So frequently the complaint I see about the Dems is "they don't do anything/they don't do enough" but I never see the people who say this really examin why, they just say "it's cuz the Dems don't really care" and ignore the elephants in the room who are blocking/limiting the Dems efforts

As you mentioned, to get some real major progress, the Dems need control of both chambers of congress, more seats in those chambers, and the presidency, Because that's just how it works, one chamber, simple/small majorities and the presidency isn't enough, and to have more seats we need to get out and vote

Don't like that the system is this way? Me neither, but that's how it is, and you won't change it by refusing to vote, and the best way to change it is the same way we get major progress above, you vote, you get the Presidency, 60+ seats in the senate and a house majority of several dozen seats

To me, honestly, the biggest thing Tumblr has going for itself is the fact that no one uses it.

Originally I was thinking, in terms of "why do I use Tumblr and not other sites?" that the thing going for it is that it's a Post Anonymous Bullshit site. And this is true, and important, but also Tumblr isn't the only Post Anonymous Bullshit site.

I think the key power that Tumblr holds over me is that it's the Post Anonymous Bullshit site that no one uses.

And the reason that's so clutch is because of how much safety it adds. No matter what kind of office or acquaintance small-talk spirals into the direction of social media, which, perhaps in an unthinking moment, causes you to mention you use Tumblr. Even if your conversation partner acts interested in this detail, they won't follow you. Twitter? Tiktok? Fuck man, the person could whip out their phone on the spot and look you up. Tumblr? No way in hell. They'd have to download an app. Make an account. Check it regularly? Just to see you posting "happy fuck him flat friday"? No.

And on the absolute off chance this person does have a Tumblr, and does follow you, well they probably have all the same problems you do that's led them to be active on this site in 2023 so you should be pretty safe in a very girl what are YOU doing at the devil's sacrament kind of way.

Seeing people shoot raptors in other countries is fucking wild to me because we have a whole system of super strict laws governing how you can handle an individual FEATHER off of an eagle, and it doesn't have to even be a dead eagle. One can molt and you can find it on the ground and if you're caught with it the warden will fuck your entire life. What do you mean people are out there shooting them to protect a fucking pheasant. My good friend @prismaticate has asked a very good question here, and while I’m not entirely sure I’m qualified to explain it and would love some input from more qualified sources, my SUPER simplified understanding of why the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 and its numerous modern revisions and addendums have clauses about this included is this:

-It’s basically impossible to tell a feather that’s been picked up off the ground from one that’s been taken from a poached bird

-This used to be a MAJOR problem when bird-feather hats and the like were in high demand back in the day, because several bird species on the edge of extinction kept getting poached in spite of the new laws protecting them since people would just say they “found” any feathers from protected species used in the stuff they were selling, and you couldn’t prove otherwise unless you literally caught them in the act of poaching

-This eventually got SO bad that they had to just make it illegal to have the feathers at all, with certain exceptions made for members of different indigenous groups, or authorized organizations that display them as part of efforts to educate the public about the species they belong to

@zooophagous is this a reasonable rundown? Was there anything I missed/any better sources you might recommend to learn more about this? I know it’s probably far more nuanced than that, but this was kind of the explanation I’d always seen floating around. 😅

That's pretty much the gist of it! Eagles and eagle feathers have more laws on top of that because of their sacred uses in certain indigenous practices, how they relate to legal falconry, and because eagles at one time were highly endangered while at the same time being a national symbol. Where a cop or a game warden may shrug and look the other way if you, say, illegally picked up a chickadee feather from your bird feeder, if they see a real eagle feather they will notice and will be VERY interested in where it came from.

Not long ago here someone was arrested and charged for violating these laws because they tried to sell a plains feather bonnet at a pawn shop, claiming they had "found it while exploring an abandoned house."

The clerk suspected it was real eagle, the warden confirmed it was, and because those feathers are so tightly tracked they were able to locate the family of the previous owners who said the item had been stolen some time ago.

If nobody knows you have it, obviously you can get away with it. But if they see it, or God forbid you try to SELL it, the hammer will fall.

Im surprised every time people think it's a crazy sounding law, it is genuinely one of the only things preventing a lot of native birds from extinction or any asshole could kill as many as they want and just say they found them on the ground

Normalization of gay desire and yes, even gay sex, is paramount to gay liberation actually.

One of the above statements is Problematic and the other is slightly annoying. If we disagree on which is which then working together for a better future is going to get really fucking difficult.

I think this is something young people in particular are confused about. My dad has always had a slightly off color sense of humor, he always feels the need to privately ask me “boy turned girl or girl turned boy?” if I mention a friend and stress said friend’s pronouns, and yet when we had repair work done in the house and the worker was listening to a podcast discussing the evils of transgender people and how to cleanse society, he went out of his way to contact the owner of the business to discuss his disappointment with that worker’s conduct and stress the negative effect that could have had if there had been trans kids in our home.

Our allies will never be perfect. They will never use the perfect language or have the perfect politics. But we have to appreciate those allies and meet them where they are, especially if they are willing to learn.

I’ll take some random nascar fan calling me a tranny fag while advocating for my rights over some “progressive” with all the right words trying to take my rights away any day.
