I become exhausted when post-consumer/reuse ideas become trendy because I'll see someone on the community page asking where they can get 20 1-gallon milk jugs for their indoor gardening projects and the answer is obviously the waste bin, after drinking 20 gallons of milk. But they dont mean that, they mean where can they buy them new and already clean. But the point of using gallon jugs is to make clever use of things you already have, not to buy more.

Ok, but it is a shame that artisanal balls are basically off the market now. Like, you have to ride the monorail and hike through a half dozen routes just to find someone willing to sell you a Fast Ball. Believe me, when your boss at the power plant needs five Electrodes by Tuesday you are not going to want to make the trip to Alola; you’re going to head on down to the Mart and get some Ultra Balls, which will do the trick but aren’t well tailored to the job.

I’m with you that modern catching techniques are better, not to mention more humane, but there genuinely is a loss from more niche balls becoming harder to find. Maybe someday the long slowpoketail of consumer demand will be met, but I wouldn’t hold my breath for that Shellder.

look y’all are missing the point. mass production of silph balls crowding out traditional apricorn craftsmanship is, if anything, more a side effect of the real problem: that capture artifacts are too easy to get your hands on these days. $2 basic balls are a problem. before modern ball tech you had to go to an artisan, yes, but part of their job was to care about who had the power to recruit pokémon from the wild, as a backstop against another Knight of Veilstone coming along. there was a time when you’d never lay a hand on a ball yourself until it was clear you respected pokémon, whether tame or in the wild. but now, a “pokémon journey” is open to practically every teenager, even if they’ve got not interest in treating their team with trust and love.

the worldwide rise in the last century of organized crime and apocalyptic cults who use pokémon as their muscle is a direct result of capture artifacts becoming a mass produced market commodity rather than a mechanism for preserving the sacred trust between humans and the wilderness. it’s a miracle that the powder keg hasn’t already gone off by now.

Oh that is rank historical revisionism - what, do you think artisans’ definitions of “respect” were constructed in a vacuum? We already had rhetoric as far back as the warring states period in Ransei about how only the soldierly classes, overwhelmingly descendants of nobility and taught from birth, had the intangible qualities necessary to “bond” with Pokémon. That notion was, and remains, a tool to limit general access to Pokémon in the interest of maintaining class disparities. Their attempt to manipulate natural resources and establish a power base in Alola, while they were modernizing and taking their place on the world stage, was founded on this exact rhetoric of “rescuing” Pokémon from local disenfranchised populations, as if taking Pokémon away from places like Po Town would improve things instead of increasing competition between trainers and decreasing safety.

Artisanal balls and anyone who supports them are tools of the aristocracy to suppress the common folk. In the days when a ball could only be made by hand by an expert, only the wealthiest could afford pokemon, and as a result anyone not born into the “elites” was forced to be subservient to their “betters” for protection.

The release of the $2 pokeball meant that the balance of power shifted to the common citizens. If any child can wield the power of a god, the military and the government and the wealthiest businessmen have no power over them.

More than that, instead of power being determined by the wealth to acquire pokemon, power comes exclusively from the dedication, effort, and empathy required to train them to high levels and to maintain their loyalty. If a person simply buys their pokemon, then those pokemon will either stay at low levels forever, or refuse to obey the human because there is no respect between them; the most powerful people in the world are those who caught a critter at level 2-5 and then devoted their life to raising it into a world power.

And as a beautiful side benefit of this, standard of living has increased across the board. Since every household has at least one minor pokemon in the family and there are increasing numbers of professional, working pokemon joining cities and other civilized areas and working to improve them, every aspect of economy and industry has been enhanced by their supernatural capabilities. Electricity is generated cleanly and in abundance for everybody. Pollution is cleaned up almost completely and instantly. The production of farms, mines, and workshops is multiplied, even as safety standards improve. Yes, every few years another potential apocalypse comes about and needs to be prevented by a couple of brave teenagers, but outside of those incidents the world is damn close to utopia.

A long time ago there was this thing called redlining. White people didn't want Black people living in their neighborhood. So Black people were forced to live in the poorest areas with the lowest wages.

Yes, they banned redlining. But stopping something does not necessarily fix the damage that was done. It did not magically give Black folks higher wages so they could move into better areas. They were basically stuck. They were unable to build up generational wealth. So their children were also stuck in those poor areas with low wages.

Redlining created a cycle of poverty that still exists to this day.

Public schools are funded mostly by property taxes. If you live in an area with expensive property, there will be more money to fund local schools. If you live in an area with less expensive property, your local schools will not have the ability to properly fund themselves.

Poorer areas have more crime. They pay their teachers less. So they have a huge issue recruiting qualified teachers. They cannot provide students with all of the tools they need to succeed. No computers or current textbooks. Schools in warm areas will not have air conditioning. Some in cold areas will have inadequate or broken heating. The building infrastructure may be falling apart with leaky pipes and dysfunctional bathrooms.

Distraction after distraction makes it a difficult environment to learn.

Kids in poor areas are also more likely to be food insecure due to food deserts and sometimes they lack free school lunch programs. Hungry kids do much worse in school. It is hard to concentrate when you are hungry.

So in order for a Black student to succeed in an underfunded school they have to overcome the following variables... hunger, less qualified teachers, lack of school supplies, deteriorating facilities, outdated textbooks, lack of educational technologies, and they are poorly educated about sex and drugs. Many can easily fall victim to addiction and the consequences of sexual activity. They are also overpoliced and overdisciplined. Often getting suspensions and expulsions for the same behaviors as white students who only get warnings or detention. They get suspended 4 times as much.

Under those circumstances, even the brightest and most hardworking kids might struggle to reach their potential. Their grades will suffer. Their test scores will be lower.

On paper, they don't look like a good candidate for admission.

