Cantankerous lady of a certain age. I don't have much to say, but I do have much to share. Topics include: mental health, LGBTQ+, figure skating, fan fiction, ADHD, to name a few. Non-binary||she/they

Look, I'm going to be honest, I don't care whether people feeding other fans' fanfiction into AI is "legal" or "illegal".

What it is, is rude, entitled, and disrespectful of your fellow fans.

And it is also going to make people stop posting fanfiction because their work is being stolen and given to ai by the very people they write it for free for. Try and tell me it’s worth it.

The Reddit Blackout, #196, And Being New to Tumblr

okay i've seen a lot of people in the past ~24 hours or so confused by everything going on with Reddit & Tumblr from both sides - people new to tumblr who don't know how to use it, and tumblr users who don't know what's going on with reddit and why many of its users have joined up here i know this isn't really related to my blog but fun fact about me: i was up until recently a very active reddit user and even mod a subreddit, but I've also been on tumblr for about 3 years now on different accounts, so I think I can see pretty well from both sides of this and explain what's going on this post will be split in 2 sections: what happened with reddit (and what #196 means), and a guide for new users

1. What The Hell Is Going On With Reddit?

The thing that's caused all this ruckus is a major change to Reddit's API, which is what Reddit provides to people so they can pull directly from Reddit to make third-party apps or tools.

The change is that Reddit is changing its previously free API to be paid. Which on its own kinda sucks for developers, but it's not unexpected. They need to make money somehow, right?

The problem is that the API pricing is WAY TOO FUCKING EXPENSIVE. The developer of the most popular 3rd party Reddit app, Apollo, says it will cost him $20 million a year to continue running the app as normal.

Essentially, this pricing forces almost everything third-party to shut down, which causes 3 major problems:

  1. Third-party apps cannot keep running, which sucks for normal users because Reddit's official app is awful. It's slow, its video player is a thing of nightmares, it doesn't have many useful features third-party developers have made.
  2. It sucks even more for visually impaired users because they can't use the official Reddit app at all. Reddit's official app does not work with iOS's native text-to-speech function. Third party apps, on the other hand, often do. So Reddit is forcing blind users away.
  3. Third-party moderator tools cannot keep running, which sucks for moderators because many rely on these tools to properly moderate their subreddits. And moderators are often necessary, because without them subreddits get banned and hate speech and even CSA can often run rampant.

So you see why this change is bad.

Reddit users were PISSED.

So over the past week and a half or so, they have been working on organizing a site-wide blackout. The majority of the most active subreddits have now gone private. Some are only doing it for 48 hours, others (such as r/196) are doing it indefinitely.

That's why you can't access most of Reddit right now, and that's why many users have come here.

You're probably still wondering, though - what is this #196?

Well, as you may guess, it's connected to that subreddit r/196 I just mentioned. r/196 is a subreddit which only has one rule: every time you visit, you must post before you leave.

That's it, that's the subreddit.

The thing about r/196 that set it apart from most other subreddits - and what lends the subreddit's users perfectly to Tumblr - is that it was dominated by queer and leftist users.

So now they've come here and set up shop in #196 and r/196 so they can continue their merry little shitposting.

There's a ton of lore related to r/196, actually, but this is already a long tumblr post and quite frankly I cannot be bothered to write about it at the moment.

2. I'm Here From Reddit, What Now?

Hello there, random new user. As a double-citizen of Reddit and Tumblr, let me show you around this place.

First off, there are some other people who are better at explaining that I am who have made some really helpful things. Watch this Strange Aeons video as a guide to Tumblr culture and functionality and read this post which directly compares Reddit and Tumblr.

Assuming you've done that, here's some additional advice of my own:

  • Do you miss sorting subreddits by top of all time/the year/the month? Well, you can do something very similar with tags! If you go to a tag at the top of the screen you can select top, and then at the dropdown that says "all time" you can select different time periods! Even 6 months, which Reddit hasn't ever had.
  • Tumblr has a lot of cool customization features! Even outside your icon/banner/bio, you can change you blog colors and on desktop you can have an html theme (which has its own thriving community here). That customization is part of what sets Tumblr apart from everywhere else - I think you'll enjoy playing with it.
  • Notes will probably confuse you at first. Unlike the different numbers for upvotes and comments, notes combines the total number of likes, reblogs, and replies into the same number.
  • Outside of organizing your own blog, when making your own posts tags are what help other people find your post. Use them! But don't abuse them, because then people will just block you.
  • There are three ways of people finding your post: if someone follows you, if someone follows the tag(s) assigned to your post, and if someone is just scrolling through the tag(s) assigned to your post (and also the secret 4th way no one uses, which is finding it on the trending page, but even if people did use it no one will find your post initially that way)
  • tumblr is no longer The Discourse Website. And unlike what Reddit wants you to believe for some reason, it is very much alive still. Most of the people seeking fights have moved to Twitter (though some have also moved back here again). You will not get any brownie points for being a dipshit like you do on some subreddits.

