there is a very real tendency of teenagers with anxiety disorders self diagnosing with considerably more stigmatized and impairing mental illnesses (e.g. schizophrenia, DID, personality disorders), but the best response to that isn't to get angry with them for "appropriating" lol. instead you show them coping resources for the problems they're actually having and deemphasize diagnostic categories in general. if an 18 year old is claiming to have alzheimer's, they're probably making an innocent mistake and are in genuine distress. be kind.

Also I think this trend comes, at least in part, from how brushed aside anxiety disorders can be. If your parents and teachers dismiss you with 'oh everyone feels anxious', then inevitably you're going to start thinking that there must be something else going on with you

”You must feel very scared right now; let’s talk about how to help you personally, tailored to your symptoms” will always be more helpful than “stop faking (X) for attention”. If theyre that desperate for attention or an explanation, something is wrong.

And like, at least some of them are probably right. Yeah these disorders are less common than things like anxiety disorders, but they are more common than you think they are. Like, they probably shouldn't self diagnose without doing a reasonable amount of research and talking to a professional if possible, but not every single one of them is wrong, and being wrong about something is not the same thing as lying about having something you don't. Be nice to teenagers they're still learning

if i ever write something set in the united states im just going to do zero research whatsoever and make stuff up to sound cool it’s equality

hi everyone look at my cat his name is coconut

everyone say hi to coconut

If something doesn’t feel right trust your instincts. By accounts that nineteen year old did not want to be there in the first place so if anyone pressures you or guilt trips you or makes you feel that you are obligated to do something you know intuitively will go wrong, walk away.

Just putting this out there to let people know to watch what they post because you can be found and if you think that the government can't do this ...

Well, you better think again!!

Reminder that in 2017 4chan played capture the flag with Shia LaBeouf. Without any kind of a retail store to use for landmarks they got a rough estimate of the flags location from a livestream. They used the position of the sun to narrow it down to a specific time zone, they tracked the flight paths of planes seen flying overhead to further narrow it down. Then someone in the area drove around honking his horn while viewers on the livestream told him if he was getting closer until he found and stole the flag.

literally that 19 year old who only went on the trip to bond with his titanic-obsessed dad is the only one i have sympathy for

biden 2024 - making things work

This is why I honestly feel like Biden was the best possible choice in a shitty situation, even with his age and potential health issues. Because if nothing else, he is NOT REACTIONARY. He is methodical and dedicated. Do I wish he acted a little faster and with more of an eye towards progressive policies? Obviously yes. But given the choices, and given everything else that's happened, Biden has absolutely made the best of a bad situation. Sometimes you don't need a hero, you need a fucking repairman to come and just make it work until it can be fixed. And he's a damn good repairman.

Okay, I’ll give him the W for this one.

so we can’t go tits out because think of the children, and we can’t wear puppyplay leathers because of the lgbt pervert menace, and we can’t dress in bloc because antifa supersoldiers are scary (or even cringe!)

how the hell are we supposed to dress? catch me at the protest in head-to-toe lily pulitzer with a blowout and tasteful understated makeup?!??!!

it’s weird too because if i were the right i’d be glad when an ideological enemy made it easier for me to identify them. if i were an ‘oops! all signifiers!’ ideologue i’d think of blue hair and pronouns as USEFUL! 2013 mra gamergate types almost abutted this idea when they called blue hair ‘aposematism’ (and in so doing inadvertently casting themselves as predators, lol).

the fixation with aesthetic-conferring-ideology has lead to trouble in the past. the highland park shooter was a young soundcloud rapper with dyed hair and tattoos, so it took longer to convince people that he was a rightist. and we all remember how libs treated richard spencer when he put on a suit and took a bath. but people still use the heuristic of appearance. and if you see looks as a useful predictor of ideology, why encourage decency in your enemies?

it’s for a SIMILAR reason i don’t care for banning words or books. i want people to tell me who they are. it makes my life so much easier. i hate having to play along with coy song-and-dances with shibboleths and dogwhistles and all the rest. it only is a problem after a meme or outfit or talking point has breached containment and loses its utility as a specific signifier (at which point you have a duty, conversely, to run it into the ground and tar it by its association with your cringe fail ass)(i won’t rest until burger king makes a meme condemning degeneracy and embracing retvrn).

