can someone explain the WAG and SAG-AFTRA strike to me like I'm a child. who does it affect, what can I as a consumer do to help, what does it mean for both current and future productions, etc. etc.

The writers' guild (WGA) and actors' guild (SAG-AFTRA) of America are both on strike as of today, July 13. Both guilds have good reason to believe the future of their industries rests on getting better contract protections against AI, against understaffing and underpaying, against laughably small residual payments, and more. (Read the WGA's demands and the studios' absurdly terrible responses here.)

This primarily affects American TV shows and films, though international productions and co-productions with any American guild members working on them (such as House of the Dragon) are also affected by work stoppages. For a more comprehensive list of overseas shows/films affected by the imminent actors' guild strike, see here.

What it means for actors and writers is that they will be picketing the studios and out of a job for the foreseeable future (previous WGA strikes lasted 100+ days; this one might be longer.)

Fans and the public can financially support both the striking writers/actors and the below-the-line crew and support staff affected by the strike via the Entertainment Community Fund or the Green Envelope Grocery Aid fund (more info on Twitter here, on Tumblr here.)

Neither the WGA nor SAG-AFTRA has officially called for a boycott of streaming services; the main issue right now is drying up studio pipelines of film/TV to really hit them where it hurts: running out of shows and films to premiere. Strikes are supposed to hurt, and when this fall rolls around and the networks/streaming services suddenly don't have anything new, that will hurt.

It's up to each individual to decide to cancel streaming services in solidarity or not. (Keep in mind that shows premiering before the fall were already in the can before the strike was called and might depend on viewership for another season. Also, if a future official boycott is called down the line, you may want to maintain your leverage for that.)

Current productions have been halted and future productions will be delayed until the strike is over. In the meantime, watch old stuff and vocally support the strikers via social media & to any IRL friends/family who may not know as much as you about the current state of the entertainment industry!

Quick reminder that July is disability pride month. Not “gay wrath month”.

When ableism is a massive issue in the queer community and most pride events aren’t accessible maybe y’all should. Idk. Try a bit fucking harder to educate urselves this July.

  1. some 8ish years now i reckon
  2. i have naturally acidic sweat. it's a family thing

we have already. They don't know exactly what is up with it, other than the sweat being slightly more acidic than normal and the acidic mantle being thicker and Way more acidic than normal, but it doesn't seem to have anything to do with acidosis. As far as we have tested, our family has had this since at least my great grandpa, and the guy lived to be 93 years old.

What the fuck.

little comic i made about me & my experience with being ace. planned to post this during pride but im really slow at drawing & writing lol (plus i had made some traditional sketches of this comic before drawing it out digitally) anyways it's nighttime & im tired so gooooodnight

I remember in my Arabic class we were going over the alphabet and the teacher was like there’s no ‘P’ etc and this white girl was like wait what but my names Paige and my teacher was like lol then we’d pronounce it as beige and she was so offended I’m crying thinking about it

One of my mom’s friends, Hugh, went to France and they had a lot of trouble pronouncing his name because the entire thing was silent.

salut je m'appelle [REDACTED]

lol when I lived in France my host family had a friend names Hugh. We saw him and his family a lot.

They pronounced it “oog” and I didn’t know until the day before I left France that his name was Hugh. I just thought he had some weird caveman nickname 😭

that is hands down the funniest addition to this post

I liked this post, scrolled for like another minute before I went “SHIT FUCK SHIT” and scrolled back to reblog it

I always reblog this one when I see it on my dash. When someone posts their own art, writing, or music here they are really hoping you will share it.

Comic #333: Glasses - Website links: Here! It’s me! Your Four-Eyes Friendo I’m near-sighted & can’t really see much beyond 5 feet in front of my face. Glasses are a necessity for doing just about anything in my life, but they remain separated from my self perception. Funny how that works!

When will people realise that Chronically ill people cannot predict how they will feel in the next few minutes, hours, days or months. I could wake up feeling fine and then feel like I’ve been hit by a truck within the hour. There are no warning signs.

"i wish i could do something 😔 / i wish the wga had a kickstarter or a gofundme, i would throw money at it" good news! it's amazing how you can literally go onto the wga strike website or the wgawest linktree from their twitter and find links to support writers and other workers affected by the strike

"Yeah, let's starve all our suppliers to death."

Writers are not working for studios. Studios are buying a product from writers. These people determined to starve their suppliers into submission are delusional and dead set on destroying their own industry.

Feed the writers! Pay their rents!

This week I am very happy to present a collaboration comic with my friend Chrissie, who has been generous in sharing with me her experiences of gender dynamics in a technical field, and then helping me craft them into a comic narrative.

Whenever I see Chrissie’s work I’m always impressed at the cool, creative things she does. When we were discussing this comic, she told me: “I find men persistently try to direct me lots now too, which is probably the biggest problem I consistently run into”, and my feelings around that fact are a terrible and familiar blend of frustration, sadness, and lack of surprise.

When we talk about the differences in how men and women are treated professionally, especially in technical fields, we are often dismissed with ‘everyone has to deal with that’, or ‘women need to demonstrate more confidence with their skills’, or ‘they’re just trying to be helpful’, or ‘it’s all in your head’.

It’s frustrating when we know something like this is happening, but we spend so much of our time actually trying to get people to believe that it’s a real phenomenon. I find narratives like Chrissie’s validating in that she has a comparative set of experiences and is like ‘oh yeah, people totally think I’m less competent at my job now. it’s totally a thing’.  So, can guys just believe us already and get on helping it not happen?

I work as a vet tech at an exotics clinic, since transitioning to male i get AT LEAST half as many questions as i use to from clients. Our older male clients specifically who could spend 15 min grilling me about the info i was giving them, dont give me shit anymore!!! I tell them their bird has x going on and the treatment is y/z, and theyre like “okay, thank you sir”

Intead of the “well, did the DOCTOR say that? I want his opinion.” Kind of shit

Maybe I’m too autistic for that, but I literally cannot grasp what the fuck must be going on in the heads of people who use services of a professional, THEN start doubting their qualifications/thinking that they know more about this field, and yet still fucking proceed to use said services.

Like, if your prejudices make you see other people as incapable of performing their work, maybe have the courtesy to Fuck Right Off?