Affirmative action was a way to give those kids with potential a second chance at a good school. Recruiters could judge the students on other variables. They could take into account all of the educational obstacles. And they could admit people who probably would have thrived if they were born in a different zip code.

If someone goes to a good school and has good grades and test scores, they will find a place to get a higher education. Maybe not their first choice. Maybe not a fancy Ivy League school. But they will get a good college education *somewhere*.

If someone went to a bad school and had no chance at achievement... without affirmative action they might not get into any college at all.

If Republicans want to level the playing field, perhaps start with public school funding. (And stop voting against lunch programs for chrissake.)

Until that happens, ending affirmative action will make the cycle of poverty that much harder to break.

Affirmative action codified treating people differently due to race. That is explicitly against the principle of equal access and nondiscrimination. Making AA illegal does not change that it’s still legal to consider that people do indeed come from different backgrounds and have different challenges in life. The only thing that is now illegal is that you can’t say between two otherwise identical people you have to choose the “minority” one, otherwise you’re a bigot. That is blatant discrimination, no different than white supremacy. It’s cancel culture and wokism gone extremist, fundamentalist: “pick me or you’re losing your job because I’m more specialer than everyone else because I’m gay”. Absolutely insane.

No one should get treated differently because of who they are. Doing nasty things in the name of “correcting past wrongs” isn’t moral and is the opposite of equality, you even say so yourself--it’s the school funding and administration that has to change. That’s where all this starts. Shoehorning in post facto fixes doesn't help anyone and makes the situation worse, because the problem causing it still exists. All AA does is create resentment, because people really are being passed over unfairly. Which....isn’t fair.

Not to mention that race isn’t more specialer than any other demographic, which again is extremism. Why not have AA for disabilities and medical conditions? Why not AA for refugee status? Why not AA for nationality, where literally anyone who’s poor or from a third world automatically gets granted enrollment and job offers based on who they are? It shouldn’t matter that they’re worse candidates on paper, they just didn’t get opportunities. Why not for marriage status and religion? Why not for number of children? Why not for political beliefs and sexuality? Where’s all the invasive questions about how you like to have sex and how often? Why is it always and only just race in these discussions? What about all the poor white kids who get treated to a lot of the same bullshit and lack of opportunity, who aren't getting the benefit of any AA at all because "they're white so therefore it's all their own fault if they don't succeed"? Why is it always that people throw a fit about how unfair racial status is when there’s tons of other stuff out there that also gets treated like shit? Most obviously class and income?

Because playing More Oppressed Than You is a fool’s game. It’s just reskinned bigotry. It helps no one. All it does is reinstitute the same totem pole supremacy system where no one matters because there’s always someone else who’s worse off, so therefore anyone who speaks up to protest being mistreated is an oppressive privileged bigot. Everyone should have the same rights, that’s the definition of a system based on freedom from discrimination. Fix school funding. Give kids full medical access paid for by the state.

But until we start to unravel systemic racism, I'm not sure what other mechanism we have to lift Black folks out of their poverty trap.

Without AA, even if a Black student has the grades and the test scores, they are still likely to face systemic racism for college admission. Sometimes seeing a form with a Black sounding name is enough.

Then if they graduate college, they face systemic racism when looking for a job.

If they get the job, they face systemic racism trying to get promoted.

They face systemic racism trying to get an apartment.

They face systemic racism trying to get a mortgage.

They face systemic racism getting a home appraisal.

They face systemic racism trying to get healthcare.

In front of every single avenue of success, Black folks must face an obstacle.

Every single thing progressives try to do to create equity, conservatives vote against. Starting with how we fund schools. No free lunch programs. No teacher pay increases. They vote against reparations. They vote against universal basic income. They vote against free healthcare. They force means testing for welfare programs. They killed the child tax credit. Colorado had a revolutionary free contraceptive program that reduced teen pregnancy significantly, especially among Black teens, and Republicans killed it despite saving the state tons of money. They said they just couldn't continue a program that encouraged young people to have sex.

Hell, they voted against fucking voting.

And those programs would have lifted *everyone* up. We are actually trying to create solutions to help all that struggle. Aside from reparations, none of those programs are designed for just Black folks.

But sometimes a bad solution is all we have. And that sucks. Michelle Obama even admitted affirmative action was imperfect and causes stigma problems for Black college students.

But she points out the rub in all of this.

As did AOC...

And instead of engaging with her point, conservatives invoked "AOC is stupid" because it went outside the technical bounds of the case being heard.

But she was correct, there were two systems of affirmative action. And the only one they considered dismantling was the one that would harm Black students.

None of this is fair.

But we royally fucked a huge group of people and we just keep fucking them. Our government has had chance after chance to undo the systems that are fucking them and has done almost nothing. And honestly, it looks like our government will continue to do nothing. They pulled out this rug without any other solution to address the problem.

Replacing a bad solution with no solution is not progress.

Affirmative action is the price we pay for the sins of the past we have yet to correct. We had this one imperfect tool to help Black students. And now there is nothing. Those few we could have helped will just be thrown back into the cycle of poverty with no means of escape.

Yes, there are other groups that struggle. Other groups that also need help. And it sucks that we have to traige like this. But we have to start somewhere. If we can't help everyone, we have to choose *someone* that we can help.

You know what? I’m tired of this. I do not know what exactly they are waiting for. I mean our government comes up with “reasons” to invade other countries, such as Syria, like their government is allegedly violating human rights or something like that. but… I mean for other countries, they do not even have to go deep to bomb the fuck out of this place, they can just look at our media. And this has been happening to people of color since the media has existed.

Did a research project on this in undergrad and the results are extremely alarming because it’s not just in imagery, it’s in language used even in the law making process and within our own communities in a completely different way than expected.
