I’m currently in an 80-person musical where the vast majority of the cast are children so last night we had an “invited dress” before opening night where the kids brought their favorite toys to sit and be our first “audience.”

I will see if I can source a good photo from the cast. An entire auditorium populated with squishmallows and SpongeBob and Bluey and one adult’s Supernatural dolls in the front row.

I am actually begging some people to just let some spaces exist untouched by real-world issues and horrors.

Like I've lost count of the amount of times peaceful game or fandom servers have been ruined by people stampeding in with political rants, bitching about world issues, demanding internal activism, demanding vent channels so they can whine about their shitty parents, ect.

Like. Respectfully. Not every single space has to be inclusive of and welcoming of outside topics. The real world sucks. We don't needed to be reminded of that absolutely everywhere.

Psychologists have talked about this extensively. In order to repair the damage caused by the stressors of life, your brain needs to have down time in which it is not being stressed. It needs to be able to turn off sometimes and turn down during others. That's how your brain processes stress enough to regulate cortisol production and let you get through whatever it is without being on-edge the entire time, all of the time.

At some point we will, as a society, have to unlearn this idea that if you're ever caught not thinking about something serious, you must not give a shit about others. Your mind is not designed to constantly be stressed.

Your body also isn't, btw - prolonged stress without breaks is linked to all kinds of cardiac problems.

Not only will it not kill you to let the Pokemon Unite server or Naruto/Sasuke server just be about Pokemon Unite or NaruSasu, it would actually benefit you to do so.

If you won't let a place be peaceful for someone else's sake, at least do it for your own.

My "hot take" of the day is that "Don't you dare look away!" is the younger generation's version of "Finish your dinner, children are starving in (poor third-world country)."

I understand the sentiment, there are atrocities happening across the world, and it is horrible, and we all want to DO something about it. I don't think you are wrong to feel that way or to try to help however you can. But feeding yourself a constant diet of graphic images and descriptions of these atrocities and writhing around in agonized guilt and sadness and anger doesn't actually help the people who are suffering, any more than kids stuffing themselves to clean their plates puts food in the mouths of people who are starving. If you want to help then by all means find a some concrete way to do, but also step back. Making yourself miserable 24/7 because of the bad things happening in the world will not help anyone.

I felt differently about this at one point, then started having climate/world events-related panic attacks and realized that the constant barrage of doomsaying and hopelessness was actually TREMENDOUSLY harmful to me psychologically. I realized I could be informed but not overwhelmed, that I could care and act according to that caring without constantly being reminded of every bad thing happening in every corner of the globe. Filtering what I see and engage with has not made things worse for the world, it only means I have somewhat fewer panic attacks now.

Hey, let's talk about anons like this, because I know some people haven't been in a position to see the patterns these play out in on broader scale and may indeed not spot the trap.

And it is a trap.

An ask like this has several purposes.

First, it uses social justice language in passive aggressive and manipulative ways to try to coerce a behavior. In this case, the desired behavior is usually for the recipent to participate in community shunning and/or harrassment. The language above is intended to put the recipient on the defensive where, in the haste to disassociate themself from the Bad Thing, they quickly disassociate themself from the bad person, often with no particular fact checking or evidence.

The message is also intended to create a sense of being surveilled and judged by an unknown amount of people with unknown amount of social power and an unknown amount of relevance to your life.

Notice that these asks are usually framed as if they are coming from a follower or potential follower, someone who is addressing you personally and who cares about your opinion and who your blog has an effect on. However this is usually.... very much not the case. If you've ever had the misfortune to watch a gossip campaign from like this from the outside, you will very quickly notice that messages like this get sent in mass batches to dozens and dozens of strangers. (You can often turn these up with a tumblr search, if you look.)

The sender does not know you and probably does not follow you. They have a person they don't like (possibly for their stated reason and possibly not), and they are going through the reblogs of a post from that blog and mass messaging *everyone* with a form letter. They will not see your response and they will probably never even see your blog again.

Which brings us to the second goal of whisper campaigns like this:

Notice that I blacked out the names above? That's because when the recipient answers anonymous asks like this, they provide a platform for the opinion on their blog. An anonymous message like this that gets posted doesn't just spread gossip and apply pressure to the recipient, it is spread to the recipient's entire community.

The *goal* is to get access to your community. The *goal* is to use you as a soapbox.

Is the information accurate? Did anyone check? Does the anon have an ulterior social motive? BIG SHRUG

If you go into the comments on one of these whisper campaigns you will see that *most people never bother to check.*

They assume good faith from a follower, they're off balance defending themselves, and they jump straight to conciliation.

It's a really, really effective form of social manipulation, and really really commonly misused.

This is what bullying on social media can look like especially in left-leaning/social justice minded circles. This is how otherwise caring people get roped into participating in harassment campaigns.

my absolute favorite of this, a while back, was this ask which i can't find anymore, but someone sent jumpingjacktrash a note about how they liked his writing and wanted to recommend it to people and so on, but they weren't comfortable with it because of his continued reblogging of posts from the-real-seebs, a known homophobe, and they just felt like if he'd block me and stop reblogging my posts, they would be comfortable recommending his fanfic to people. and since jesse is a gay man, it stands to reason he would be shocked and horrified to find out he was associating with a known homophobe.

ultimately, i think, the thing that decided him on this question, and led to him accepting the possible loss of fame and fandom, was that we'd been married for over twenty years at this point.

sorry to hijack your post, but imo this also applies to colourism dynamics, even if you have a full cast of colour. like i can only confidently speak from the south asian context, but RAMPANT colourism in the community has given rise to and perpetuated these same stereotypes of people with darker skin being more aggressive and sexually promiscuous than the “reserved, civilised” light skins. 

This applies to your wlw and mlm ships as well. If the lighter or white one is always sweeter, nicer, softer, more innocent, or more feminine and the darker or poc one is always meaner, louder, more aggressive, more sexual, or more masculine then you’ve got a problem sweetie and that’s racism.

I don’t know how long I’ve been here. Time seems to pass differently. But the place is cozy and private so I have no complaints. And whenever I’m hungry, I go outside with my bowl and walk down the hill to the shore. Sometimes the lake is made of soup. Sometimes it’s huge pasta noodles the size of barges. Sometimes it’s breakfast cereal. Sometimes it’s dumplings the size of great whales. I dip my little bowl and take a portion and carry it back up to the house.

Today I found a new bowl! In its center is a little hill with a little house. I will carry it down to the shore and fill it up, and whomever lives in that little house can have a tiny portion of my meal. I hope they have a nice bowl to put it in..