So there, welcome to the hellsite (affectionate), you'll pick up on all the in-jokes eventually, for now just try not to be a nuisance and soon enough this'll be your new internet home.

I mentioned it before but it is very striking to me that as of the last tumblr update, there are now no (0) ways to open someone's desktop blog from a dashboard post. like you can't access the url dot tumblr dot com page at all now unless you already know it exists. imo this seems like a canary that personal blog pages will be gone very shortly, which would suck, since to me that is one of the only good things this site has going for it

Correction: you can still open the top-level URL.tumblr.com link from someone's avatar on the dashboard (so, someone you follow). Actually, I should specify. Here's a post on the dashboard with seven ways to access a post:

  1. Followed blog avatar: Hyperlink, opens in new tab, to URL1.tumblr.com.
  2. Reblogger URL: Hyperlink, opens in new tab, to tumblr.com/URL1.
  3. Reblogged-from URL: Same as #2, but to tumblr.com/URL2.
  4. Uhh... hitbox?: Whatever this is can't be opened in a new tab and doesn't even look like a link, but clicking on it opens the dashboard view of tumblr.com/URL1/post.
  5. Copy link under meatball menu: Not a hyperlink, but copies to the clipboard tumblr.com/URL1/post?trackinginfo.
  6. OP URL: Same as #2 and #3, but to tumblr.com/URL3.
  7. Other... hitbox... thing: Same as #4, but to tumblr.com/URL3/post.

So you can access the custom blog, but not a post on a custom blog, despite the plethora of links. Very annoying.

Avatar

No, here’s the worst part: you can indeed get the link of the post you are clicking on and view it on the person’s custom blog!

IT’S JUST ON THE FUCKING MEATBALL MENU TIMESTAMP INSTEAD FOR SOME REASON I DON’T UNDERSTAND THIS SITE

Red Heart Elephant

Elephant was well loved for many years. So well loved, that when his person outgrew him, his person's mom put him in a box of keepsakes and stored him safely away in... an attic. And he became mostly a memory in his person's mind. Fast forward almost 6 decades and his person was going through boxes of her mom's things and found Elephant! As she said, he'd seen better days, but she had fond memories of their time together and hoped he could be restored and/or rejuvenated. Here are a couple of the diagnosis photos she sent:

As you can see, Elephant had lost his hearing, and had vision issues in one eye. He was a bit discolored from age, had a bit of a slump from stuffing compression, and had lost his tail. He also had a bit of balding, some small wounds, and his internal wire structure was bent out of shape.

His person wanted to think about the treatment options (spa, transplants, etc). She eventually opted to give him new ears, new felt around his original eyes, a new tail, new spa, a small heart transplant for his largest bald spot, a new tongue tip, wound repair, and wire adjustment.

She found this image of one of his relatives, as a reference, but didn't want the red tail with a bell. She opted for a tail to match his torso, and with a string tip.

She also wanted a bit more decorative ears, and so found a nice red minky with white hearts that she sent with him to be used for his inner ears.

So Elephant flew in from Texas, and started, as many patients do, with his spa:

His old eyes were out for the spa not so he could hide, but because, as you can see, the old felt had bled onto his fur (that just happens over time). You can also see he's losing a bit of the antique browning he had gotten from his time in the attic.

Next was restuffing him (once he dried) and of course he got a little heart. I used a lighter fabric because to match his lighter fur.

Next was choosing the fabric for his outer ears and tail. There were many options, because he was kind of a creamy, tan, gray color... his original color was probably a pale gray.

His person made her choice, and surgery proceeded. Hearing restored with new ears, a new tail, new red felt for his eyes to match his inner ears, a small heart patch for his bald spot.

