Help a librarian help autistic students
Tumblr! I need your help....
I work in a vocational high school library in New England and I have had an autistic student interning with me. I recently taught him how to use the catalog to find books by title/author/subject and he asked me today if he could use his new skill to put together a display in the window for autism awareness/acceptance month in April. I enthusiastically agreed, but our school library has only a handful of books that feature autistic characters and no memoirs/biographies of autistic people.
Vocational schools are great for students who thrive better in non-traditional school environments and my school in particular features a program for neurodivergent students and students with disabilities to learn life and job skills in addition to trade skills to the best of their abilities, so we have a number of students who would benefit from access to books about people like them.
I want to buy a few used books to donate to the library before April. These books will ideally be for a young adult audience of various reading levels and can be fiction or non-fiction. Books that would appeal to a working class audience would be a plus. What books should I be considering?
If you want to donate a few dollars to help me acquire more books by and/or about autistic people, you can donate to my paypal.
Thank you so much!