Yeah you know what, this fucking sucks. The other 4 grown men on board can choke and they got what they deserved. But I feel so awful for this kid.

“if no art makes you feel anything, make your own art and feel something” is too raw of a line to have come from a jenna marbles video of her painting a rainbow/polka dot seahorse saying “it’s seahorse time” on a denim jacket

Why do you people feel profound thought has to come from high places? The gutter looks at the stars too

not only did you prove your point, but you showed an example of it in the same sentence

the irish prime minister gave biden a "shamrock bowl" but as far as i can tell this isnt like... a thing? they have sprigs of clover in their suits? this seems insane

Why can't I trust people who can't relate to characters who are people of colour, or have a different sexuality or are disabled?

When said reader or viewer doesn't.

Because it means you don't see us as people and only as labels.

I'm not saying you have to relate to all of em but if you can't relate to any... I'm concerned.

When the hunger games movies came out, their was so much outrage because Rue was being played by a black actress.

People said she was being blackwashed and it was forced representation.

Rue in the books is described as having "satiny brown skin and thick dark hair."

She is very obviously not white.

But because Katniss mentions that Rue reminded her of Prim, their were many people who would only view her as white.

Because Prim was white.

Their were people who legitimately could not see how Prim and Rue could be compared because they looked different.

When it was their personalities and kindness that makes them similiar to Katniss.

But people couldn't see that connection the second they saw Rue played by a black actress.

There's also the whole Halle Bailey playing Ariel and the outcry of how can I relate to a girl who's half fish if she's black.

It's just baffling.

I’m seeing a lot of discourse about closed practices today. It’s become very clear that a lot of people weren’t told “no, you can’t have that” as a child.

Think of it like someone’s house. Sometimes, the doors are wide open and they want you to come and explore. Sometimes the bottom floor is open to everyone, but the upstairs is locked. Sometimes you can only come in after you do something. Sometimes you’re not allowed in no matter what you do. But at the end of the day, it’s their house and they make the rules.

If the door is open, come on in, but make sure you wipe your feet.

(The house analogy is TOTALLY somewhere on Tumblr already and of course I can’t find it. If anyone knows the original I’d love to give credit where it’s due.)

Some people have "fuck you" money. You know, that amount you have in the bank where you can look at someone, say "fuck you, I quit" or "fuck you, I'm leaving" or anything like that.

This has now taught me that some people have "fuck you" time. and I could not be any happier with this knowledge.

you can't oppression olympics your way out of how your trauma affected you.

"other people had it worse" bitch! I don't care! just from looking at you it's plain and obvious that you've had a time of it! a person can drown in six inches of water, it doesn't matter if someone else is drowning in ten feet! you're both still fucking drowning! show yourself a little bit of compassion before I come over there and do it for you. this is a threat

this especially applies to all the people in the tags saying it applies to everyone else but them. sorry

hey I'm sorry but if you didn't know that Texas, Arizona, Utah, states with spanish names like California, Nevada, Colorado, and New Fucking Mexico were part of Mexico before the US invaded and annexed them, that's a You issue.

Notice how i didn't claim Texas, Arizona and Utah had Spanish names.

A woman whose epilepsy was greatly improved by an experimental brain implant was devastated when, just two years after getting it, she was forced to have it removed due to the company that made it going bankrupt.

Specifically, because she couldn't afford to buy the implant from the company. They basically took her implant back to recoup their losses. This is what happens when you privatize healthcare and health research. The group providing her with this implant should not have been able to go bankrupt in the first place, let alone repossess her implant to pay off their debts.

This is what disabled people mean when we say that cyberpunk horror is just a reality for us. This woman was literally forced to undergo a surgery because she couldn't pay to keep the implant already inside her brain. How long till companies start repossessing pacemakers and transplants?
