You can cause one song to play in the heads of every human on earth. One song, in its entirety. What song do you choose to inflict?

Avatar

You know, I genuinely tried to come up with a more serious answer but ultimately I don't think the entire world needs to hear whatever song I consider the best song, or even my favorite song.

I think the entire world just needs to enjoy these 4 minutes and 17 seconds of pure delight.

I just watched a video that revealed teenage baseball pitchers are getting elective arm surgery to "get it out of the way" so they have a better chance of getting drafted and having an MLB career.

I don't ever want to hear about the 200 or so 17 year olds getting top surgery every year while sportsball parents are making their kids get arm surgery so they can pitch a little better.

Apparently it is child abuse to help your kid drastically improve their mental health and relieve severe dysphoria but if mommy wants a McMansion from her son's pitching arm, surgery is perfectly fine.

I'd also be grateful if I could never hear a conservative talking head say "perfectly healthy breasts" again.

Like asking if a hippo should be large or wet. Obviously they should be both

I mean, if I have to pick just one then sexy, but why is this a choice?

Every good vampire should make you feel the 'scared and horny' gif in your soul:

Vampires should also be large and wet.

There are already large, wet vampires.

They're called leeches.

Wow. So my daughter in Europe sadly has now had both of their cats hit by cars. They may possibly get another cat or two in the future, and I can’t believe it, they will in all likelihood still have them be outdoor cats, because “their place is too small for cats”. (I’ve seen it personally, it’s not too small for cats, it’s the same size as my apartment, in which I have a cat)

I get the different North American vs European attitudes about indoor / outdoor cats, but surely, surely, if you had two young cats killed by cars, you’d start to consider the merits of keeping cats indoors???

disney animation execs going on-record last year saying that they couldn't do 2d animated movies anymore because of the supposed "limitations" of the medium and then immediately losing to a 2d animated movie on awards season is too perfect

PSA: stuff not being explicitly explained in complete and total detail is not necessarily a plot hole. Sometimes it’s just not important info. That is all.

Got promoted a couple months ago

Got a new group of coworkers

Found a coworker who is a movie nerd as well

Got really excited and started having big movie chats

Found out they’re not really a movie nerd in the same way I am, they just specifically really really really like weird horror movies with a sexual element

No longer excited.

Hahaha so my question is:

Would a practical, actual, useable cookbook, with recipes I wrote and tested myself, inspired by a fantasy setting, and written from the perspective of and with notes added by two characters in the thing, be considered a transformative work and be appropriate to post on AO3? I’ve spent the evening looking at the AO3 terms of service trying to figure this out, and it seems the answer is… yes maaaaybe?

If that’s the case, I just might have something to post to AO3 here in a bit.

Hmmm I think I’m approaching… about half way through my big project to have a digital backup of every dvd I own. I am REALLY concerned about the amount of movies where I’ve had to really dig to find a digital backup of the version I wanted. A director’s cut or an extended edition is definitely nice, but it is not necessarily the definitive version that’s the only version worth watching. Like. At all. The list of movies I’m going to have to rip directly from my own dvd because I can’t find a proper torrent is slowly growing and it’s making me cranky.

predator animal falling in love with prey animal. You really love to see it.

you’re skittish, of course, and yet you still tilt your head. brush everything aside. give me space to clamp my jaws down on your throat. make the sweetest sounds, too. squirm not to get away but get closer. i could tear you apart. i should tear you apart. you should not be offering this so easily. itching for the slice of teeth that are too sharp. something, somehow, that soothes & delights. doesn’t send you running. why aren’t you running? you should not let me take and take and take. but you do. i could bleed you dry. and i want to. i want to feel your pulse get weaker and weaker while i drink my fill. feel you grow cold beneath me. don’t i?

(why don’t i want to?)

honestly advertising is so fukcing wasteful not even just in the convincing you to buy shit you never actually wanted but like

how much electricity is wasted displaying ads that could've gone to keeping houses warm. How much paper is produced just to be turned into pamphlets and ads that will just be thrown away. how much internet bandwith is wasted just on the amount of ads that are on the internet nowadays. How many hours worth of labor went into producing ads that are going directly into my adblocker or my waste bin that could've been time spent doing literally ANYTHING useful?

I think the thing that makes me saddest about this is that... filler / quiet / character / bottle episodes that have nothing to do with plot used to be considered crucial structure in storytelling, particularly in a lot of drama storytelling.

It's been really lost with the rise of grimdark as a genre, and also with the way television has changed over the years. But 'the rise and the fall' or the 'inhale and exhale' within a genre (i.e. between intense and light moments, or emotional and silly moments) was actually fundamental in particular to television storytelling structure, and certainly in a lot of books too. You only need to look at Lord of the Rings to see that even J.R.R. Tolkien understood this inherently. It's good storytelling to know that in most stories, in most genres, even horror and thriller, it's good - powerful actually - to let your characters breathe and have a moment.

Anyway, ThatKodo is 100% on it, it's just that plot driven stories used to have so so so much more of this. Characterisation IS plot and it DRIVES plot. I am a 'character over plot' writer so I want to eat all of ThatKodo's words, I fully agree with them. It's just that for the most part the current divide between plot and character is one we didn't used to have in most genres to the severe degree we do now.
