my father said to me once that one of the things he deeply regretted was not putting music on for his father while he was fading away. he told me that grandpa would just sit in his old armchair in the quiet, and not until after he’d passed did my dad think of how he could have played of his favorite classical music tapes for him so grandpa could listen to something while he still could. i was very young when this happened and not much older when my dad told me this, but it always stuck with me as something important.

my mother died at home in a hospice cot, slowly shutting down over the course of about a week. when she had stopped responding, i remembered what dad told me about wishing he’d played music for grandpa, and i put the radio on her favorite country music station and kept it on for her until she died.

daddy died in hospital. no cassette players, no decent radios. the day after he was brought in, i thought again of what he told me, and i bought a little portable bluetooth speaker. even though he never woke up, was never aware, i played music for him too.

there’s no real significance to sharing this, not really. my motivation is selfish, again: i just want to hope that someone might think of this when their loved one is stuck in silence somehow, and maybe they’ll play music for them, and they won’t have to regret not doing so. i want to hope it helps someone. and i want to hope that someone will remember my dad with me, even in just a “story i read on the internet” way.

Hey, OP, you actually might have done a very significant thing for your parents indeed. Hearing is the last sense to go when someone is passing away. It’s why palliative care doctors tell patients’ relatives to continue speaking even if the patient stops responding. So even if your mother and father could not wake or respond to you or those around you, they perhaps could have heard the music they so loved, and perhaps were comforted. So what you did wasn’t selfish at all, and I’m sorry for jumping on to your post, but it’s likely that playing music for your parents as they passed away did much more for them than you might have known at the time.

Also please install firefox please, i’m begging you. The reason all of your school sites and work sites and whatever can insist on only working in chrome browsers is because there’s no diversity in the browser market and you should be using firefox because it is GOOD and on almost every computer it’s going to be as fast or faster than chrome (nearly TEN YEARS AGO there was an issue with firefox being somewhat slower but that isn’t the case anymore) and the extensions are wonderful and it now has native tracker blocking and you can import all your bookmarks and

!!!!!!! There is an extension called Auto Tab Discard that sleeps tabs you haven’t looked at in a set amount of time to save your computer’s resources!!!!!

And also firefox is free and open source and it is not a giant advertising engine, like, i posted the other day about the sponsored sites thing but you can turn that off with two clicks, how much fucking effort does it take to get chrome to stop pushing fucking google products at you fuck chrome FIREFOX IS SO FUCKING GOOD PLEASE USE IT AND HELP TO BREAK GOOGLE’S NEAR MONOPOLY ON THE BROWSER MARKET

Also you can install firefox mobile on your phone and put ublock origin on it and you can block browser ads in your phone like I have no idea why everyone isn’t already doing that I haven’t seen a browser ad in fucking YEARS (you can watch youtube in your browser ad free. Why are you still looking at ads? I’m so confused)

In Conclusion Please Use Firefox.

1 - to all of the people sharing desktop computers with parents and spouses and siblings I feel you. HOWEVER! Just because your mom is using chrome doesn’t mean you have to! Your computer is almost certainly capable of running two browsers at once and if that’s slowing it down you can set firefox so that it automatically reloads all your windows and tabs after you close it

2 - Seriously just run multiple browsers if you need chrome for school or whatever then use chrome for school only and don’t give google a second more of your day than you can absolutely help.

3 - I forgot to mention how amazing multi account containers are. Basically firefox lets you create account containers like “work” and “shopping” and “personal” so I’ve got my work’s amazon account open in one tab so that the behavior and cookies from that account don’t follow me all over the internet. I’ve got three different tumblr accounts logged in right now. Read all my free articles for [insert publication i’m certainly not going to pay for *cough* the atlantic *cough*] this month? Open in new container tab. Going on Facebook (disgusting) only in facebook container.

Also here are the basic extensions I use:

Google products still (largely) work in Firefox, just FYI.

There’s some stuff that’s a little wonky, like copy-pasting in Sheets and some tagging stuff in the youtube creator studio, but moving to Firefox doesn’t mean that you have to switch over your email address or never use google docs again. (if you WANT to you can use cryptpad instead of google docs but google docs will work).

You just. Log in.

Google does make it so that there’s some fuckery with using their products on other browsers, but it doesn’t completely eliminate them or eradicate their functionality (except in very specific circumstances, like if you’re using google sheets constantly and need to copy/paste in it all the time for some reason).

Don’t get me wrong, I do advocate removing google from as much of your life as possible but I’ve still got three gmail addresses.

Your blog was hacked: what to do?

If you see weird pics of ladies with dubious links posted on your blog out of the blue, here’s a step by step way of stopping this and preventing it from happening again that I think might work.

Important : this only works if you can still access your blog!

Changing your password is important, but it won’t do you any good if your hacker still has an opened session on your blog and can still access it. So the first thing you wanna do is close your hacker’s session.

For that you need to go in your blog’s settings:

On the new page opened, scroll all the way down. There, you can see something called “Active Sessions“. The first and oldest one (”current session” in green) should be yours, the new one should be the hacker’s session. To close your hacker’s session, click the gray X next to it.

Now that their session is closed, they can’t access your blog anymore unless they enter the password again.

So don’t lose time, go all the way back up and change your password immediately. Make also sure your hacker didn’t change your email address.

Now you should be safe from your hacker. But it won’t prevent you from getting hacked again.

If you really want to be safe from hackers, you should turn on the “Two-factor authentification” option (on the same page).

It requires you to enter your phone number, which is a bummer. But if it’s turned on, everytime you wanna log on (so not if your session is already opened, but only if you log off and try to log on again), it will send a code on your phone that you’ll have to enter (in addition to having a password).

That way if someone tries to hack you again, even if they get your password right, they won’t be able to enter your blog without having that code.

There it is. I hope it will help some of you, since I see more and more people noticing blogs being hacked

with light about the massive wave of bot-hacking i’m seeing, please do this and keep your blog and all of your personal information secure!
