Issues and arguments and disagreements aren’t what makes a relationship unhealthy.
In fact… being able to disagree and argue and come back together and heal and repair is the marker of a healthy relationship. It’s something that will actually build security.
In my experience… there are really two things that make a relationship toxic.
One is unresolved issues. Avoided issues. Issues that have been brought to the table and then stay there, unfixed, unresolved, causing pain on the back burner. Those are the things that breed resentment, and harden hearts. Pain ignored.
The other…. is an inability to repair. Dismissing your partners attempts to reconnect after conflict. Saying they mean less, because it’s just to repair. Repairing is _everything_, and an unwillingness or inability to work towards that after conflict… will kill intimacy and trust.
How two people fight/engage in conflict can have a big part to play in how and if the two above things are handled.
Anxious partners will want to repair immediately, because they are afraid that the rift of conflict will ultimately cause abandonment. Avoidant partners will want space and time to regulate themselves.
Having a plan on how to handle conflict, before you are in the heat of it, is a great way to work on navigating it in a healthy manner.
