from his backyard in illinois, long time amateur* astronomer eric coles uses five different filters on his five telescopes to photograph these distant cosmic gas and dust clouds. with a fifteen minute exposure, eric is able to capture the light that these nebulas reemit from nearby stars.

notes eric, “one picture can be the culmination of three nights or up to twenty hours work,” as multiple photographs, each capturing a particular wavelength of light that corresponds to a particular gas (oxygen gives us blue, hydrogen green, sulphur red), are needed.

(*the word amateur, it should be noted, derives from the latin, amator, meaning “to love”. think amoureux or amante if you speak french or spanish.)
