This is a great example of what people are really like. Most people have a random assortment of knowledge specific to them. In many cases I get told I know a lot when in actuality I just know a bunch of random things about things I like.

Anonymous asked:

You mentioned years ago that you once worked on a project restoring former coal mine land, trying to get plants to grow and break up the compacted soil and so on. Do you know how the site is doing now? I hope you don’t mind me asking, but it sounds like a very cool project and I would love to know if it worked!

Oh, extremely well! The trees are about a third of the height they should be for their age, but there's a little woodland there now. This year my uni is taking over the lease for the site, so investigations continue. We got a lot of papers out of it. Plus, we proved that if you get the trees to grow in, you increase other biodiversity, like birds and earthworms and small mammals and lizards (the place is alive with lizards every summer, actually. Sometimes they sit on your bag.)

The main project site is here, if you want a gander.

Progress photos, though! First, for clarity's sake:

That's the layout of the site from this vantage point. This photo is from August 1998, and I've labelled it so you can see the sections more clearly. We planted in the blue and white sections, blue first in the 1990s and then white in the mid-2000s onwards. The orange bit is just to show how there really are just bare heaps in these places, still; BUT, the whole site is made of the stuff, with a grass seed cover.

Anyway, the development:

You would be amazed at the lichens that turn up, too. And the butterflies. And the fungi. One of my students is doing her dissertation up there on mycoremediation, in fact. Fantastic place.

This is incredible work! But also

We have lizards??

...sorry??!?? Yes???? Of course we have lizards????? This has absolutely blindsided me what -

Here is a picture I took a few years back ona different site of a common lizard basking

I went for a walk around where Houghton Main colliery used to be recently, I’m not sure whether Asos (who have a big warehouse on the site) is but was amazed by the variety of birds and insects around. At the same time there’s still lots of ground that is clearly still very marked by the mine.

In 20 years we’re going to find out that “no kink at pride” discourse was a CIA psyop to reintroduce more traditional forms of homophobia (i.e. the defense of the innocence of children, Gays as sexually predative, etc) to millennial and gen z aged influencers.

… Y'all need to get off Tumblr.

I go weeks or months without posting sir. This is offline brain damage.

the us state has a history of injecting poison pill discourses into political movements that threaten its power like this is your brain on actual history.

*discourse calling gay men pedophiles for kink related dressing practices that have been in steep decline at Pride events re-emerges near the same time as QAnon*

“I see nothing suspicious about this.”

the global rise of fascism?  a resurgent right wing in america? the roaring presence of reactionary thought in erstwhile progressive spaces? a connection would be inconceivable… internet brain rot, go outside!

Have you considered not being an idiot and researching things?

It’s not my fault that you can’t recognize a white nationalist homophobic propaganda campaign that’s discussed out in the open and there’s documented evidence for.

Like, cannot make this clearer, this is not online brain rot, this is library brain rot.

Read a book, touch paper, consult a 20 yr old newspaper page or fifty

Hell, even talk to your queer community elders. They’ll tell you this is a reoccurring thing that happens enough that it’s why so many older people can see the red flags first and warn younger folks of this stuff. I saw similar shit in the late 90s, all through out the 00s, and it was really bad flares ups of it throughout the 10s for obvious reasons. And my older queer friends even mention seeing these same strategies happening in the 80s and back.

So yes, read a book, touch paper, AND talk to your queer elders. Learn this shit to know how to stomp out like we’ve had to each time it’s tried coming back. Bait is planted all the time in a effort to ruin us, don’t take it and consider it when we tell you it is.
