@riseofmustachio

You know Elon probably saw this and was super mad he still can't fire Halli.

I've already had one person in the notes claim dropping the bombs was the "only option" to end the war.

No.

Shaun has a wonderful breakdown of all the nuances surrounding the Japanese surrender.

If you do not have 2 hours to spare (or you can't watch it at 2x speed), I will give you some bullet points.

  • Several American leaders of the time felt the bombs provided no assistance in ending the war.
  • Japan was already defeated. They wanted to surrender but were stubborn and wanted conditions.
  • Their only concern was their god-like emperor stay in power and not be executed.
  • That was their concern before the bombs. That was their concern after the bombs. Nothing changed in their minds.
  • They didn't actually care that the bombs killed people. It took them several days to even have a meeting after the first bomb dropped.
  • The idea that dropping the bomb would save millions of casualties was invented *after* the bomb was dropped and was pulled out of someone's ass to cover said ass.
  • There was never going to be an invasion.

People think we dropped the bombs and the Japanese leadership was like, "Oh shit! We give up!"

But in reality, we dropped the first bomb and they were like, "I'm busy tomorrow, can we have the bomb meeting on Thursday?"

We dropped the bombs to show the world we had the bombs.

Japan was a convenient and timely excuse to that end.

LAPD detonated 5000 lbs of fireworks in the middle of a residential area, injuring at least 17 people and causing $900 million in various damages in a low-income, majority-POC neighborhood.

They then continue to pursue caging the person whose fireworks they stole while news media misreports to cover for police incompetency and destruction.

It took TWO YEARS to get the names of those involved with this incident. There are people still protesting, still living in hotels, still with unfulfilled claims to the city from this shit

In the town where I grew up, there was a large statue in one of the parks, of a famous historical white colonizer. I'm not going to say who specifically, suffice it to say that it was someone who wasn't worth memorializing for their deeds. And as you can imagine, this statue was a frequent target of vandalism, with paint or toilet paper or eggs on multiple occasions. Now, the local council was generally pretty lax when it came to repairing potholes or other public damage in the town, but every time, 24 hours after this particular statue was hit, the same person would always appear in a Hi-Vis vest, hat, mask and sunglasses, carrying a bucket of water, and wash it clean. They would do it as quickly as possible, but always made sure the face and the name carved at the bottom were generously scrubbed. This only encouraged people to do it again, and so it became a vicious cycle.

Within a year, the statue had sustained so much damage that it was unrecognizable and the lettering unreadable, so eventually the council came and took it down. Also apparently, the person in the Hi-Vis vest didn't even work for the council. They were supposedly just some 'good samaritan' who cleaned it, often before the council even discovered it needed cleaning, so they just let them do it and ignored the problem. They didn't bother putting the statue up again.

Much later, we found out that the anonymous 'samaritan' had been deliberately washing the statue with a bucket of saltwater, which had dramatically corroded it, causing irreversible accumulative damage far worse than spray paint ever would have done. It's even theorized that they were also often the one spray-painting it, just so that they had an excuse to come back after a day to wash it.

A good samaritan indeed

It is 1880s America, you are about to spawn as a Historically Significant White Guy. Choose a class:

TROUBLEMAKING FRONTIER PREACHER

  • Special Power: Good Christian. Your vague adherence to American protestantism will ensure that law enforcement does not bother you whatsoever.
  • Victory condition: Fuck enough of your followers wives to start an inbred theofascist micronation.

MANICALLY AMBITIOUS CON ARTIST

  • Special Power: Basic Literacy. You're poor, but you know how to read. They'll never expect it. You may forge literally any document and it will be believed 100% of the time.
  • Victory Condition: Steal enough money to fuck off to Latin America. A Spanish speaking nation might as well be the moon to your debtors.

EUROPEAN NOBLE FAILSON

  • Special Power: Colonial Wealth. Your funny accent, foppish dress, and noble title, will make any American think you are totally good to buy it on credit.
  • Victory Condition: Become the boytoy to the wife of some borderline-gangster politician and save up enough political capital to run for office and get addicted to opium.

DOOMED FRONTIER EXPLORER

  • Special Power: How The Fuck Are You Alive. Your freakish diet of pork, whiskey, and maple syrup, makes you entirely immune to all physical injury and disease. Somehow.
  • Victory Condition: You have one mission, and one mission only. You need to piss off some completely friendly natives. You need to piss them off so bad they leave your stupid ass to starve in a food forest they've been cultivating for literally thousands of years.

Skip Google for Research

As Google has worked to overtake the internet, its search algorithm has not just gotten worse.  It has been designed to prioritize advertisers and popular pages often times excluding pages and content that better matches your search terms

As a writer in need of information for my stories, I find this unacceptable.  As a proponent of availability of information so the populace can actually educate itself, it is unforgivable.

Below is a concise list of useful research sites compiled by Edward Clark over on Facebook. I was familiar with some, but not all of these.

Google is so powerful that it “hides” other search systems from us. We just don’t know the existence of most of them. Meanwhile, there are still a huge number of excellent searchers in the world who specialize in books, science, other smart information. Keep a list of sites you never heard of.

www.refseek.com - Academic Resource Search. More than a billion sources: encyclopedia, monographies, magazines.

www.worldcat.org - a search for the contents of 20 thousand worldwide libraries. Find out where lies the nearest rare book you need.

https://link.springer.com - access to more than 10 million scientific documents: books, articles, research protocols.

www.bioline.org.br is a library of scientific bioscience journals published in developing countries.

http://repec.org - volunteers from 102 countries have collected almost 4 million publications on economics and related science.

www.science.gov is an American state search engine on 2200+ scientific sites. More than 200 million articles are indexed.

www.pdfdrive.com is the largest website for free download of books in PDF format. Claiming over 225 million names.

www.base-search.net is one of the most powerful researches on academic studies texts. More than 100 million scientific documents, 70% of them are free

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to expanding other people’s knowledge on this topic.  Information literacy is a huge topic in high schools and universities, and one of the things teachers and librarians are struggling to help students understand is the fact that their search engine is not free of bias and may prioritize ads (or what it thinks you want to see based on your shopping experience) rather than actual information.  It’s made more difficult by the fact that the technology in use is constantly evolving.

Also, big thanks to the folks who reminded me to fix the ref links in the original post.  Not sure what I was thinking when I copied it over from FB, but it’s now fixed (can’t vouch for reblogs, this is Tumblr afterall).

Someone accurately noted that the bulk of the above links are databases, not search engines. The initial post called them research sites not search engines.  If you want something better than Google, I would usually suggest using Duck Duck Go.  Someone in the comments said it skews right, but I have not seen research or evidence to back that up, so proceed as you wish.  I would recommend Firefox as a browser, and you could consider one of these search engines.

https://www.qwant.com/ - Search engine with no tracking or advertising

https://www.ecosia.org/ - Search engine that plants trees – has ads and that ad revenue runs the engine while funding tree planting

Additional Sites Recommended in the Comments

Here are some of the top sites recommended in the comments.

don’t do the studio’s marketing work for them

I just checked their archive. They created it Today, July 17th.

prior to the strike they did not have an official tumblr lmaoooo

don’t reblog their shit

i think there should be less cgi and more practical effects because it just doesnt make you wanna lick blood from a body or fuck a monster like practical effects do. removing practical effects is removing the most important part of cinema which is sex

Mangroves are so fucking important

One of the problems with this depiction is that in reality it's never the same guy in picture one and two. The people making the money on deforestation, and other kinds of environmental destruction such as removal of mangroves are not the ones having to pay the immediate consequences. They just move on to the next project, the next area and keep doing the same thing.
