Living life systematically

@riverofelementals

This blog is run by two DID systems: Reptilielem and the Willamette System. We share lots of cute/funny/interesting posts and talk about our lives as queer disabled systems living in the US. (Background image was drawn by a friend.)

About us:

Reptilielem (we are typically the one posting)

  • Pronouns: star/stars/star/stars/starself or bee/buzz/bees/buzzes/beeself or ss/ser/sers/serps/serpentself (links go to page with use examples)
  • When we post we try (but sometimes forget) to tag it as "Elemy"
  • We also try really hard to tag things with tw's but we aren't perfect and we aren't going to guilt ourself about it so if you think you would be very triggered if we forget to tw something, this is probably not for you
  • bodily in our 20s
  • mixed Japanese
  • Polyfragmented DID (lots of alters as well)
  • Nonspeaking Autism/ADHD [with special interests in reptiles (especially snakes)/birds/bugs, languages (including conlangs), video games (especially horror!), as well as some other things]
  • In a wheelchair full time
  • Queer (trans, pan, ace/demi)
  • Polyamorous but not currently looking to start a new relationship
  • I try to put tw's on things but sometimes I forget/can't (same with tone tags)

Willamette System

  • Pronouns ey/em/eir/eirs/emself
  • Posts seldomly (forgets to tag name all the time XD)
  • Almost 30
  • LOVES video games (the game I've played the most is Minecraft)
  • Enjoys watching movies, hanging out with Elemy, and bugs
  • Alter count in the 60s
  • Is a giant cuddly teddy bear
  • Very queer and polyam but also not currently looking to start a new relationship

I want to talk about something very specific: "No, I didn't just speak. Calm down and grow up."

It's incredibly frustrating when people accuse me of saying something with my mouth, even though all I did was make a noise.

Maybe they told me something suprising, so I open my mouth and make a "awoh-" noise. Their eyes widen, and they jump to conclusions, shouting, "I JUST HEARD YOU SAY 'what'!" or any other phrase they think they heard. They start making a big deal out of it. But here's the thing: I didn't speak. I made a noise, a sound that may have resembled speech to them, but it wasn't. It's frustrating because they assume that every sound I make is an attempt at spoken words, or that I "secretly can speak orally" and that this was me "messing up my act".

I CAN'T SPEAK ORALLY! I did not "mess up" anything!

"I JUST HEARD YOU SAY "what"!! I HEARD YOU SAY "what"!! YOU SPOKE! YOU SPOKE!"

"Hahah, I think I just heard you say something! Beat ya at your own game!"

"RAYMOND-- Did you just SPEAK??"

"YOU SPOKE, I HEARD YOU! Don't worry, I don't care, I won't tell anyone."

These are all actual quotes people have said to me. And one of these people was a grown adult.

It's like a hurricane of misunderstanding and frustration swirling around me. Suddenly, people start demanding explanations, throwing questions, and even chastising me for speaking when I never actually did. And no matter how much I try to explain that it was just a noise, not a coherent utterance, nobody believes me. It's very upsetting when nobody believes me, no matter how hard I try to explain the situation. The weight of their skepticism feels crushing.

DISABLED PEOPLE ARE NOT PRETENDING TO BE DISABLED. I genuinely can't use oral speech. I am genuinely nonspeaking. I want to make it clear that my inability to speak orally is not a choice or an act. It is a reality that I navigate every day.

This. Very much this. Is extra frustrate when not can get word together explain that not actual speak!

Lot pix doctor like assume because can make noise can speak just not want to. Try make pix speak but since not can just end frustration.

Am have family friend have 6 year old daughter not know much about disability. Pix only one around first time talk her after non speak. Pix not have words explain why "uh huh" , "nuh uh" , "waahh" noises different words. She try say pix can talk and not could tell different. Make feel like fake

It's especially frustrating for nonverbal/nonspeaking people with echolalia. Like no, echolalia isn't speech, I didn't just speak, what you heard wasn't speech 🙄

There's this weird thing I've seen about service dogs where people with like... minor conditions will be like "ohhhhh I wonder if that person's cardiac alert dog will alert to my slightly too fast heart beat!"

And it just kinda rubs me the wrong way. That's someone else's medical equipment. This isn't like trying on your buddy's glasses in 3rd grade and going "woah you're blind hahaha!" Get your own service dog if you want one to alert to you.

Like it's not that your medical condition isn't disabling and everything, it's just that if someone has a cardiac service dog it means they're sick enough that they needed to put a lot of time, money, and effort into training a dog to help keep them safe. That means, at the very least, they've likely been injured or worse from not having one. Service dogs cost more than my specialty electric wheelchair did and they require more work and more skill to handle. You do NOT want to distract the dog, someone might die.

Service dogs are legally defined as medical equipment. Yes, service dogs and handlers are a team, but people treating them like dogs and not as serious medical equipment causes a lot of life and death medical problems for handlers. Changing the way we talk about service dogs for the comfort of other people could kill someone. Is it worth it just to feel better?

