10 Tips For the Beginner Witch
1. Don’t rush into things:
Take the time to explore and learn about witchcraft, its traditions, and practices. Resist the urge to jump into more advanced practices or take on too much at once. Start small and build your knowledge and skills gradually.
2. Don’t believe everything you read online:
Be mindful of where you get your information about witchcraft. Do thorough research and cross-check multiple sources before adopting any beliefs or practices. Remember that not everything online is reliable or accurate.
3. Don’t compare yourself to others:
Each person’s journey in witchcraft is unique, and it’s important to focus on your own growth and path. Don’t compare yourself to others or try to measure up to someone else’s standards. Embrace your own journey and celebrate your progress.
4. Don’t neglect self-care:
Witchcraft can be emotionally and mentally taxing, so prioritize self-care. Take time for yourself to recharge, meditate, and do things that bring you joy. Pay attention to your physical and emotional health and practice self-compassion.
5. Respect nature and the elements:
Witchcraft often involves working with the elements and nature, so treat them with respect. Avoid harming wildlife, littering, or engaging in practices that harm the environment. Build a relationship with nature and the elements based on respect, gratitude, and reciprocity.
6. Don’t force your beliefs on others:
Witchcraft is a personal practice, and everyone has their own beliefs and experiences. Respect the beliefs of others, and don’t try to force your own beliefs on anyone else. Be open-minded and respectful of different perspectives and approaches to witchcraft.
7. Ask for help:
The witchcraft community is a supportive and knowledgeable community. Don’t hesitate to ask for help, guidance, or advice from more experienced practitioners. Join online forums or local groups to connect with others and learn from their experiences.
8. Balance your practice with mundane responsibilities:
Witchcraft can be a fulfilling and meaningful part of your life, but don’t neglect your everyday responsibilities. Make sure to balance your practice with your job, family, and other obligations. Remember that taking care of yourself and your responsibilities is an important part of a healthy witchcraft practice.
9. Keep a grimoire or book of shadows:
Keeping a grimoire or book of shadows is a valuable tool for any beginner witch. It allows you to record your experiences, insights, and practices, and serves as a reference for your ongoing learning and development.
10. Embrace experimentation:
Witchcraft is a creative and experimental practice, so embrace your inner curiosity and explore different practices and techniques. Try out different forms of divination, herbalism, meditation, or ritual practices to find what resonates with you. Remember that experimentation and playfulness are key components of a healthy and dynamic witchcraft practice.
As you embark on your enchanting journey as a beginner witch, remember to take your time and savor each magical moment. Witchcraft is a unique and personal practice that is meant to be explored and experienced with joy and curiosity. Remember to approach your craft with wonder and gratitude for the beauty of nature and the elements. May your path be filled with enchantment and wonder as you explore the mystical world of witchcraft.

