I’m all for going about queerness with the goal of not being able to be understood by outsiders but like. you’ve GOT to be normal about aro & ace people if you do. you can’t go on about being confusing to cishets for fun and then complain about ace & aro people who go about sex and romance and attraction in ways that don’t make sense to you.

supporting queerness that confuses others should include queerness that confuses YOU too even if you’re queer yourself.

So, apparently Finnish YouTuber and radio host Sini Laitinen (@ Papananaama on YouTube, @ nasty.napalm on TikTok and Instagram) provided commentary for the Finnish radio version of ESC 2023. Just like most things she has provided commentary on, this too went off the rails very quickly and to very hilarious effect.

Things people don’t talk about enough from the Hunger Games:

  1. Many of Katniss’ strongest allies are women that are over looked by others (Madge, Rue, Mags, Wiress)
  2. While Katniss has a strained relationship with her mother, her mother is never demonized. Katniss recognizes the trauma her mother went through and was willing to try to improve their relationship in CF
  3. The rebellion didn’t start with the berries. The rebellion started when Katniss showed compassion towards a dying, black girl that the world had already written off as unimportant
  4. One of the beauty trends in the capitol that Katniss finds odd is the shaving of body hair. When her leg hair grows back in CF, she expresses comfort in it.
  5. Katniss’ character arc throughout the series is her understanding of who the enemy is. It isn’t the rich people in district 12, or the other tributes, or the other districts, or the people in the capitol. It’s the government and it’s Snow.
  6. Katniss never wanted another hunger games with the kids of the capitol. In that meeting she recognizes Coin’s commitment to perpetuating the cycle of violence. She votes in favor of it to cover her plans of killing Coin.
  7. The violence in the books is SUPPOSED to feel random and unfair. Prim being reaped was supposed to be against all odds because in the real world, violence is indiscriminate.
  8. Gale is a victim too and was not solely responsible for the death of Prim. He spent the first two books feeling helpless as he watched people he loved be put in danger and suffer. Coin offered him a way to regain control. At the end of the day, Gale is only 18 and doesn’t realize the depth of the games being played.
  9. Katniss is great with kids and actually enjoys being around them. She says the only reason she doesn’t want them is because she can’t imagine them being put in the hunger games. Her having children in the epilogue is a sign of her healing and finally feeling safe

I deeply admire Harrison Ford's unfailing commitment to taking beloved characters out with him every time he leaves a franchise

when companies overspend on advertising they think they're reaching a wider audience when in reality they are showing me the same fucking unskippable ad enough times to make me associate their brand with fantasies of anticapitalist terrorism

Good post OP

Denounce gender roles but respect gender identity.

Denounce gender roles but respect gender identity.

I think the reason so many LOTR ripoffs fail is because they make their Aragorn analogue the main character, when the entire point of Aragorn is that he’s “the person the villains think is the main character, but is Not.”

Aragorn seems like a traditional King Arthur style hero— he has huge Main Character Energy because he’s supported by destiny, by bloodline, by all these magic artifacts and prophecies, and etc etc. Frodo and Sam are Just Some Guys. Aragorn recognizes that Sauron understandably thinks he’s the main hero of this story ….and he pretends to believe it too, spending the entire series using himself as a diversion to prevent Sauron from seeing Frodo and Sam.

Aragorn’s whole thing is that knows he seems like the Main Hero of this legend to people who don’t know better —- but he also knows that he isn’t, and that his role is just to keep Sauron’s eye on him in order to protect the people around him.

And it works! Sauron is so fixated on defeating his Legendary Destined Archenemy with Extreme Main Character Energy that he completely overlooks the two ordinary little guys who were the real threat to him all along.

Ppl dont seem to realise that “only perceivably queer people should have access to queer spaces and support” and “nobody is obligated to out themselves to you and nobody needs to provide proof of their sexuality/identity” CANNOT coexist.

People are very quick to say “nobody should ever be forced out of the closet, there is no one way to be queer” but then throw a fit when someone who isnt visibly gay plays a gay character or when someone who isnt officially out acts in a ~queer way~.

Edit: Yes ofc its frustrating to see straight people get applauded for portraying queer characters and queer people should have more control about queer narratives that straight people do, but yall have to let go of the idea that “sexuality unknown” automatically means “straight by default”. Thats literally heteronormativity.

Yes, harmful and stereotypical portrayals should be examined, but some of yall start frothing at the mouth over the possibility that the person delivering a perfectly harmless portrayal of a queer person might not be queer themselves.

Its also telling how yall will usually only go after the ‘easier’ targets. You bullied kit connor into outing himself bc he dared to play a bisexual boy while keeping his own identity private, but i have yet to see the same energy for cate blanchett, taika waititi, etc who have also played queer characters despite not being openly queer. Bc its not really about keeping the community safe, is it? Youre doing shit like this bc it makes you feel powerful and righteous.

If you care about all queer stories being “own voices” stories, thats your decision and a valid way to feel. But dont kid yourself into thinking youre making the lgbt community safer by forcing actors to out themselves.
