firefox just started doing this too so remember kids if you want to stream things like netflix or hulu over discord without the video being blacked out you just have to disable hardware acceleration in your browser settings!

for the people saying this might be too difficult: idk about chrome but in firefox it just goes

> open settings

> search “hardware acceleration” and there should only be one result

> uncheck use recommended performance settings

> uncheck use hardware acceleration

done!

Since I’m looking at the comments and seeing a lot of people asking what hardware acceleration is and getting wildly incorrect answers, here you go. This is what hardware acceleration is. It’s not DRM, and it’s not placing a limit on memory usage (unless you have weird definitions for both “memory” and “placing a limit”).

This is what hardware acceleration is:

“Do you just have a graphic for this on hand at all times?”

Yes. For this precise reason.

hey just to let anyone using firefox know! searching “hardware acceleration” in firefox settings doesnt do anything! you wont get anything whatsoever! you have to scroll down on the main general settings page to “Performance” and uncheck “Use recommended performance settings” to be able to uncheck “Use hardware acceleration when available”! signed someone who was extremely confused when trying to follow OP’s instructions only for there to be no results

I think the fanon that gets my goat is when people write Klavier all calm and understanding like dude no, Klavier is canonically a bitch and absolutely will get swept away by his emotions. Bro lost his keys and went off the rails. A man was murdered that same night and he was like, "this might as well happen because I lost my keys and so the universe is against me."

He also, as soon as Apollo gained the upper hand for the first time, IMMEDIATELY went to throwing insults. ("Herr Forehead!") Our boy has a pride to him and he WILL play a little dirty. YES he is kind to Apollo, YES he lets them investigate with like, no resistance, YES he fights for the truth and only the truth but he is AWFUL TO WORK WITH.

Apollo and Klavier are BOTH HATERS with HEARTS OF GOLD.

Let’s stop celebrating pain. Let’s stop being proud of chronically ill/disabled people when they “push themselves.” Let’s stop acting like listening to your pain and your body and your needs is giving up. Ableists, just stay out of the fucking discussion. We’re not your trophies to put on pedestals when we do what you want or “act normal,” and we’re not your garbage to be spit on when we have bad days.

Dear, sweet, Littlefoot, do you remember the way to the Great Valley?  I guess so. But why do I have to know if you’re going to be with me? I’ll be with you. Even if you can’t see me. What do you mean I can’t see you? I can always see you.

what the actual fuck is this shit. fuck you spotify you capitalist bastards

six skips a day thing sucks but you know what? i can live with it. ads? i mute them when they come on and resume music like nothing happened. its inconvenient sure but i can deal.

now, apparently, you can only access the lyrics of five songs per month if you don't pay for spotify premium. which is still about 11 quid per month which is still fucking ridiculous when all you get out of it is. you dont have to hear ads. you can listen to stuff you wanna hear. the sound is good. you can organise your queue. and now they're paywalling fucking lyrics scrolls literally just because they can.

(and they still don't pay their artists by the way)

it's amazing how much some of y'all are putting up with instead of just pirating media.

Genuine question for people who pirate music: how are you playing locally stored mp3s on your phone? I don't know of any apps that really allow you to do that any more.

iPhones still all have the Music app, which near as I can tell still allows you to play your own local stuff. Android phones will frequently have a music app from their manufacturer which should let you play local stuff. Google has youtube music, which can play local files, but is bad at it.

Google used to have an app called Google Play Music. I still have that on my phone, and if you're comfortable sideloading apps, you can find an APK easily enough. Otherwise, there's a myriad of apps if you search for "MP3 player" or whatever, although I couldn't tell you which of them are any good. Again, if you're comfortable sideloading, you could install F-Droid, which hosts a bunch of open source stuff. You can still find some stinkers, but at least it won't be sketchy, y'know?

tl;dr: you probably have an app that does this on your phone already.

I do not actually usually listen to music on my phone but like... the answer is the same as the computer. VLC.

On a related note, USB on the go is a thing, see if your phone supports it, because the reason I use VLC specifically isn't for pirated music, it also does video with settings for things like subtitle tracks.

So Fox News ran a story about how they think libraries are turning into drug-infested sex dens and I am shocked, shocked that I was never offered any drugs during my 15+ years working in libraries.

Where do they think the sex is happening?? Every single aisle is lit in that horrible LED lighting. The teens don't even make out here anymore.

As a state certified librarian I can assure you that you just have to go into your local library and ask if they're participating in the new Fox News Hysteria program smh. If they're not, you'll just have to renew your library card and use the fun and valuable resources they're offering right now, such as wifi hotspots, museum passes, dvd lending, mid level adult erotica, ebook lending, and printing! 😔

Jokes aside, here's a nice textbook example piece for any young folks who had not yet seen the "if a society agrees that a Thing is Bad, then people in power have a vested interest in labeling their political opponents as Bad Thing" principle in action.

With the recent run of censorship laws in red states, public libraries have proven a consistent stumbling block. They are not going along with the right-wing agenda of collective memory wipe and public gag order on topics of queerness and racial tension. Public libraries are becoming, increasingly, politically inconvenient for this faction.

And so, it turns out that public libraries are Full Of Sex And Drugs. Just absolute Dens of Sin and Iniquity. Shocking! Who would have thought?

It's much more than that. See, libraries, thanks to various cuts, are one of the very, very few places that serves the whole public and one of the last real havens for the homeless. Because of that, there is a lot of drug use, sex, and violence at libraries, which only went up after COVID hit. Because of gutted public programs, all of a city's problems trickle down to the library. They have nowhere else to go.

The solution, and the one that librarians are specifically asking for, is more funding for public programs to take that weight off them. They want to keep being a haven and serving the public, but they were never prepared or trained for all of this and it's taking a major toll on them.

The solution that Fox is pushing is to either restrict the library so homeless people/other undesirables have nowhere to go period, or to shut the library down altogether.
