This site toppling the competition by opting to sell shoelaces instead of monetising their users must be one of the greatest examples of failing upwards in history

In the world of Bond Villain CEOs, the site run by Wile E. Coyote is king

I want slower packages delivered by transportation workers who are paid more to work less and I'm not kidding

Some of us are old enough to remember when literally everything took about 4 weeks to ship.

My couch is arriving in 4 weeks and company gave us a $200 gift card in apology after telling us it would take 4 weeks when we bought the thing. I-this instant gratification is really doing something to us. I know I sound like a grumpy old woman but it is ok to wait for things if it means fellow human beings are treated fairly.

I’m old enough to remember.

Instant gratification culture also bleeds over into areas where it’s impossible to accommodate…like MEDICAL CARE. No, you have not been “waiting around all morning for an X-ray”, Karen…you’ve been here an hour, and we’re still working on the ER patient right now, thx!!

Tbh I think fandom generally needs to get better at sitting with the uncomfortable fact that a story/fanwork/meme/whatever can hurt one person and help another

This is why I think “tag warning” culture is kinder and more constructive than cancel culture / “no problematic content” culture. One size does not fit all, but if we learn to be more aware of the fact that the same thing can be emotionally validating or cathartic to one person and upsetting to another, and pick up a general mindset of thinking before we post, “what might people need a heads up for in this content?”, we grow more compassionate, more thoughtful, and more understanding of the differences in people’s experiences.

As a disabled kid who was in the same phys ed class as everyone else with predictably horrifying results, HARD SAME

“Nobody should have to compete against people with biological advantages in the biological advantage assessment game!”

in middle school our grade in PE was how well we did in comparison to the rest of the class.

got the fastest mile? congrats, you have the 100%. the rest of us? we were fucked. fuck effort, fuck improvement, fuck participation and attitude, it was all about competition.

as a little kid, I enjoyed community sports a lot, and then around middle school i got heavier and worse at running and suddenly sports were just... off limits. the focus was entirely on being a good, competitive team and "kids having a fun time, getting exercise, and making friends" meant nothing. refusing to allow trans kids to play is the exact same principle

Anybody else got that Evergiven sized writers block

“Where’s the next chapter?!” Well buddy you’re never gonna guess

What’s the comic sans trick?

wingdings' true purpose as a font

Wingdings holy shit some of y'all are on a whole different level of galaxy wizard brain batshittery and I am in awe.

“Let us put it generally: if a regime is immoral, its citizens are free from all obligations to it.” – Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, Gulag Archipelago.

@VivianAngrisani on Twitter wrote on 6/8/2019: “Pia Klemp, a German biologist & boat captain faces 20 yrs in prison for rescuing 1,000+ migrants at risk of drowning whilst crossing the Mediterranean. Seeking asylum is a human right. Only 1 in 100 sea captains are female. This woman is a humanitarian, not a criminal. #FreePia”

To all the people commenting that she’s an accessory to “illegal immigration,” note that seeking asylum is a human right. Countries which refuse asylum are in violation of the Geneva Convention. They get away with this and propagandize complacency towards the victims by using bureaucracy to complicate immigration proceedings. During times of genocide, this is tantamount to hearing a would-be murder victim knocking on your door and locking the deadbolt.

People who risk dying getting smuggled across borders do so out of sheer desperation because the situation they’re leaving is worse. Finally, you are missing the entire point: violation of the law is warranted when the laws violate human rights and criminalize existence. Laws which call immigrants “illegal” are tools of a systemic negligence designed to condemn those who need legal protection the most.

Hiding Jewish people or smuggling them out of Germany was illegal too.

as of 10 february 2023, the petition is still just short of its goal of 500k signatures.

I’m a red-blooded corn-fed AMERICAN MAN and if I wanna get my tits chopped off that’s my god-given right as a tax payer.

Why should the government tell me what my gender is? Back in my day we earned our own genders uphill in a blizzard both ways.

Well I think this post has started reaching people that don’t get the joke. It was nice knowing you all.

No but this is hilarious and reminds me of a galaxy-brained shirt I saw the other day

Walk into the nearest Hobby Lobby wearing this and watch people begin to disintegrate

I want that to become my 4th of July shirt. I want to wear that shirt to the family barbecue so bad.

Guess who’s $25 poorer and prepared for July 4th already

"There are old poops who will say that you do not become a grown-up until you have somehow survived, as they have, some famous calamity -- the Great Depression, the Second World War, Vietnam, whatever. Storytellers are responsible for this destructive, not to say suicidal, myth. Again and again in stories, after some terrible mess, the character is able to say at last, 'Today I am a woman. Today I am a man. The end.' When I got home from the Second World War, my Uncle Dan clapped me on the back, and he said, 'You're a man now.' So I killed him. Not really, but I certainly felt like doing it. Dan, that was my bad uncle, who said a male can't be a man unless he'd gone to war. But I had a good uncle, my late Uncle Alex. He was my father's kid brother, a childless graduate of Harvard who was an honest life-insurance salesman in Indianapolis. He was well-read and wise. And his principal complaint about other human beings was that they so seldom noticed it when they were happy. So when we were drinking lemonade under an apple tree in the summer, say, and talking lazily about this and that, almost buzzing like honeybees, Uncle Alex would suddenly interrupt the agreeable blather to exclaim, 'If this isn't nice, I don't know what is.' So I do the same now, and so do my kids and grandkids. And I urge you to please notice when you are happy, and exclaim or murmur or think at some point, 'If this isn't nice, I don't know what is.'"

— Kurt Vonnegut, A Man Without a Country (2005)

if you don't do anything else today,

Please have a moment of silence for the people who were killed instead of freed when news of emancipation finally reached the furthest corners of the american south.

have another moment for the ledgers, catalogs, and records that were burned and the homes that were destroyed to hide the presence of very much alive and still enslaved people on dozens of plantations and homesteads across the south for decades after emancipation.

and have a third moment for those who were hunted and killed while fleeing the south to find safety across the border, overseas, in the north and to the west.

black people. light a candle, write a note to those who have passed telling them what you have achieved in spite of the racist and intolerant conditions of this world, feel the warmth of the flame under your hand, say a prayer of rememberance if you are religious, place the note under the candle, and then blow it out.

if you have children, sit them down and tell them anything you know about the life of oldest black person you've ever met. it doesn't have to be your own family. tell them what you know about what life was like for us in the days, years, decades after emancipation. if you don't know much, look it up and learn about it together.

This is Juneteenth.

white people CAN interact with this post. share it, spread it.

I love how Daniel was kinda offended when that bounty hunter was like "teal'c is the traitor jaffa, Carter is the past host of jolinar, and o'neill is a pain the goa'ulds behind. but Dr. Jackson? you're worth like 3 stale cheetos"