Once he was better, and feeling himself again, he was ready to fly home:

He flew home to Texas and his person was so happy! She sent me his whole story (turns out his name wasn't Elephant, it was "Lel-Ephant") and he hadn't just been a childhood playmate, but also a companion purchased to keep her company during a hospital stay, who then proceeded to be carried everywhere until she started school. He would be left in the rain, and at neighbors, but always came home.

Now both he and his person have survived many years apart, and their own additional challenges, but can finally share their lives together again.

man this is like the worst year for tech and websites

discord is forcing a username change that no one wants, twitch nearly banned sponsored streams, imgur is banning NSFW and removing old pics, reddit is restricting their API usage and killing off all mobile apps, apple introducing some shitty overpriced AR headset, the amount of fuckups twitter is doing i cant even count on my own two hands its all becoming too much i hate technology i hate you silicon valley

tumblr has been desperately pushing its merch and digital cosmetics with flashing gifs and popup ads. some of these products feature user-made jokes & content, repackaged without compensation or credit. tumblr live cannot be turned off for longer than a week, and might’ve inadvertently revealed underage users’ locations to strangers. flashy promotions (like the y2k thing) are getting more invasive and obnoxious, and might even trigger epilepsy in some cases. the mobile app remains barely functional, and plays loud ads unprompted half the time when i open it. pornbots remain rampant, and cleanup on your end now often involves scrolling past actual porn gifs in order to block them. one of the tumblr staff members is a die-hard potterhead. social media platforms are all corporate products. they’re all run by inept businessfolk who will go to bizarre and troubling lengths to try and squeeze a profit out of your favorite website. they’re not your friends. tumblr is no exception.

things that made me stop wanting to die that require no effort whatsoever

  • change the color used to highlight text on your laptop
  • move the pictures on your wall
  • stack whatever clutter is in your room into piles even if you don’t have time to clean it all
  • slightly vary your commute, even just by one street
  • change where you sit and scroll aimlessly on your phone even if it’s only to the chair in your room instead of your bed
  • drink water or juice out of a wine glass in the morning because nothing is real
  • shower with the lights off, without music
  • buy $3 flowers at trader joe’s—they look bad next to the more expensive ones but they look so good in your room
  • start typing things you don’t post into your notes. your thoughts can be worth documenting even if you don’t deem them worth sharing
  • wake up super early just once. you don’t have to make it a habit it’s just extra satisfying to go to bed that night
  • listen to the entirety of your favorite album from 2015

Almost all of these are about variety. Humans need stimulation! We need enrichment! We literally cannot do the same thing every day!

The other day I was feeling miserable, so I hopped on a bus and rode it all the way back to where I’d started, and my brain, which had finally had some proper stimulation via new environments, was suddenly ready to go again!

This is why taking walks/drives and trying new hobbies are good for you! Don’t turn yourself into a sad zoo animal! You need some pumpkins to roll around in your enclosure!

Most libraries in the US are free only to people in the library's taxing district. Who will be able to get a QLL card? Is it a subscription library? I am watching with great eagerness - I can't wait to add a QLL card to my Libby account :)

Hello! you're absolutely right, and that's partially due to how public libraries are usually funded through local taxes. That's one of the unique things about QLL, since we're a 501(c)3 non-profit and fully funded through donations, our library will be accessible to anyone across the US* who signs up for a digital card with us! We've already met with Overdrive/Libby to confirm that we can do this.

*we are currently limited to the United States because of how ebook licensing works. It would be exciting to expand in the future, but we're just getting started.

cutting child porn from ao3 is not going to be a ‘slippery slope’ to full blown ‘censorship’, you guys are just pedophiles

Avatar

There is no child porn on AO3. That is a false statement perpetuated by pro censorship groups in order to promote their repressive goals.

Child pornography is pornographic material (images, videos etc) of actual children. That is why it is illegal to produce, transmit, or possess. Because it involves the sexual abuse, assault and exploitation of ACTUAL REAL CHILDREN.

AO3 is a US website that abides by US law. US law prohibits any involvement whatsoever with child porngraphy -  possession, creation, transmission etc. If there was child pornography on AO3 not only would the website be taken down but everyone involved would be in prison. This has not happened because there is no child pornography on the site.

There are some fictional stories on AO3 that include fictional sex scenes between fictional characters who are underage. But that is not child porgraphy and is legal. Just the way Game of Thrones has sex scenes involving underage characters but that’s legal because in real life the actors and actresses are all legal adults. It is legal because no actual children are harmed.

