Lily Burana, A Random Sampling of Butches: Eight Questions Asked of Ten Butch Women, from Dagger: On Butch Women, edited by Lily Burana, Roxxie, and Linnea Due, Cleis Press, 1994

for @cara-oswald !

Bliss is the adorable smile your butch gives you because she’s happy that you’re with her and because of how much she loves you.

Bliss is being held tight by your butch and knowing that you are loved and wanted and safe.

Bliss is holding your butch and stroking her hair as she rests her head on your chest knowing that she is also loved and safe and cared about.

Bliss is stored in the little moments, the closeness and intimacy.

butches arent just a shittier knockoff brand of men. we are butches. we are our own identity. we arent masculine because we're trying to be men, we're masculine because thats who we are. we arent trying to emulate heterosexuality or conform to lesbian stereotypes or whatever the fuck, we are JUST FUCKING BUTCH. leave us in peace for just one fucking second.

I had just read this paragraph when I saw this post ("another mother tongue: gay words, gay worlds" by Judy Grahn). The book is from the early 1980s, and I like how it shows that even if there are overlaps, lesbian masculinity has always been its own thing with its own ideals seperate from that of men