- Recommended Reading & Book Suggestions
Hi, everyone! I spent years living as a closet witch and wishing I had more freedom to practice. Nowadays my living situation is different which allows me to do things I couldn’t before, but I know that there are many witches out there who are still struggling with this so I decided to share some tips on how to practice in the broom closet
Keep in mind these are all suggestions, you don’t need to have an altar, a book of shadows, practice divination, etc if you don’t want to
Altars
(Disclaimer: you don’t need an altar to practice, but in case you still desire to have one)
- Inside a jewelry box
- Shoe box
- Tin can
- Matchbox
- In a video game such as animal crossing, the sims, minecraft, etc
- The #SelfCare app has a little altar in which you can decorate with crystals, herbs and tarot cards
- Notebook (then add the items by drawing them or maybe making collages)
- Make/buy a little terrarium (artificial or real)
- I’ve heard of people using plant vases as altars as well
Divination
(In case you can’t buy tarot decks/runes/etc)
- Make your own tarot cards/oracle cards (it can be a little tiring but it’s what I did when I couldn’t buy my own)
- Use playing cards as minor arcanas to read tarot
- Pendulums (doesn’t have to be an actual crystal pendulum as you see on witchy stores, anything on a string will do)
- Make runes out of seashells, rocks, clay, etc
- Flip a coin for yes and no questions
- Give dice divination a try
Deity Worship/Work
- Wear jewelry that reminds you of them (ex: sun necklace for apollo, moon ring for artemis, etc)
- Wear their associated colors
- Practice devotional acts such as reading about them, praying, drawing something for them, writing them a letter, something related to your deity’s domains
- Keep a notebook in which you can write their myths/domains/associations/etc or write prayers/poems, make drawings of things they like, etc
- Keep a small altar
- Watch movies that remind you of them
- Play video games associated with their domains
- Study something they have domain over
- Make them a playlist
- Make them a pinterest board
- Make a devotional blog
- Light a candle in their honor (it’s ok if you can only use LED candles)
- Keep something associated with them on your desk/shelf
- Keep a crystal associated with them near you
- Get a small statuette/toy of one of their sacred animals to represent them (on your shelf/desk, on a small altar if you have one, etc)
- Make a little deity jar and keep it near you
- Have a devotional plant for them
- Spend time in nature in their honor
- Take care of yourself
Book of Shadows
- Notebook
- Notes app
- Google docs or google keep
- Tumblr blog (either private or public, up to you)
- Somewhere on your phone/computer
Simple Practices
- Enchant your jewelry with intention
- Use color correspondence in your clothes/makeup
- Meditating
- Open your windows to cleanse your room
- Keep crystals around you
- Physically clean your space
- Take showers/baths with the intention of cleansing yourself
- Try practicing some kitchen magic if you cook
- Enchant your food/drink
- Make sigils
- Keep plants in your space associated with your intention (ex: protection, creativity, etc)
- Keep in mind that you’re not any less of a witch for not being able to do certain things, your practice is still valid

A neurodivergent witch's guide to starting a grimoire 🌿✨️
I remember when I was first starting out with building a grimoire and getting frustrated with how few resources there are on what a grimoire is supposed to be. I wanted clear directions and examples of what to include, but I mostly found YouTubers giving vague descriptions and repeating over and over again that it's extremely personal and private so they wouldn't say anything specific. As a neurodivergent person, it was very frustrating to try to figure out what to do from that. It took me a while to figure out what my own specifics were, so for any beginner witches out there, here are some specific ideas for starting off! Once you get more used to it, it'll get easier and easier to figure out what you do and don't want to include.
- I'd recommend researching sigils and creating one to protect your grimoire; I placed mine on the second page after I dedicated the notebook for it, but you can put it wherever you feel like
- Dates of moon cycles/information on how they affect your practice
- Wheel of the year/sabbats if you celebrate them
- Record rituals for sabbats if you choose to do anything for them, that way you have a reference for next year
- Information on the elements- earth, air, fire, water, and/or spirit depending on your practice
- Information on herbs or crystals you have- I like to print out pictures to include with the correspondences and leave space to write down specific things I use them for
- Also, a quick reference list of ways you can care for individual crystals will be very helpful if you use them! Pay extra attention to which ones are sensitive to sun or water, it'll save you crystals later on
- Basics of tarot, runes, or other divination methods
- Color correspondences!
- Information on zodiac signs; I printed out my star chart and put it in
- When you do spellwork, write down everything you did and date it. Later you can come back and update whether it worked, what the effects were, and tweak it if necessary- basically treat it like a magic recipe book
- A grimoire is not the same as a journal- if you want to write down personal reflections on meditation or your emotional experiences, I would suggest using a separate notebook for those things.
While I understand why people are so hesitant to show their grimoires, I have no qualms with showing a few pages for example purposes. However, I would suggest that you don't share anything that is personalized to your craft to others unless you can 100% guarantee that they won't cause you harm with it.
The only reason I'm ok with putting pictures on here is because they're full of basic information that anyone with Google could find and nothing that's specific to me.
With that being said, here are a few examples from my own grimoire as a reference!
