Episode 63: Zootopia

Zootopia hit theaters this weekend, and the Gameable Podcast is on the case like a determined cartoon bunny. Is this rare funny animal film from Disney any good? Is the titular metropolis a promising RPG setting? And how similar is co-host Katrina to Judy Hopps, on a scale of “totally” to “exactly”? Listen in for all these answers, some surprising system recommendations, and a hot tip on Kris’ very favorite 90’s Croatian rock band.

Cool. I’m going to listen, because spoilers don’t bother me that much, but it’s going to be at least 4 months before I see this film. I want to see it, but I’m not paying theater price for a Disney movie, I’m going to Redbox it.

As Bonus Episode January winds down, we take a look at The Brave Little Toaster, a non-Disney movie with lots of ties to Disney, Pixar, and the course of animated film-making in general. With its motley collection of rowdy protagonists, its picaresque plot, its cast of improv actors, and its wildly vacillating tone, this weird film is a natural for adaptation into a weird RPG campaign.

Hey, great episode!

So, you didn't discuss the sequels, which is fine, you're not missing much. Although it should be stated that this movie actually got 2 sequels! TBLT To the Rescue, in which Rob (The master) is finishing a Masters? degree in Veterinary Medicine (he's writing a thesis), and there are several annoying songs and plot points based around how computers DON'T WORK. Seriously, one of the main plot devices is utter nonsense if you have even a basic understanding of PC networking.

But the main thing I wanted to point out to everyone, In TBLT Goes to Mars (which is exactly as corny as it sounds), the voice of the Viking I probe is none other than Deforest Kelley in his final acting role.

As for points you made in the episode, this movie was one of my favorites growing up. I actually wore out the VHS. When I was younger, I think most of the subtext went over my head. If I remember right, I generally watched the opening in the cabin, then mostly stopped paying attention until it reached B-Movie. I also remember acting out the junkyard scene with my matchbox cars (pretending to crush them, of course). I don't know what that says about me really.

Anyway, looking forward to next week. Keep it up!

Princess fans and xerography haters rejoice! The Little Mermaid ushers us into the Disney Renaissance this week with the kind of splendor, storytelling, and top-notch villainy that makes Disney an RPG inspiration in the first place. Listen in to find out where Ursula stacks up against other Disney villains, how you can apply this film’s tweaks to the princess formula at your table, and which character wins Kris’ coveted PC of the Year award!

Love the show. Actually It's good enough that I broke down and made a tumblr account so I could comment. So I was wondering, Would you be interested in doing an episode on The Brave Little Toaster? I know it's outside of your main area, as it was not made by the main Disney studio, but they did do the distribution. I would be interested in hearing your opinions on this film/series (it's up to you). Thanks, and keep up the great work!