Actual children are harmed though when pro censorship people pull stunts like trying to report AO3 to the FBI for child pornography. While these complaints did not result in any actions against AO3 because there was no child pornography it means that time that could have been used to investigate real claims about real child pornography that put real children in harms way was wasted. And that hurts children.

But these people don’t care about children. They don’t even care about banning fictional subject matter that depicts underage sex. If they did they would be campaigning equally hard against HBO for airing Game of Thrones and George RR Martin for writing A Song of Ice and Fire both of which include underage sex scene as well as other dark subject material like rape. What they really care about it claiming the moral high ground to justify harassment campaigns and censorship of marginalized communities.

bruh don’t hide this in the tags

bc bullies choose smaller targets

A woman whose epilepsy was greatly improved by an experimental brain implant was devastated when, just two years after getting it, she was forced to have it removed due to the company that made it going bankrupt.

Specifically, because she couldn't afford to buy the implant from the company. They basically took her implant back to recoup their losses. This is what happens when you privatize healthcare and health research. The group providing her with this implant should not have been able to go bankrupt in the first place, let alone repossess her implant to pay off their debts.

This is what disabled people mean when we say that cyberpunk horror is just a reality for us. This woman was literally forced to undergo a surgery because she couldn't pay to keep the implant already inside her brain. How long till companies start repossessing pacemakers and transplants?

Durable medical equipment companies in the US already do this.

DMEs will repossess your medical devices if you rent it through them and lose your insurance or your living situation. This includes feeding tube pumps and higher value mobility devices like motorized wheelchairs. I specify living situation because even with insurance they see homelessness as a liability to the medical equipment.

They have no qualms with letting you die and in the case of feeding tubes, they have no issues with letting you starve a bit faster.

DO NOT ENGAGE WITH BLUE CHECKS

Elon Musk is paying blue checks for ad revenue in the replies of their Tweets now. He is only paying "verified" accounts for this, even if the account in question has hundreds of thousands of followers.

Do not reply, quote-tweet, or retweet any posts made by a user with a blue check.

Spread the word. Quit Twitter.

Pride needs more fun activities that you can enjoy while drinking or sober. There should be ring toss booths and ski ball and other carnival type stuff.

Pride already has such a fun county fair energy we should lean into that

Instead of a quilting bee we have a flag making contest. You have to use an established Pride flag of some kind as your base but from there you get to go hogwild.

The GOP wonders why young people (and others) don't want to vote for them. Some wise scribe assembled this list.

1.) Your Reagan-era “trickle-down economics” strategy of tax breaks for billionaires that you continue to employ to this day has widened the gap between rich and poor so much that most of them will never be able to own a home, much less earn a living wage.

2.) You refuse to increase the federal minimum wage, which is still $7.25 an hour (since 2009). Even if it had just kept up with inflation, it would be $27 now. You’re forcing people of all ages but especially young people to work multiple jobs just to afford basic necessities.

3.) You fundamentally oppose and want to kill democracy; have done everything in your power to restrict access to the ballot box, particularly in areas with demographics that tend to vote Democratic (like young people and POC). You staged a fucking coup the last time you lost.

4.) You have abused your disproportionate senate control over the last three decades to pack the courts with religious extremists and idealogues, including SCOTUS—which has rolled back rights for women in ways that do nothing but kill more women and children and expand poverty.

5.) You refuse to enact common sense gun control laws to curb mass shootings like universal background checks and banning assault weapons; subjecting their entire generation to school shootings and drills that are traumatizing in and of themselves. You are owned by the NRA.

6.) You are unequivocally against combatting climate change to the extent that it’s as if you’ve made it your personal mission to ensure they inherit a planet that is beyond the point of no return in terms of remaining habitable for the human race beyond the next few generations.

7.) You oppose all programs that provide assistance to those who need it most. Your governors refused to expand Medicaid even during A PANDEMIC. You are against free school lunches, despite it being the only meal that millions of children can count on to actually receive each day

8.) You are banning books, defunding libraries, barring subject matter, and whitewashing history even more in a fascistic attempt to keep them ignorant of the systemic racism that this nation was literally founded upon and continues to this day in every action your party takes.

