The 1st season of TNG was just finding its feet and had some real stinkers of episodes, but I don't think Jonathan Frakes gets enough credit for fucking OWNING Riker's fashion choices.

Look at that man. Pants strapped to emphasize his package, shiny fabric, tits out. Jonathan is conveying EXACTLY what Riker would in such an outfit, which is "I am the sexiest motherfucker in this room." Not the least bit of self-consciousness about it.

That is fucking amazing. Fucking icon.

Star Trek: The Beginning script

Back in 2006, Erik Jendresen was tasked with writing a movie about the Earth/Romulan war, originally mentioned in "Balance of Terror". It starred Tiberius Chase, a hotshot fighter pilot in the United Earth Space Navy who is heavily implied to be an ancestor of James T. Kirk. The film would have re-used some sets, locations and characters (Shran!) from Star Trek: Enterprise but been it's own thing. Archer and Enterprise are mentioned but not seen. It was to be the first part of a trilogy.

The movie was cancelled in favour of the JJ Abrams reboot. IMO the movie we got was better, but this is a fascinating look at what might have been.

Notes:
  • Romulan drone ships from ENT S4 are featured prominently
  • The United Earth Space Navy are space Top Gun fighter pilots, and the UESN is about to merge with the expanding Starfleet
  • Shran cameo!
  • The Romulans have a massive fleet heading towards Earth. It's on a course that keeps it hidden behind the moon, which is classicly awful Trek science
  • Captain Hernandez and Columbia NX-02 appear briefly
  • Romulans are on an ethnic cleansing mission against their Vulcan cousins, and the war happens because Earth refuses to surrender their Vulcans to the Romulan forces
  • Tiberius' family are part of a Terra Prime-style group who have an arctic base where they're hiding a nuke
  • Tiberius falls for Penelope Gardener, an Admiral's daughter from Iowa. Admiral Gardener was mentioned on ENT but never seen
  • Tiberius Chase (who is either Jim Kirk's grandfather or great-grandfather) steals a Daedalus-class warp 7 ship, the USS Spartan
  • The Spartan technical specs are stright from the Starfleet Museum fan site
  • Chase steals the nuke from the xenophobic group
  • And sets course for Romulus, presumably leading to a very reimagined version of Spock's "primitive atomic weapons" line from "Balance of Terror". To be continued...
