we’re both just coming off the heels of some of the largest public sector (and wildcat, at that) strikes in American history, and at the same time seeing labor law be attacked like it hasn’t been for decades. We have to take the initiative, we cannot sit back and let our unions be dismantled by the government.

So take that potential energy and make it kinetic. If you’re not union right now, find your local IWW and sign up. Organize your workplace. Talk to your disgruntled coworkers about what you can do to improve your work conditions. If you *are* union, you’re probably aware that national private sector right-to-work is most likely on the way in the coming months or years. Talk to your less active fellow union members and make sure they’re in it for the long haul. Make sure you talk to new hires at your job and get them in the union.

We need every union member who cares to become an organizer, we can’t just sit around and be rank-and-file anymore. It won’t be good enough under this anti-labor government.

I’m seriously putting out the call: if you follow this blog and agree with any of the shit i talk about, whether you’re a well-read theorist or just somebody who knows they deserve better than what capitalism is giving you, find your local Industrial Workers of the World and join. If there isn’t one, try to organize a new branch or see if there’s another union organizing the industry you’re in, and join them. And don’t just be rank-and-file. Be an organizer. Be a labor leader. Fight for the working class. When you fight for a better workplace for yourself, you’re fighting for your coworkers, the rest of your industry, and every working person in the world.
