Would you ever consider the challenge of un-ruining Scarlet Witch or is ruining more fun? :)

Avatar

i know i made some people mad last night but i also know that most people understood that I was being sarcastic.

she is not ruined forever and may be starring in a very popular movie that we are all very excited about

I know there is terrible misogynist writing in the world,  and writers do tend to take characters they love and put them through the dramatic wringer.  I know sometimes it’s hard to see the difference.

just look how I treated Matt Murdock and Peter Parker. I KILLED one of those guys.  I just think that BOTH male and female characters demand and deserve as complicated and intricate story as we can come up with.

I love the character and her entire history. some people think that I invented all of that bad stuff that happened to her but it was following her published history that led me to the house of M story in the first place.

and don’t ask me what’s happening in the last panel :-)

by the way, I didn’t write any of these.  :-)

Those panels are all John Byrne BTW. He had issues.

Wanda’s been my favorite Avenger to draw in this Annual. I just love her, and love to color her. It goes back to John Byrne drawing the Avengers in the late 70’s (80’s?). I hope Rick brings her back soon. I wouldn’t mind getting to draw her some more

This is great. And she's in the next Avengers movie, I can't imagine her being gone long... I hope.

Yes, Steve Englehart was fired from the book around this time for missing deadlines, though he claims it was just because Conway wanted to take over the book. Anyway Englehart plotted issue #152 and Conway's first solo issue was #153, which has Wanda flying. Flying! He didn't last long on the book.

FACT. NO NEITHER DO I. I literally just see people like ~lol the twins look like Wanda & Pietro and Vision is a robot~ like do you even know how goddamn genetics work. Does no one realize PIETRO looks EXACTLY LIKE MAGNETO?...

I don't have a picture, but the infamous '90s story "The Crossing" had Kang working with two twins named Malachi and Tobias, who were supposed to be Billy and Tommy. It would turn out that Kang plucked them from the timestream to screw with Wanda and Vision, I guess. But they never finished the story or made the reveal, so they were retconned into being Space Phantoms.

Anyway, one of the two twins did look like Vision and had a reddish face.

Originally one of the kids - I forget which - took after Vision in that no device could detect him (even Dr. Strange couldn't). But then Wanda didn't exactly "create" the kids anyway, she used a magic spell to make herself pregnant and infuse the pregnancy with her own essence and Vision's. It was Byrne who retconned this into being her own imagination creating the children, but if you read the original story it's just a very deliberately-created magical pregnancy.

The reason Tommy takes after Pietro is just that the writer of Young Avengers already had a young Vision, so he made Tommy a young Quicksilver.

I don’t see how hiring two white actors to play Wanda and Pietro is white-washing. Gypsies came in all different races and the twins have always been caucasian in the comics. So why is everyone saying it’s white-washing...

They weren't Romani until sometime in the '80s though. And they weren't even supposed to have been raised Romani until 1979. In the '60s and '70s they were white, like most characters.

Raise your hand if you’re legit worried about how Joss Whedon is going to use Wanda Maximoff in Avengers 2

Can he possibly use her worse than in the comics for the last 10 years? No? Then I'm not all that worried.

Are we all going to glaze over Elizabeth Olsen’s fetishisation of mental health in her interviews about her playing Scarlet Witch? For example: “She’s nuts, she’s crazy,” says Olsen of her character. “She has more things wrong with her than any character I’ve ever...

I don't trust Joss Whedon, but I do give him credit for putting these characters in the movie to begin with when nobody else at Marvel has given them any respect (they weren't even in the Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes cartoon). Also he's said he likes them because he read them in the '70s, which is good territory for both of them.

I'm not saying don't wince at Olsen saying stuff in interviews, but ultimately it's not up to her and anything that happens in the movie will be Whedon's fault. Actors always say the same things in interviews anyway. They have stock answers.

The way she talks...

Her interviews have suggested that this is based on comics her friends gave her to read, so this may be more about the impression she gets from the recent comics (since people her age rarely read the older comics) than the movie. I'm not going to sweat it until details leak out about the script and Whedon's plans. Right now it's just some 24 year-old actress who read the wrong comics.