9.) You oppose universal healthcare and are still trying to repeal the ACA and rip healthcare from tens of millions of Americans and replace it with nothing. You are against lowering the cost of insulin and prescription drugs that millions need simply to LIVE/FUNCTION in society.

10.) You embrace white nationalists, Neo-Nazis, and other groups that are defined by their intractable racism, xenophobia, bigotry, and intolerance. You conspired with these groups on January 6th to try to overthrow the U.S. government via domestic terrorism that KILLED PEOPLE.

11.) You oppose every bill aimed at making life better for our nation’s youth; from education to extracurricular and financial/nutritional assistance programs. You say you want to “protect the children” while you elect/nominate pedophiles and attack trans youth and drag queens.

12.) You pretend to be offended by “anti-semitism” while literally supporting, electing, and speaking at events organized by Nazis. You pretend to hate “cancel culture” despite the fact that you invented it and it’s basically all you do.

13.) Every word you utter is a lie. You are the party of treason, hypocrisy, crime, and authoritarianism. You want to entrench rule by your aging minority because you know that you have nothing to offer young voters and they will never support you for all these reasons and more.

14.) You’re so hostile to even the notion of helping us overcome the mountain of debt that millions of us are forced to take on just to pay for our post K-12 education that you are suing to try to prevent a small fraction of us from getting even $10,000 in loan forgiveness.

15.) You opened the floodgates of money into politics via Citizens United; allowing our entire system of government to become a cesspool of corruption, crime, and greed. You are supposed to represent the American people whose taxes pay your salary but instead cater to rich donors.

16.) You respond to elected representatives standing in solidarity with their constituents to protest the ONGOING SLAUGHTER of children in schools via shootings by EXPELLING THEM FROM OFFICE & respond to your lack of popularity among young people by trying to raise the voting age.

17.) You impeach Democratic presidents over lying about a BJ but refuse to impeach (then vote twice to acquit) a guy whose entire “administration” was an international crime syndicate being run out of the WH who incited an insurrection to have you killed.

18.) You steal Supreme Court seats from democrats to prevent the only black POTUS we’ve ever had from appointing one and invent fake precedents that you later ignore all to take fundamental rights from Americans; and even your “legitimate” appointments consist of people like THIS (sub-thread refuting CJ Roberts criticisms of people attacking SCOTUS’ legitimacy).

19.) You support mass incarceration even for innocuous offenses or execution by cop for POC while doing nothing but protect rich white criminals who engage in such things as tax fraud, money laundering, sex trafficking, rape/sexual assault, falsifying business records, etc.

20.) You are the reason we can’t pass:—Universal background checks—An assault weapons ban—The ‘For the People/Freedom to vote’ Act or John Lewis Voting Rights Act—The ERA & Equality Act—The Climate Action Now Act—The (Stopping) Violence Against Women Act—SCOTUS expansion.

21.) You do not seek office to govern, represent, or serve the American people. You seek power solely for its own sake so you can impose your narrow-minded puritanical will on others at the expense of their most fundamental rights and freedoms like voting and bodily autonomy.

22.) Ok, last one. You are trying to eliminate social security and Medicare that tens of millions of our parents rely on and paid into their entire lives. And you did everything to maximize preventable deaths from COVID leaving millions of us in mourning.

someone: hey I noticed this thing you did in your writing!

me, kicking my feet up flirtatiously: oh??? do you want to hear my thoughts on why I did that? do you want a play-by-play of the language choices in every related sentence? do you want an exhaustive breakdown of The Themes???

I find there is a 50/50 chance of this situation being:

a) Wow, I'm really glad you noticed that! I spent ages considering the implications and how it ties into the themes. Please let me talk to you for three hours straight about my thought process.

or

b) Erm... that thing... yeah... that was definitely a deliberate thing... I absolutely meant for that thing to be there honest

Fandom is so different now and it’s becoming un-fun with how quickly shit moves.

I just want to enjoy things. I don’t want to have to play a game of Artist-Race that seems to be afoot lately.

Ya’ll eat up fandoms, leave artists and writers bone dry and then move on so fucking quickly then fucking wonder where all the Good Fandom Stuff is.

Idk Maybe cherish some things for longer. Reblog stuff. Interact with people. Comment and share.

Fandom is Capitalism now and I’m not being nuanced.

people also seem obsessed with only Doing Fandom about currently active works?

“oh, I’m so sad that show ended! I really miss the fandom!” who said you have to leave, coward
