Barbie moving back or just not feeling it when Ken tries to kiss her on multiple occasions. That right there. That's when I felt so seen.
And throughout the entire movie, I was just dreading the moment where she'll have to step back and realize that she's had feelings for him this whole time ugh and that she'll go back and they'll live happily fucking ever after again ugh
But there was none of that. Just Barbie being her own self without a man, without a romantic relationship.
That right there. That gutted me because that's been me my entire life and I thought that there was something wrong with me for not wanting a boyfriend and romance in the real world, fictionally it's a whole other thing but this right here rung so so true to me because it felt so real and it felt like a healing salve to that ache society caused in me.
I return from BARBIE and I will say that my only true critique is that it is a film much more interested in using Barbie as an allegory for WOMEN as a monolith than it is in exploring femininity and what Barbie means to people who find freedom within that but it's fine
as thoughtful and insightful as I think Gerwig's work can be, I think it very much all comes from a cis heterosexual perspective, femininity is praised and critiqued but also inextricably tied to womanhood, just not in a way thats necessarily revolutionary, womanhood isn't a collection of somewhat arbitrary traits that sometimes come bundled together in a stereotypical package, but something that's always recognizable and familiar and filled with universal experiences
that said, I still think it's a valuable and intelligent look into the struggles of women who do their best to fit the mold they've been given only to realize being a human who's complicated and imperfect makes that task impossible
despite these "issues" I think women of all types and walks of life will find something to connect to in some way, I just don't think it's particularly ready to explore things like Barbie and her connection to homosexual culture, or transness as a broad concept, or the fact that not all women worry about the opinions and expectations of men

currently obsessed w the idea of a role reversal au where link is the hero and the prince and everyone in hyrule is scrambling to find a woman from the branches of the hylian royal family who can seal ganon and meanwhile link walks into the ancient tech lab one day, meets zelda the robot programmer whose family is like 10k years removed from the throne, and goes “this is the goddess incarnate who will save my kingdom.” and mentions it to nobody. because he’s link.
Changed my mind actually Zelda is investigating the shrines which gives Link an excellent reason to follow her around the kingdom making sure she doesn’t die helping awaken them for further study. It also means he goes into the calamity fully jacked which would help if he fights the calamity for 100 years while Zelda takes her holy power nap.
I’m still thinking about this… please imagine that, instead of Link slowly recovering his memories and realizing the princess was in love with him, it’s Zelda slowly recovering her memories and realizing she was in love with the prince. Talk about embarrassing.
Btw once again I’m thinking intensely about role swapped Zelda. Running around Hyrule to get to the WEIRDEST and most impossible locations (because link took the photos) just to get your memories back. Having to watch yourself fall embarrassingly in love with a fairy tale prince secondhand. Learning to incinerate monsters with your holy powers. Praying at the sacred springs and then getting elemental magic you can shoot out of your hands. Trying to get Paya to talk to you like a normal person. Studying all your old notes on ancient technology that Robbie and Purah managed to save. Studying Robbie and Purah’s notes. Stealing Robbie and Purah’s notes when they get mad about it. Visiting the tiny remnants of villages that are all that’s left of a civilization you barely remember. Wondering why all the statues of Hylia have new little statues of this “fierce deity” guy next to them. Arriving at woodland stable and realizing during your first unobstructed view of the castle under a blood moon that it’s because a giant glowing silver version of Prince Link shows up and strikes down calamity Ganon before he escapes into Greater Hyrule. Freaking out when the fierce deity prince looks right at you. Freaking out MORE when the old man at the stable says that for as long as they know of he’s only looked south and now it’s a different place every month, because it means he looks at you EVERY TIME. Have a panic attack over the fact that the prince might be in love with YOU.