I don't like that her choice of words about Wanda has been picked up on by reporters but I'm still looking forward to seeing her in the part. She seems very likable and she can act, and that's the combination this character deserves. Just do us a favor and don't talk about the comics your friends gave you...

People:” Joss Whedon is so racist he cast a white woman as Scarlet Witch who is Roma not white! Not just any white woman one with blonde hair and blue eyes! I don’t care about the actual performance she’s white!”

Don’t get me wrong I totally get where these people are coming...

The thing is, Wanda being Roma is a very late retcon. She was first established as having been raised by a Roma family in 1979, the same time as the Magneto retcon. Then later they established that her mother was Roma, giving her the Roma/Jewish parentage. But Whedon is basing the character more on the comics he read during the '70s when she was Marvel's most popular female character, and in those comics she was unambiguously white. I'm not saying they couldn't cast a minority actress, or shouldn't, I'm saying it's different from whitewashing because the character's Roma heritage is like her Magneto connection - a retcon that can be part of the character but doesn't have to be. Plus the Roma connection was added for the most stereotypical reasons, because comic writers thought Roma = magic and wanted her adoptive father to have magic powers because it suited the story. There are some unpleasant implications there.

I hope this doesn't sound impolite, but: normally when a character dies I'm willing to go along with it and believe there's a plan. But with Wanda it's different. She was not allowed in the comics for years on the basis of two events where she didn't even appear all that much. She's barely back, most writers aren't using her, she gets killed over a misunderstanding. I would love to be wrong, but I have trouble believing Marvel will do right by this character. She's used as a plot device so much.

Well, you’ll get no spoilers from me, I’m afraid.

Oh, spoilers I don't expect. Just venting passive-aggressively.

From Avengers #31

"I liked being an Avenger more than I ever said"

That moment when something on your dash makes you super sad, and you curse OP for bringing it up, and then…

"What I meant to say is, the Avengers will never forget us unless the writers use us out of character to screw up the X-Men or something. Then it'll take a movie to get us back in their good graces."

Avatar

House of M turned her into a self-hating mutant with daddy issues because she had to be for the ending to work. It has no connection to anything she was in the comics in the 40 years before that. If anything it seems to be based on her characterization in the cartoon X-Men Evolution. The "real" Wanda in the comics from 1964-2004 is proud of being a mutant, would never want to give Magneto his dream world, and certainly would not be mad about Magneto not paying enough attention to her and Pietro (she wanted him the hell out of their lives, before and after he turned out to be her father). House of M just makes no sense.

I like how hard Bendis is trying to rub it in that Wanda is totally over, man, and she's not coming back. First it's "she was actually crazy all this time you were reading her" and here it's "No, no, no, guys, she will never be back to normal, ever." And then he wonders why people think he hates that character...

Everybody complaining about Scarlet Witch being cast as a white woman and swear that it matters what her race is, forget that Nick Fury is white in the comics and Black Widow is Russian. These movies obviously aren’t canon to the comics. Seeing as...

Here's what I would add: their Roma connections were added at the same time they were retconned into being Magneto's kids. When Joss read the comics in the '70s (when Wanda was at her most popular) she had no Roma connections whatsoever, and even the original story about their parentage had them as white kids adopted by a Roma couple. And that story was based on the very unfortunate but typical comics idea of "Roma = magic." It's just not as simple as saying that these connections are a part of their characters or that they're supposed to be non-white. They really are basically white kids who happen to have been given some Roma connections.

So (part of) my personal headcanon for Disassembled is that this scene happened many times before, when Wanda would periodically remember her children, she would instinctively go to Agatha for help, and Agatha would give her tea and wipe her memory again.  But it kept coming back with increasing frequency and intensity until, on this occasion, Wanda wasn’t having any of this tea nonsense.  This is a useful no-prize, because, previous to Disassembled, Wanda did, in fact, remember her children on multiple occasions.

Alas, even that headcannon doesn't work because the point of Agatha's corpse being discovered was (supposed to be) that Agatha had been dead for years and every time Wanda talked to her she was just a crazy lady talking to a dead person and presumably wiping her own memory because Wanda was CRAZY ALL ALONG YOU GUYS. No, I think we'll have to stick with either "Doom Did It" or my personal preference, "Avengers ends with Geoff Johns taking his ball and going home."
