not to be sappy on main BUT one thing that i really loved when studying linguistics was that the more important a word is, the earlier the concept of this thing was given a word. for example, the word water is similar in many similar languages (aqua, agua, água). so, the more important a word is, the more languages it’ll be similar across and the older this word will be, theoretically and generally speaking (many other things also affect this)

AND SO in my years studying linguistics, there was one word that was nearly identical across so many regionally different languages (though there are outliers of course), from europe to most of asia to subsaharan africa to indigenous languages. across nearly all languages this is the first word people learn how to say and maybe the first word humans in general officially named and defined:

  • mamãe - portuguese
  • 妈妈 (māmā) - chinese
  • ਮੰਮੀ (mamī) - punjabi
  • mamah - mayan (yucatec)
  • мама - bulgarian, russian, ukrainian
  • ماں (mäm) - urdu
  • মা (mā) - bengali
  • mẹ (may) - vietnamese
  • ママ (mama) - japanese
  • అమ్మ (am'ma) - telugu
  • mama - quechua
  • મમ્મી (mam'mī) - gujarati
  • അമ്മ (am'ma) - malayalam
  • amá - navajo
  • 엄마 (omma) - korean
  • eme - native hawaiian
  • onam - uzbek
  • aana - yupik
  • mema - tagish
  • μαμά (mamá) - greek
  • mama - swahili
  • أمي (umi) - arabic
  • mayi - chichewa
  • माँ (ma) - hindi
  • mam - dutch
  • ម៉ាក់ (ma) - khmer
  • แม่ (mæ̀) - thai
  • அம்மா (am'mā) - tamil
  • අම්මා (ammā) - sinhala
  • amai - zulu
  • ama - basque
  • आमा (āmā) - nepali
  • အမေ (amay) - myanmar (burmese)
  • mamá - spanish
  • mom/mum- english

this isn’t actually the first word because we teach babies this word (most likely), but because the “mama” or “ama” sounds are the easiest things for babies to say, and it’s nearly always the only thing they can say at first, and adults across all languages defined their language around that.

babies all over the world for thousands and thousands of years all started out blabbering sounds like “mama” and mothers everywhere were all like Oh Shit That’s Me! I’m Mama!

Your body is an incredibly bizarre machine.

“What you see is a myosin protein dragging an endorphin along a filament to the inner part of the brain’s parietal cortex which creates happiness. Happiness. You’re looking at happiness.”

Look at her STRUT!!! She is dragging that endorphin for filth and using that filament as her runway, bitch.

6 inch heels…..she walked in the club like nobody’s business…..godam…..she murdered everybody and i was her witness

A neighbor called and said she saw a swarm on a fire hydrant so I grabbed my bucket and ran there as fast as I could. I dabbed some lemongrass oil on the bottom of it and they walked in. After about 5 minutes I just scooped the rest in and bam! Free bees!

I got the queen on the first scoop too though. Apparently she was a new one because she was piping in there really loudly. This is my first personal swarm catch so honestly I’m not sure if that was supposed to happen or not.

What other website am i going to see posts where the op talks about “bam! Free bees!”

straight friend groups be like: *blonde girl* *brunette boy* *class clown* *brunette girl* *michael*

gay friend groups be like: *the tank* *the magic user* *the healer* *the rogue*

addendum: *the tank* *the magic user* *the healer* *the rogue* *michael*

I submit to you:

Now, I know what you’re thinking. “Who’s who?” It’s easy.

See, Jason? Jason is clearly the rogue. Oh, he’s not great at it. It’s why he’s got that great nickname: The Defendant. But ya boy got moves. He’s always gonna roll with it. You can’t keep him down. He’s a high Dex and Cha build, he just used Wisdom and Intelligence as his dump stats. Deep, deep dump.

Your tank? Eleanor Shellstrop. She’s not your standard bulky warrior, sure. But have you seen her talk to people? She’s the damn queen of aggro, am I right? Look at basically any of her friendships in life. I rest my case.

Tahani? Congratulations, beautiful, you’re the magic user. Look, who else could pull it off with the panache and style necessary to control the arcane strands of the universe in ways we can hardly even understand? No, not Kamilah Al-Jamil. I mean Tahani.

And your healer? Come on. The guy who’s already in anguish over making sure everyone’s going to survive, clearly. Chidi, the only thing he won’t be able to fix is his stomach ache over whatever dumb thing the party has gotten into now.

And, of course. Michael.

That’s no different from how buses already operate (:

hey y’all i just saw hadestown on broadway and let me tell you, it was one of the best experiences of my LIFE. imma share the highlights:

•amber gray, in general

•that one Really Tall ensemble member (Timothy Hughes- show ensemble members love!!)

•the way eva sings “flowers”- it’s so helpless and heartbreaking, she really has so much emotion in her voice

•the entire “wait for me” sequence was probably the most enchanting thing I’ve ever seen on a broadway stage- the lights, the effects, the voices, the words, the orchestration...it gutted me, man

•patrick page, in general, but specifically “I AM THE KING OF ELECTRIC CITY” where the lights shone and blinded us and he really looked like a god among men

•the LIGHTING! absolutely stellar. so creative. they shone on us, used different colors, made it really feel like a train, the underworld, and more

•”road to hell” and the amount of spirit in the actors and the audience, we really felt like a family telling a sad, old song

•in “chant (reprise)” where hades, persephone and orpheus are walking on the revolving stage together and it’s so INTENSE

•honestly all the uses of the revolving stage

•when the stage expands to the full extent of hadestown

•i was taking pictures after stage door ended and all of a sudden reeve and eva come back out and took more pictures with me and the only other person who was still left. Reeve had a little fart prank toy and pressed it when we were taking pictures and it made Eva laugh and it was adorable they’re really the sweetest and just doing that little extra and warmly inviting/letting me take more pictures with them was just the icing on the cake

•I don’t want to brag by saying I’ve been to a lot of broadway shows, but I have, and I understand my privilege in getting that ability. I bring it up because it gives more weight when I say this was honestly probably the best broadway experience I’ve ever had. The world needs shows like hadestown in a lot of ways. I hope it sticks around for years to come. It’s a great one.