( short describe , not full words , but person in picture say not cool to call service dogs " equipment " and want find " better word " , like assistant . )

can both be true that animals not exist just for serve people , and , that some animals do train for specific reasons that people need and depend on .

disabled people who call service animal " equipment " not same people as responsible for factory farm conditions , for example . and like briar say too , word like equipment is how get protection and help that others might deny if can possibly say " well that just pet - do not need accomodate person . " not same situation as say " this just animal - do not need care for . "

also . assistant in specific feel very weird way replace , because medical assistant already human job word ?

in end . not think animals care what word use , long as care for and give what need in return . which is very important part in animals do job in first place . if want stop world see animal as tools , much bigger places to work change than disabled people with service animals .

my biology professor has such a chaotic energy about him, last week i went to his office hours and somehow we ended up on the topic of gay marriage:

he said that when he lived in texas they changed the law to define marriage as “between a man and a woman in a house of religious worship with the intention to have children” so he filed his taxes as single and when they called him up like “you filed married last year” he was like “you changed the law, i was married by a judge in a courthouse and i have no intention of having kids” and they told him “you know who that law was for” and i guess he hung up on them and did not, in fact, pay taxes as a married man that year

Chaotic good

NO! This is Lawful Good! He is following the LAW! Chaotic doesn’t just mean cheeky!

this is like how Sweden stopped classifying homosexuality as an illness because people started a campaign of calling in gay to work

malicious compliance is one of the best tools in the arsenal of civil rights activism

Always reblog for malicious compliance

sometimes following the letter of the law works even better than ignoring it.

In Utah the new book banning laws apply to the bible, and there’s already someone petitioning to get it removed from schools and libraries.

ok.

hi i do not like how some of you people have been using the term ‘egg’ lately. i also hate how you talk to gnc people. thank you.

so ‘egg’ refers to a trans person who has not yet realized they are trans and are in denial. usually one refers to themself in this context. i dont see this happening much to gnc women because its much normaler for a woman to be butch than for a man to be femme. but like.

if you know a man who is more femme. they may very well be a trans woman. and that is for them to figure out on their own. but yall see any man who isnt masc in the slightest bit and go ‘this must be a closeted trans woman’ no. shut up. being a trans woman is more than being a feminine male person. not only do i think youre not normal abt gnc men but i also think you are not normal about trans women.

its incredibly rude to call someone an egg for being gnc. what if we all minded our own business.

WHAT. WHAT THE HELL. the whole point of the trans movement is “only you can know who you are and no one elses perception dictates that” but some of yall went ‘only others can tell you what your gender is but now we’re trans inclusive <3”

on my sideblog i saw someone reblog my post about how we should be nicer to butch trans women a cis woman said in the tags “dont egg me but i want to explore masculinity like this” and like. yeah i think we stopped being normal about respecting trans people and instead “i know your gender based on your vibes” and idk. its a weird and niche phenomena but i think its weird and bad.

also don't do this to nonbinary people who were amab (or any nonbinary person). ik this post is mostly about gnc cis people but this kind of thinking also makes people presume that nonbinary people must be Binary Trans in Training (or Cis But Weird) with the end goal of "well you must REALLY be binary." this happens to all nonbinary people but people who were amab are especially erased

Basically just don't assume you know someone's gender better than they do.

And even if they do come out later don't be a dick about it

So Arizona launched an “education hotline” that allows “concerned parents” to report “””critical race theory””” and other things like ~gender identity~ being taught in the classroom

It would be a shame if the number and email were spread to bad actors looking to prank call the AZ Department of Education

602-771-3500 or empower @ azed .gov 🤡

and for the love of god, don’t just spam it with memes or le funny shrek jokes or whatever, they’ll just hang up

make plausible-sounding reports for things that don’t actually exist, so that they actually have to waste time/resources investigating false leads - the goal is to waste time they would otherwise be using to do their jobs, not to get tumblr clout for being an epic troll

So apparently the internet article said the superintendent wouldn't be deterred by the prank calls because they would 'taper off eventually'. It'd be a real shame if this post stayed in circulation via queues so they get a consistent list of prank calls to filter through. 😇

That would be horrible, hopefully nobody does that by putting a reblog of this post into their queue /sar

And DEFINITELY don't call them and say weird stuff, DEFINITELY /sar

frustrate that some people have idea which AAC devices do not have grammar support , that AAC users " sound stupid " because devices limit .

there is some natural limit in AAC programs and devices , yes , true . but many do have features for grammar support . some people can write with AAC in same way as any verbal person , with only different in punctuation spaces and format .

but . many people , especially use picture AAC , have other language problems too . that is why use pictures in AAC , because pictures help to find , recognise , and use right words . and those language problems more limit than AAC , at least when come to proper grammar .

because , yes , might know verbs have all different tenses , but . if feel very overwhelm to try figure out which one need , which ones fit situations and pronouns . then can not do . so simpler to turn off this verb tense feature , and give AAC user other ways to talk time and actions .

similar , some people might have problem figure out pronoun that need use , because brain not work right with idea of pronoun . just because AAC have pronouns in dictionary not mean that all can figure out how use .
