The sun heads down thru a stand of Live Oaks over the Cape Fear River 🌊 on a summer evening. Ft. Fisher NC. USA 🇺🇸 has some of the most beautiful examples of the maritime forests left on the east coast. Their beauty and ability to stabilize the barrier islands are priceless. The third entry of Yuta Fuchikami’s On The Street series of Tokyo street portraits is comprised of photographs shot over the past six months in Ueno park. He just keeps getting better- there’s some incredible work in this show. Everything is shot with one of the most basic setups possible, a Pentax 67 with the 105mm lens and Kodak Tmax 400 film. He shoots a full roll of film on each subject. He then later prints his negs in a darkroom on Ilford fiber paper. Tech stuff aside what really makes his pictures what they are is his personality- and his genuine kindness.
Fuchikami’s new 32 page photobook of this work (TCS review here), is published by Stairs Press, and is priced at 2000 yen a copy. The book is available for sale in the gallery or online here.
Red Cedar at Ft. Fisher, NC, USA 🇺🇸.

Vegetation along the lower Cape Fear coastline has always been a part of its beauty, but it has also played a major role in the livelihood and survival of the coastal people. Behind the dunes we find a unique habitat called maritime forest.
Maritime means “near water.” This forest is unlike any other because the trees and shrubs that grow there must be tolerant of the sandy, dry soil plus the wind and salt spray.
Some of the trees and shrubs found in the maritime forest are Live Oak, Wax Myrtle, Sable Palmetto, Sassafras, Loblolly Pine and Red Cedar as shown here.
Wedged together and pruned by the wind and salt, these trees take on a sheered look with roots and limbs slanting away from the ocean. This unusual formation is a protective barrier for the salt-sensitive trees growing behind the maritime forest. #bw #monochrome #mono #blackandwhiteonly #bnw_magazine

I went looking for the “Star of Bethlehem “, or the convergence of Jupiter and Saturn. Luckily I did see them but also a magical sunset. It’s like that in photography, you go with an image in your mind but find something else just as beautiful. That’s the great magic of the art.
The sunset light of the winter ❄️ sun setting behind this tree casts a golden glow across the surface of a mountain 🏔 ridge. A stopped down aperture produces the sunstar and five stops of Singh Ray Galen Rowell ND Grad filters keeps the gradations of light under control.
Look closely and you can see what appears to be a squirrel climbing the trees trunk...... but is really a wooden shape produced by wind and decay. Nature always has such surprises in store for us!!!!

My wife stands in awe of the stunning colors and magnificent rock formations that surround her.
One positive of 2020 was the autumn 🍂 colors, spectacular at higher elevations on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Well worth getting totally soaked!!!!!!

Seventh in my series “The Covered Bridges of Oregon “ on my Instagram page. Oregon has the most covered bridges of any state west of the Mississippi River right behind Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Vermont. Most of them can be reached off of Interstate 5. Here, Pass Creek Bridge is a covered bridge in the city of Drain in Douglas County. It originally carried stagecoaches over Pass Creek before being moved a few hundred feet from its original location in 1987 and reassembled behind the Drain Civic Center. From then through 2014, when the city closed the deteriorating bridge completely, it carried pedestrian traffic. Pass Creek is a tributary of Elk Creek in the Umpqua River basin. Getting very hard to find good E6 process labs. I would greatly appreciate any ideas!! ————————————————————————The lovely cascades of LeConte Creek near the Twin Creeks Trail in early spring. Spring is my favorite time in the Smokies when the forest floor is alive in blooms and the summer crowds are still at bay. Mount Le Conte 6,593’ is one of the highest peaks in the Appalachian Mountains rising 5,301 ft from its base, near Gatlinburg, Tennessee (1,292 ft).
