Louise Catherine Breslau - Contre-jour (1887)

Madeleine Zillhardt (June 10, 1863 in Saint-Quentin, France – April 16, 1950 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France) was a French artist, writer, decorator and painter. Her life and her career are linked to another artist, the German-Swiss painter Louise Catherine Breslau, of whom she was the companion, the muse and the inspirer. They lived together for more than forty years, a life turned towards arts.

In 1884. Zillhardt asked Breslau to make her portrait. They would not leave each other and moved permanently together in 1886. In 1887, Breslau performs 'Contre Jour', one of her masterpieces, representing the couple she formed with Zillhardt in their intimacy. The painting was bought by the Swiss government in 1896, and is today held by the Museum of Fine Arts Bern.

In 1928, Zillhardt bought the concrete barge 'Liège' in Paris in order to make it available to the Salvation Army. With the support of Winnaretta Singer, princesse de Polignac and heiress of the company of sewing machines Singer, the barge was rehabilitated by Le Corbusier in 1929, with his student, Japonese architect Kunio Maekawa. According to the will of Madeleine Zillhardt, the boat took the name Louise-Catherine in tribute to Breslau and became a refuge for the homeless in winter and a summer camp for children, moored in Paris on the banks of the Seine, at the Pont des Arts and at the Pont d'Austerlitz. It’s a shiny rock, what’s not to like?

I fucking adore amethysts. I don’t care what their “meaning” is…magpie brain like pretty purple rock. Adorn self with rocks. Be cute.

Hee hee hoo hoo shiny rock

Honestly I do like knowing the ‘meanings’ of gemstones but I think of them as less a thing they ‘do’ and more like you know. The meanings of flowers. Like, amethyst means peace and calm. Having one isn’t going to magically heal my anxiety sure that’d just be silly but I like that I can give a pretty purple rock to a friend as a way of saying ‘I hope you have a nice chill time today’ just like you would with flower language. Especially since saying the same thing with flower language would use lavender and a lot of people I know are allergic to that so here have a purple rock instead

the only medicinal properties crystals have is “I did not previously own a shiny rock but now I do :)”

Unless it is specifically rock salt. Then you can also add ‘mmm tastey’ to the list.

The wildfires in Maui aren't natural disasters, they are colonial disasters and a direct result of both the fossil fuel industry and the military industrial complex.

Realtors preying on property in Lahaina- while Kānaka Maoli who resided there for generations are now houseless- is a result of greed and disaster capitalism.

Citizen journalists on the ground are reporting on the devastating cost these fires have on their communities and the untold stories in the media about the tourists still actively extracting land and from already limited resources.

Y’all in the American SW and west Mexico better check the national hurricane center and your weather for this weekend and next week.

Hurricane Hilary is about to make landfall and that whole desert area is supposed to get a years worth of rain or more. Death Valley is supposed to get twice the annual rainfall. Severe winds, massive flooding, and landslides are all strong possibilities.

This is gonna get ugly. Please spread the word. This is a majorly anomalous event and people may be unaware of the threat headed their way.

Flash floods are definitely gonna kill people, so here’s your regularly scheduled PSA:

Desert soil does not absorb a significant amount of water. It reaches maximum saturation very very quickly, and all the rest of the water rushes downhill. Even if you can’t tell that the ground is not perfectly flat, the water can. And it will move. Quickly. No, faster than that. Nope, still faster. If you try to cross moving floodwater, you will get swept downstream and probably die.

Do not try to wade in/cross flood water that is any deeper than the thickness of the sole of an average athletic shoe, no I am not kidding, the water will get deeper literally while you’re standing in it.

This goes for cars, too. I’ve seen entire vehicles getting swept downstream in flash floods because the driver thought they could cross the “puddle” and Found Out.

Stay safe, y’all.

Beyond not wading or driving through it - don't go anywhere near flowing floodwater if you can help it. Flooding will destabilize the ground under your feet, and if you don't want to walk through water you really don't want to fall in. This kills. I know people who were observing floodwaters from a raised embankment, when the embankment collapsed due to saturation and erosion. They fell into the rushing water and both died.

I imagine the soil over on the west coast has some different properties than over here, but it bears mention nonetheless: if you are close enough to clearly see rushing floodwater, and you are standing on dirt/turf/sediment, you are likely in some degree of active danger.

Take care of yourselves.

PSA: *Beware* AI-generated fungi guudebooks!!

…Not a phrase I imagined myself typing today. But, via @heyMAKWA on Twitter:

“i'm not going to link any of them here, for a variety of reasons, but please be aware of what is probably the deadliest AI scam i've ever heard of:

“plant and fungi foraging guide books. the authors are invented, their credentials are invented, and their species IDs will kill you”

…So please be careful if you run across anything of this kind.

NOOOOO
