friendly reminder that i (like many other latines) do not like being referred to as hispanic bc:
- it groups us with our colonizers (spain)
- completely erases other latines who don’t speak spanish (such as indigenous people, brazilian people, etc) who have way more shared history than we do with our colonizers
- was largely popularized by the american govt in the 1970s as a quick and cheap way to categorize us en masse
