Hello

Since it's watermelon season!

My grandfather used to grow watermelons, among other things, and he told me about most of this, especially the orange spot. Those are the absolute best!

i have been given nothing but shiny elongated watermelons with small webbings and white spots. and they make me wanna kill myself

My grandfather used to tell me the best watermelons are the ones you steal from the back of a truck so I guess we all learned some watermelon knowledge from our grandfathers

🎵 Every Day

Crows are gettin' smarter!

Their stone age

Is during our Downfall

Wish we could be alive

To see their Bronze Age

Caw Caw

Caw Caw Caw Caw

Every day

Crows are really learnin'!

They know how

To trick us dumb humans

Wish we could let them know

They're doing just great

imagine you're in a timeloop and everything goes exactly the same every time, except for a random user that just posts completely differently each loop. sometimes they don't post at all. they never post about the timeloop, though

during one loop you message them to ask if they know what's going on and they immediately block you and go back to posting

I love that amid the stress of being caught in a temporal paradox you are checking tumblr dot com

nothing better to do

You ever think about how crows are acting not unlike how early humans probably did and you're just like. Oh ok

I saw a Thing one time about how the earliest sign of civilization is a healed femur because that shows that we were taking care of each other because if we Didn't a broken leg would mean you Die because you can't. Do things

And I was thinking about this and I remembered also seeing an article about this one mated pair of crows where one of them broke its beak and thus couldn't properly feed itself on its own. So the other one helps

So basically I have connected the two dots ("you didn't connect shit") I've connected them

And also they not only use tools but teach each other how to construct them, so uh

Really makes you think

Realistically I know immortality would kinda suck but I'd love to see where crows are going with this

Fun fact, there is little info on crows (as far as species of interest go) because they're so good at evading human tactics for collection and observation. I had a friend who studied them in grad school. Not only do they describe humans to each other (so crows you've never seen before will avoid you), they also learn the precise distance of net cannons (for trapping and tagging) after 1 encounter and then stand at that distance the entire time (making naive researchers think maybe they can juuuust caych em). So basically you need to befriend them (a common strategy), or find a murder that's never seen you before (researchers wear presidents masks to throw them off, but then they remember and describe the cars). In this case, you have one chance to collect enough in the group to get good data. Whatever crow you catch once, you probably will never catch again, ruling out biosensing devices (like they use with other birds and turtles n junk).

The latest big finding about crows is that they have a grasp of knowledge breadth, meaning they "know what they know" meaning they are conscious (self aware), have subjective experiences and can reflect on their knowledge. (Source) This also implies they have an understanding of the unknown.

Look up Andreas Nieder and Jon Marzluff's work if you want the deep skinny.

this would be *significantly* funnier if it was a living bird, which is a dinosaur that survived

just saying

a feral chicken

the closest thing to an irl velociraptor

as much as I appreciate feral chickens, you're forgetting seriemas, which literally have sickle claws like velociraptor and the same ecological niche as velociraptors. and also are of comparable size

we musn't forget the tiny terror birds

Do you know what the consensus on pit bulls is? Some people say the negative stereotypes surrounding them are unfair, while others insist they’re inherently dangerous dogs that shouldn’t be kept as pets. Both views are biased to some degree, so I don’t know which to believe.

they're just. dogs.

and same as german shepards, same as huskies, same as dalmations, they have specific breed requirements and aren't right for every home! also like all dogs, they have to be trained to be a reliable and safe pet. but with their needs met and good training, they're about the same as any other dog in their size range (with individual exceptions for personal history and trauma of course)

Except pit bulls have the ability to lock their jaws unlike other dog breeds. So even if pit bulls aren't more likely to attack someone, an attack is likely to be much worse than an attack by any other breed.

common misconception! not actually true tho

they just have very strong jaws, but so do many other large breeds

The misinformation about pit bulls is so easily disproven but also bewildering.

They’re literally just a large and strong dog breed. That’s it. That’s all there is to it. They are not inherently more dangerous than any other large breed with a strong guard and/or prey drive.

They’re just dogs.

They aren’t alligators. They aren’t wolves. They aren’t bears or lions or tigers or hyenas or dingoes or boars. They’re just dogs.

And that’s all there is to them.

Friends of ours have a pit. Me, I have a husband eternally ready to play with a dog. “She’s gonna love you,” Friend predicted the first time he met her. But then we walked in, and the pit sniffed me hello, then took one look at him, and ran off. Not even a sniff! My husband was bereft! He is practically a Disney Princess and yet this dog ran away immediately? What was he doing wrong?

Five seconds later she returned with her best toy, dropped it proudly on his foot, and I swear to god she made heart eyes at him. “YOU will play with me! I can tell!”

Any pit is a LOT of dog. But a good pit is a lot of GOOD dog.

you may have heard that thing about how tech people don't trust "smart" devices etc but what you probably havent heard from people who have to code from a living is computers are really dumb. they're dumb machines that have to be told what to do by people to make them work. and the device in your hand on your desk was told what to do by thousands of different people

hey — i'm sorry if this question has been asked before. if it has, u can just link me to ur answer!

if you had to do your coding journey all over again, where would you start? what would you recommend to beginners?

Hiya!!

Yes, I have answered a similar question to this before, which you can view them here:

Personally for me if I would start all over again, I would learn HTML, CSS, and JavaScript then, after researching what area in programming I like (which would be web development and game development), I would learn some JavaScript frameworks like React and Vue. At the same time learning C# and Unity. The key part in what I just said is "after researching what area in programming I like" - find the niche you like and focus on the languages/frameworks/libraries etc you need to know to be very well in it.

Don't waste your time on things you don't need. Example: why would I learn about the data science side of programming? Right now it's not necessary for me to learn that... so I don't.

Don't know what you like and looking into having a job in programming? Look at the job listing's description of the kind of developer you want to be and look at what languages/frameworks/libraries they want you to know to apply. Obviously, you're not going to apply now but it gives you an idea of what the market is asking for.

As I explained in some of the asks I listed above, what I recommend for beginners all depends on what kind of programmer you want to be. But if you're confused and you're an absolute beginner, just try HTML, CSS and JavaScript as starters before having your full course meal, which would be the programming languages you researched that you need before the developer you want to be.

Here is a cool link that I am using currently to help me stay on track with different developer paths you could follow:

  • Roadmap.sh [LINK] - a community effort to create roadmaps, guides and other educational content to help guide the developers in picking up the path and guiding their learnings.

I hope this helps!! Good luck with your studies!
